My garage is constantly near 70 degrees, it’s hard for the fig trees to stay dormant. But I finally found a perfect spot under my deck and in between 3 walls. They are still outdoor, but the walls shield them from cold harsh winds, and residual heat radiates from my house can keep them a little warmer than out in the lawn.

And where I live I need some cold to make them even think we have seasons. Florida is Hard to do figs.

A garden utility cart on wheels would make them easier to move into winter storage 😊

Thank you for this video. It was the exact subject I needed. I will move my tree from our basement to our unheated barn. It was already out for a couple frosts. We live in northern Illinois. Extreme cold. I have lost one Chicago fig in the unheated uninsulated garage.

The unheated basement can work, but only if you use it sparingly. Bring them in for a couple of days and/or nights when temps are forecasted below 20F. Then move them back out ASAP. Of course, that is only feasible if you have a few trees. not a fig forest as you do.😄 It also would probably only feasible down to maybe zone 5? Colder zones are going to have long stretches where temps are in the teens during the day and single digits or negative temps at night.

I have noticed lots of people give away spare insulation and other building materials on Facebook marketplace. I got two lots of fiberglass to create an insulated cabin inside my hoop house.

I have a detached garage. If it is supposed to get really cold I put a few buckets of water around my figs for the latent heat. Might not be necessary, but it makes me feel better.

Good video with some good tips. I have a greenhouse with no electricity and had though I'd put them in there. Hopefully, with a tarp like mentioned it will be enough. Zone 7b. I also have some cuttings inside that I probably need to start letting go dormant. Thanks for sharing.

I'm on Eastern Shore of Maryland with weather very similar to yours and have a few questions. I rooted some fig cuttings at the end of summer and also have an air layered fig that was also done late Sumner early fall. So what do I do for winter on those late rooted figs? I have potted some in gallon pots outside but it was late summer. Also have 2 in still plastic McDonald's cups can i repot them and keep them inside for the winter. I know it was prob too late and if lose them no terrible loss but hey I've got to try.

Last year I left my fig tree "Brown Turkey" outside in the pot in zone 7a without any protection. Maybe I was just lucky. One year before I bought this fig tree the temperature went down to 0 °F, that would probably have killed it. I think I'll put it in the shed this year. I also planted another one in the ground a month ago, I hope it survives the winter. Maybe I'll put some leafs around it.

Hi, I don't know how else to contact you, so please excuse me.
I recently bought what I was told was a violette de bordeaux fig tree, but was sent a rouge de bordeaux instead. The seller insists that they are the same but I cannot find a definite answer. Do you know by chance?

I live in zone 6a and only have an unheated basement at my disposal (no garage nor shed) so I'm thinking I might bring my baby fig trees in and out, depending on daily temperatures? I.e. They'll stay outside on any days above 20 degrees F and I'll bring them into the basement temporarily on colder days. I'm not sure how else to protect them. If any of you have a better idea, please advise! Thanks for all of the information, Ross!

Hello, I got 2 small fig trees from etsy and we are in zone 8a Charlotte. I am very new to figs, currently, I keep them inside the house and they are putting some new leaves. After watching your video, do I need to keep them in the garage to plant them in the ground during spring?

Hey Ross, what do I do with the cuttings I've recently rooted that are only about 6 to 10 inches tall. I have rooted a bunch of cuttings the last couple of months? Probably was a bad idea, but I'm trying to get a jump on selling some trees in the spring.

I live in TX (Dallas area), and I don't think we got down to 15 degrees at all last winter. All 3 of my fig trees in ground took damage and had die back.
Could this be because they weren't fully dormant before they got hit with a freeze that lasted more than a few hours? Confused since your container figs seem to handle much cooler temps than my inground trees. Thanks!

The first year I didn't water anything at all in the winter and I think I lost a few trees because of it. Last year I watered everything once or maybe twice for smaller pots and didn't have any issues.

Hi Ross, my problem in 7a is my trees are all in pots, mostly 10 gallons. I store in an attached garage. We have had early spring last few years. Before I can prune them they send out shoots Even as early as late Feb early March. Can I prune before I store them away? After they go dormant? Due to this problem i had to purchase powerful led plant lights. Because it's still way to cold outside. Even left window in garage open with a fan blowing in cold air. If it's in the 50s they will wake up. Can i prune prior to storage?

Any item you can use to hold wheat straw around plants should work. At least 12 inches of straw all around and over tops of bundled branches and tarps to keep water and wind off the plants is my most effective overwinter method. Good luck.
PS. Most of what I know came from ROSS.

Hey Ross, Philadelphia area, is it necessary to allow Fignominal dwarf fig tree to go dormant for the winter?
The plant shop I purchased it from said it does not need to go dormant and can be kept growing indoors during winter which is what I did last year, the first winter owning the plant. It produced about a half dozen figs this season.

    • @kalorakalora
      @kalorakalora 9 місяців тому +1

It'll grow much better and be much more productive the next year if you let it go dormant. If you run the experiment with 2 of the same fig roughly the same size, you'll notice that the dormant one outperforms by a huge margin the next year
