Grateful Dead Rocking the National Anthem

- A stirring rendition of the National Anthem by Jerry Garcia, Bob Weir, and Vince Welnick at Candlestick Park on April 12, 1993. Even in the later years, they could still belt it out. ALSO: A never-before-noticed UFO flyby occurs at 2:11 in this video. Note the object's unusual green hue. (Perhaps certain aliens just wouldn't miss this rendition for the world--literally...!)

"How'd you get the Grateful Dead???"
"We asked them."
As Jerry said, "Like old prostitutes and bad architecture, if you 're around long enough, you gain a certain amount of respectability."
I remember listening to the anouncer before the game saying that after Roseanne messed up the anthem the last thing that we needed was a bunch of drug infested burn outs to sing it . They went on to do one of the best most traditional versions ever
Imagine that.
Is this the tubes or the dead? Kidding
Vince definitely showed off his vocal and musical chops.
They were always great at a cappella
I remembered, when I was younger, hearing that the Dead were going to sing the anthem at Candlestick and I remember feeling weary about it...and I remember watching it and I can still remember getting goosebumps.
It's the best rendition of the Anthem I've EVER heard at a live event. It's sung with such heart and beauty and harmonic bliss.
And this is coming from somebody who is NOT a Dead fan at all.
Beautifully performed, even now, years later. :)
Thanks for the vid! :)
Dusty’s little smile at the end says it all.
I remember I was driving on I80 when The Dead started up the anthem. I had to pull over because I was crying. I'll never forget it.
And that my friends is how you sing the National Anthem.
The harmony on "home of the brave" just breaks my heart because it reminds me so much of "Attics of My Life." When there were no ears to hear / you sang to me
You are spot on........gave me goosebumps.....
Right on! PEACE
Indeed...✌🙏😎
Vince Welnick was a hell of a singer!!
And really as far as keyboardists go he is pretty decent too. He was just coming into his own when his time came to make his exit from the band. Look at how long it's taking JohnBoy to get where he is now with the same fellas who toned it down for two years and also let him have almost a year of self practice. Vince had Bruce sure the first eighty or so shows but the band was right out on the road at full speed. About the same amount of time passed by 94-95 as has passed since John signed on. And John is a better musician than Vince too. Second most underrated Dead keyboardist. Brent Mydland should get way more credit from the elder generations than he does.
He was really beltin' it out there ! PEACE
Vince’s melodic line for this one gave me chills. He gave the national anthem a blues/country vibe that I’d never imagined could be done.
RIP, Jerry. We miss you so much!
I was there - scalped a ticket home opener. Third base line. Plenty of tie dies in the stands.
Look at Coach Dusty Bakers big smile after they finish. It was a great day to not have a job.
one of the top 2 versions ever! they make it sound so easy, and this ain't no easy song to sing!
Just as sweet as I remembered it, watching the replay on the evening news. Brought a tear. RIP Jerry and Vince.
Thanks for gettin this back up. The star spangled banner is one of the most difficult songs to sing. Thats why even usually competent singers mess it up big time. The Grateful Dead, have something more than most, and that is dynamic range. This is one of the most outstanding renditions of the national anthem, it gives me goose bumps. I love the Grateful Dead.
Thanks for posting....one of the best versions I' ve ever heard...RIP, Jerry, Vince, Brent, Keith, and Pigpen
Better than I expected... I mean really, it is hard to make this song sound musical. And the Boys have their vocal ups and downs. But they made me proud of my country and of them.
"A stadium filled with Deadheads." Love That.
...never stop, never stop, never stop now, never stop...
Deadheads have filled dozens of stadiums.
"Patriotic" Deadheads!
@@WinkLinkletter *hundreds
That was one of the most beautiful National Anthem versions I have ever heard. God Bless You..and thanks for sharing. It was so sweet.
very cool arrangement: they all sing lead on the first verse, then Vince takes a high harmony on the 2nd verse while Jerry & Bob double the lead. and 3-part harmony from the bridge. LOVE IT.
Eighteen years ago, when I was trading Dead shows on audiotape through the mail, I received the audio portion of this rendition of the national anthem, as filler. I was struck by its harmony, grace, and lack of pretension -- the antithesis of the unctuousness with which some performers interpret the anthem. I'm so glad to be able to see the video portion.
Imagine. This song is so hard to do that it took the Dead to carry it off! Oh, do I miss you, Jerry!
WOW ! GREAT Hamony...super vocals.
Damn those boys could SING!
they really proved themselves on Workingman's Dead.
Beautiful! Never sounded better, either the anthem nor the Dead. Thanks, guys!
Best thing I have ever heard Vince do.
New found respect..
I aint from the States nor a baseball fan but this gives me goosebumps
best version National Anthem
Miss you Jerry!!!(Still makes me cry every time I watch this)
And who said Vince couldn't sing, he sounded amazing!!
O.K. Now I've seen everything!! When I die bury me deep. A pair of speakers a my feet. A pair of headphones on my head. and let me listen to the Grateful Dead. I mean first our boys are singing the National anthem. Despite years of a counter-culture life style. You scratch the surface and what do you find? Patriots !! And if that isn't enough, right behind the flag fly's a UFO. I told everyone that ET might just land at a Dead show one day. And we would just yawn and ask if they needed a miracle ticket.
Thanks for uploading this gem.
From Vienna.
Peace.
They so nailed the harmonies.
Would also like to point out that I'm almost positive that they all thought way more deeply into these lyrics as they sang them, as compared to mostly all of us (right?) to whom they've become a near meaningless patriotic slur. Think of every time you hear a vocal solo of this song- It's essentially a chance for popstars to flaunt their vocal ability in front of an audience for about 75 seconds before the game begins. It just sounds so much more convincing, so much more true when the Dead are singing it that for a small moment you're actually proud of your country again.
You hit the nail on the head. I'm a huge sports fan (mostly hockey) and watching all the primadonnas get up there and make the song about them - as if it's their "moment" makes me sick. The song isn't about you, ya jackwagon. These boys did the song the ultimate justice. /rant
i couldn't agree more, they let the song sing for itself
Tyler O'Hare - The boys always did covers as well as their own fine music, and so they knew the trick to doing covers, which is to respect them. This is the same trick that actors use to make a sci-fi film or a superhero film, to be respectful(also known as acting as if it was real.) The point is, they were offered the gig, and then did their homework and worked out the harmonies(though I think that this may have been based on an old recording) and then presented it on game day with their usual elan. What a great job! I always feel better after I get to see them perform.
They used to play this in my homeroom in 5th grade, every day....
wow .....that surprised me. got to say that is easily my favorite version. wish they would have added another verse. In the movies you see a general or whatever giving a speech before going to battle, this would have done the job for me. much respect
Never knew they did this. There's the something new for the day.
I am the son of Army lifer who volunteered for Vietnam. I am crying as I listen to the anthem. Joy!
One of the better renditions I've heard in recent years.
I am ashamed to say that I did not expect this to be so awesome. What a great job- harmonies, high notes. Damn, I'm ashamed of myself. Sorry Jerry, Bobby and Vince for expecting any less.
This is now my favorite dead clip ever
amazing how you can just nearly cry at the thoght of this mans death. RIP Garcia! happy 70th!
Such good harmony, had a sound that made me think of their American Beauty recordings.
Wow beautiful singing of our national anthem done by a great band the greatful dead
this is how you sing the national anthem. i get so sick and tired of people trying to over sing it. just sing the song.
I was there! Got a ticket that day. Busted through traffic, parked a mile away, and ran in just in time. Field Level! (Not where my ticket said, but hey, I backed up after the anthem.) Proud of my country, proud of the boys.
No one and no group have ever outdone this performance of the National Anthem by Grateful Dead mainstays Jerry Garcia, Bob Weir, and Vince Welnick at Candlestick Park on April 12, 1993. And no audience has ever outdone this Deadhead audience at expressing their deep appreciation for a performance of the National Anthem.
Jerry especially was a HUGE GIANTS fan! Those steal your face shirts made w ball teams in them started decades ago in SF.......awesome day
yeah i'm tearing up
Who in the world would put a "dislike" on THIS?
Glad to be Grateful...
goosebumps from that harmony! O RIP Jerry
Now that's how it's done.Good job,boys.R.I.P. Jerry and Vince.
THAT Is how you CRUSH the National Anthem.
Theres this touch of sadness at "bombs bursting in air" really touching 1:35
awesome...goose bumps!
That was outrageously good.
Damn, that was good. Miss those guys singing together.
A beautiful rendition, and surely one that is probably not watched enough. The Grateful Dead rarely get the credit they deserve for their contributions to art (and to America and the world). Sounds a bit like the beautiful vocals on Attics of My Life. Awesome indeed!
Harmony at its best! Miss you Jerry.
Thank you for posting this. This version of the NA never fails to move me.
Fantaboulous!!!!!!!!! I do miss Gerry. ❤️
I love the Grateful Dead, but I didn't expect this to be anywhere near this good. Pleasantly surprised.
let phil sing
Rosie this is how to respect the country.
Love Vince with the pitch pipe!
The best version ever! Jerry, we all continue to miss you more than words can describe. (R.I.P. Vince, too)
I didn't realize it was that late (in Jerry's life). I think this sounds amazing vocally, especially for those later years. It sounds like they really worked on this.
thank you, thank you for this stirring and beautiful video. and thanks, Jerry, for everything.
So far, I've heard four explanations: seagull, pigeon, balloon, and Brent....meaning for now, the flying object remains Unidentified.
@no ididnt Jerry's soul coming back to visit a moment in time
I love Dusty's "kool aid" smile at the end. Damn, I just watched this three more times in a row!
Most american thing I have ever seen.
Stupendous Spiff indeed
Stupendous Spiff God bless America. All good people must be spinning in their graves. I still grieve for Jerry. ❤️
Thank You for my thought...
Fucking AMERICA!!!!!!
Just Listen to the Crowd
@@itaomahony502 indeed. It's amazing to see a time when everyone respected the flag. sad times we live in I guess.
@@leshtricity To quote Bobby, he would have been out protesting with BLM this summer if not for his age/COVID risk. To respect the flag is to fight for the people it represents, first and foremost.
Never knew this existed! Awesome!!
I love this so much. I've watched it many times. It makes me SO PROUD of da boys. They KILLED! GReat, grate, job! Awesome.
Best anthem I’ve heard
Wow, almost tears there. Great version!
AWESOME - just awesome!
This is Beautiful RIP Jerry
Great as always, no lip syncing there :)
Every time I hear our national anthem, I get really sad at the state of our country ... Where are those braves that care about it?
Killer. Thanks for putting this up. Made me feel great to hear them doing it.
I taped this on video when it originally aired but have no vcr to watch it anymore, thank you for posting it here, VERY NICE.
Praise God!!!!! God Bless the Grateful Dead!!!!!
I wouldn't be me with out you!!!
If only they had their instruments with them, this would have turned into an epic 3 hour jam.
That put a huge smile on my face. It was a good ride America. Goodbye California and New York. Where will freedom live next?
Boy, that's something you don't see! Way Cool!!
I miss you Jerry *wiping away tears*
@sparkomatic,
Agreed. I absolutely love this performance.
Fantastic version.
Does everybody else get that tingling feeling that starts in the skin on top of you head, then makes its way down the neck and spine and finally down the arms and legs everytime they hear a good version like this one...damn, still blows me away. Those that think America the Beautiful should be the anthem a just wrong.
How'd you get the Dead?
We asked them!
Great harmonies- always good!
Jerry and Bobby had so much talent!
Beautiful.
A priceless expropriation of art and skill. Priceless
Can’t love enough! ❤️❤️❤️❤️✌️
Greatest baseball game opening ever
That was just so awesome!
This was really cool for me. Even though I've always been a Twins fan, when I was in high school, I was a HUGE Giants fan mainly because of Will Clark. In college, I was "turned on" to the Dead, and I made it to one show. (Just happened to be 7/9/95 Chicago). What a strange juxtaposition for me to see Will The Thrill and Captain Tripps in such close proximity. And then throw in Barry Bonds! (I wonder who did more drugs, Barry or Jerry ;)
this was a long time ago, barry bonds still had a neck.
awesome!
Thank you for posting, nicely done, I miss Jerry
This is how this song should be sung.....amazing...
