      DiversityJ - Ohio Skywatching I have the same camera but I can’t seem to be able to manually zoom in on anything and it’s driving me insane! I want to be able to take pix but I don’t know if I’m doing it right. I’ve tried to search videos with how to manually zoom this camera to view planets but nothing comes up. Just videos about the Nikon P900 🤷🏻‍♀️ any suggestions please!

    • @Jayling
      @Jayling  5 років тому +23

      @@astrabula329 Hi there, I'm not sure of your level of experience with cameras or if you know what each button and settings does, or if you are experienced and if something is wrong with your camera and the zoom just won't operate. Just in case I'll link to Nikon's download center for the manual and quick start guide: downloadcenter.nikonimglib.com/en/products/495/COOLPIX_P1000.html
      Anyway, up in front of the shutter button is a lever that you can slide left and right - left for a wide field of view and right to zoom in. Also, over on the left side of the camera lens body there is a T/W button that also does the zooming but at a slower rate. Do either of those work for you to zoom in on anything?
      If they do move the lens to zoom, then you'll notice how difficult it can be to keep something in frame when so far zoomed in - with just the slightest touch you can lose whatever you were aiming at. A good sturdy tripod and video head are needed and a remote also so you don't have to touch the camera to snap a photo when zoomed in.
      If all that is working and you're wanting to film a planet, I use manual settings and manually focus in Movie Manual Mode, to give me full control over settings. It's nice having the focus ring on the end of the lens, but it's so hard to focus when zoomed in so far - just be as gentle as possible and try to dial in the focus best ya can.
      The ISO and Shutter Speed will vary depending on what object you're trying to get but in most of my videos I'll leave that information on screen to show what I was using at the time. I sure hope your camera is working and you get it all sorted. Good luck to you. :)

      I think its more scary to think about the space between the planets. I mean, there is literally nothing for 100s of millions and even billions of kilometers, and then there is - even though it is a big planet - a tiny spec of something.
      And behind our solar system there is 1000s of times more nothing (at least 4.2 light years to Alpha Centauri).

    Which star did you capture?
    I amazingly got a red one and could not believe it when I captured it. I saw what looked like a ball of dancing plasma waves of red on my P1000.
    I found stars might have different settings than the moon. It makes you aware how close they are.
    When you realize what amount of zoom it needs to zoom in on a mountain, and then you do that with the moon, you become aware of the moon's proximity.
    When I captured my red star, I avoided blurryness when I manually adjusted the focus of it to a tiny size, then zoomed in again, then focus adjusted it back to a tiny size and repeated until it was zoomed in as far as I could go. Then I video recorded it. Although it was smaller, it was a clear smaller dancing star.
    Then I just randomly took a far away shot of the star. It looked like a tiny dot in the picture. When I enlarged the photo, I saw plasma waves, like I caught the star in motion. I couldn't believe it.

    • @Jayling
      @Jayling  5 років тому +2

      Well now, that's a tough question. I adore the zoom on the Nikon P900 & P1000, but both cameras have limitations. For video on the P1000 while filming the sky at night, it has a limited ISO range, also I need the ability to change the ISO on the fly during recording, but can't with using the record on the camera itself (but I can when not using the camera's recording function and instead recording on the Ninja). I'm also not fond of the picture quality & color I get with the P1000 when filming the sky, either in raw or jpg, so I much prefer using the Canon 80D for still photos. For zoom range, the P1000 wins, for photos and better menu and settings control, the Canon. I'd love to get the Sigma 60-600mm lens for the Canon and see how well it matches up with the P1000, even though it still won't reach the zoom range, but it costs $2,000 (yikes!). I love the Canon and adored the Nikon D500 dslr too, though only had it a few days.

    You should get with SuperZoom Videos and do a moon comparison video, you showing the moon from the North and him from the South. That would be cool. What would be interesting is the timing of when he records and when you do yours, your time zones are different.
    Better yet, if you can see it during the day, can he see it at night at the same time?

    • @algladyou
      @algladyou 5 років тому

      Different time zones. That says it all. If one person can see it on daytime then night time due to time duration. Surely it is the same from her seeing it at day and him at night or vice versa.

      This must include lunar eclipses, tides, different stars, the reason why we do not see America from Europe, tectonic plates, solar eclipses and different weights depending on where you are on the planet.
      In addition maybe why other celestial bodies move around others.
      The globe model includes everything in a single model. For the flat earth you need at least 10.

      Hello there, the settings can change depending on which camera is used and the time of night, etc. Basically I oftentimes start out with a high ISO to find the planet, and then once found manually adjust the ISO back down to a lower number, sometimes 200, 400 or 800 ISO, and then adjust the shutter speed to either darken it up or lighten it, possibly around 1/80 or 1/60 here in this video for Saturn (probably faster speed like 1/100 for Jupiter), and then manually focus the lens to get it in the best. You kind of just have to test and see which settings work out for you with your equipment. If they're still blown out, adjust the shutter speed to a faster number until it comes in nicely. Good luck to you. :)
