I enjoyed the film. I found the first half particularly good. I felt the ending was largely unnecessary and made the film look a bit cliched - and a bit close to The Talented Mr Ripley. I thought that the film was going to end when Venetia calls him out saying that some people leave, some stay - and all that stuff about moths. If the film finished here it would have actually been a better film. By then the point of the film became very clear and I think a lot of people could relate to it. It really would have left the audience thinking and reflecting. Instead a long coda was glued on that actually obscured and somewhat trivialised the core message. But nevertheless an insightful story of desire, lust, obsession, narcissism, competition in trying to get into the 'in' groups and jealously. Rather than being about the English aristocracy, I think it was more a commentary on the frivolity and excesses of the English bourgoisie/upper middle classes, particularly during that time (the neo-liberal, "Cool Britannia era -1990s up to the 2008 financial crisis). On the music, I would not call it a masterpiece. But the music blended in with the imagery and narrative, did not distract, and did its job.
