Gabe, please post the link of this hotel with the helpful hotel manager. Your viewers planning to travel to Almaty can consider staying there and be taken care of by such an honest and helpful lady :)
From what I understand is that some airports at least have terrible transportation options on purpose so they can overcharge travelers with inflated taxi fares. So they actively oppose a cheap bus service for example and many times they have some connections with people on the city council who lobbies for them. Next month im going to Koh Samui and ive already been warned that this is the case over there. I have seen text messages from travelers who tried to arrange transport themselves but got replies that local drivers cant take the ride because they dont want to get in to trouble. My plan is at least to simply walk to the nearest town with my backpack and try to get transportation further in to the island from there.

You did a great job. That mountain was too steep. It seemed the more you walked up the farther away the end looked. Have really enjoyed the trip and thanks for your way of explaining the taxis so people can be on guard.😊❤
Think you experienced something of a left over from the Soviet days,Gabs, Marshrutka bus...an interesting form of transport and getting to meet people and very cheap indeed.

Once again some beautiful mountain scenery. Shame the cable car wasn’t working but the lodge was amazing in itself. This has been a a truly wonderful adventure in Kazakhstan. At least your getting a shuttle from the hotel to the airport, wont have to worry about anymore scams. Till the next adventure (which is sounding epic already) Cheers ❤
Nice way to get the correct rate... ask the locals. Once on a bus in Vietnam the woman collecting tickets charged me for me and my two bags, in addition to that she gave me no change which should have been half of what I gave her. the locals were surprised that she even charged me for my luggage let alone not giving me any change. by the time I was about to get off the whole bus was practically yelling at her. she finally gave me the change but still kept the money for me having bags, people were still angry at her because of that. I got off and someone I got of with said she could technically charge me for my bags but they never actually do that and the fact that she pocketed my change really pissed off all the locals. LPT ask local bystanders whenever possible.
Gabriel, lucky you aren’t being interogated by viewing El Arish plane loads landing from India and Qatar. A couple of trucks is all to have traveled thru the border - & after two weeks the reluctance continues despite official starements of support. The weather is high 60's at night and into the 80's daytime. We can see why this port is convenient. The water temperature at 79°f/26°C is comparable to that of a swimming pool, but it might be higher than most open water swimmers prefer for serious swimming.
It would be interesting to see a compilation of the biggest scams you have encountered in your travels. And maybe one on the best deals you have found.
Gabriel High-roller Traveler... Harald will not be happy with your quitting halfway up the hill. At least he had the excuse of being way too dangerous in the Himalayas. Anyway. Nicely done.
I bet a lot of people would be surprised at the economy car there. Not going to be a base model Altima or Corolla lol. You would be lucky if it has seatbelts 😂
Gabriel - You spend a lot of time talking about taxi fee ‘scams’ but how and from what source did you determine what you think the right fee should be? How current or authoritative is that source? Was it from before the Ukraine war started and oil embargoes were put in place? Just some things to think about before you call an entire area’s taxi drivers scammers.
In this video I mentioned that the taxi ride ordered from an app that was a 30 minute ride cost 3,500 tenge. Meanwhile, the guy tried to charge 30,000 for about the same distance, from the airport into the city. So what do you think, does 10 times the price seem like overcharging? I also mentioned that the manager at my hotel agreed the taxi drivers overcharge foreigners, including a Korean couple who paid 50,000 from the airport. One guy I talked to in this video tried to charge 60,000 and another tried to charge 10,000 for a fifteen minute ride, that I ended up paying 700 for. So every taxi driver I encountered tried to overcharge by a huge amount, except for the one driving the shuttle.
Thanks for your reply. Sounds like good data, but I still wonder if an app and a hotel manager are authoritative sources for the taxi business there. I just suspect there may be more to the story than that all taxi drivers are scamming just for the sake of ripping off.
Yes, an app and a hotel manager are your best sources, certainly not the taxi drivers themselves. They're just trying to overcharge foreigners as much as they can, that's really all there is to it. The fair price is quite inexpensive, similar to what the apps are charging. You can expect to pay more if you don't use one of the apps, but that doesn't justify them charging five or ten times the price.
@@AlwaysAwesome001 I think that I would have tried to make the offer of cash currency too. Maybe I'll qualify for some DNC newthink? Your taxi experiences here reminded me a lot of China, and if you ever find your way back there and travel around deeper into the country you'll likely face the greatly exaggerated taxi prices also (as well as fake taxis and/or fake meters in the taxis). You do have the option to try and bargain the prices downwards if not a metered fare but you generally have to go at the haggling pretty agressively (being able to speak the language helps greatly). Never accept drivers that approach you either at a train station or whatever, rather flag one down yourself and you'll have a better chance for somewhat of a fairer price - I'd think that applies to a lot of countries with similar things going on.
It is very beautiful, but this is not the real Kazakhstan. It's a decorative piece, like African villages for tourists :) The real Kazakhstan should be discovered and risked a little - a motorcycle, a bicycle, roads, steppes and deserts, mountains, people, villages of shepherds, mare's milk and horse meat dishes, endless expanses. This applies to the whole of Central Asia, the land of nomads, probably cooler only in African countries
