Ruth, I'd recommend you search out a 1945 film 'I Know where I'm Going'
A love story, it features a small boat battling the Corryvreckan whirlpool as a key part of the plot. The film itself is steeped in folklore and captures the etheral, almost mystical sense of the Scottish Isles.

The reasons for there being no woodland stem indirectly from the Act of Union. 1. The huge Caledonian Forest was gradually cut down to provide timber for the wooden warships of the growing 'British" navy, not just timber for the actual frames, decks and planking but also for the masts and spars, etc. The trees were cut and floated down rivers to the coast. And of course the British navy was huge. 2. Following the Jacobite risings we had the clearings. The indigenous people and their ragged cattle were cleared from the land to make way for sheep (which eat the tops out of young saplings, and for sporting estates for the new rich (industrial revolution) - they paid gamekeepers to annually carry out planned burnings of the hills and moors to provide new growth heather for grouse to feed on.

andyallan2909 -- that is all very true. Also, it is said that all the trees in Fife were cut down to build the Great Michael for James IV's navy. It was the largest warship of its day, and put the fear of god into the English. Incidentally, much of the Black Forest was cut down and floated down the Rhine to build ships for the Dutch East India Company, Holland being somewhat deficient in the forestry department. The Germans had the good sense to replant it.

It's funny, I always used to think Corryvreckan was near Islay due to Ardbeg naming one of their whiskies 'Corryvreckan' ha ha. Fantastic video, that's my curiosity fulfilled.

Haha I think they name a lot of Islay whiskies from nearby landmarks. Like Machir Bay from Kilchoman is named after the nearby beach

@ruthaisling Ha,ha very good point. Machir Bay is so beautiful and the whisky is even better, especially the cask strength.

Oh wow! Did they leave Scotland for North Carolina? I read a plaque at the beach there last year about how they loaded the boats which left for North Carolina. I suggest you to watch the other video I made about Jura so you can see the beach, maybe that’s the exact point your ancestors left from!

Lovely video, Ruth, thanks. We went to Jura twice on a trip to Islay last year but didn’t get as far as the whirlpools - did have our 5 year old son with us so not sure that would have been wise. Loved Jura and did say the tide between Islay and Jura is fierce - not sure I have seen anything like it and it was a comparatively calm day when we went over - I wouldn’t imagine it would be an area for an inexperienced sailor! Loved this video and LOVE Jura - definitely a place to go back too - stunning wilderness and just literally magical

Yes, the whole island should be covered with trees, maybe a little stunted and windblown in places, but growing nevertheless. Less sheep and more trees. Nakd bars are excellent and vegan. '1984' is one of the best books ever written and can be applied to what's happening today... psychologically I think we're all in the whirlpools of Corryvreckan. Glad you enjoyed the trip and had great weather.

Wow that whirlpool was quite something - thank you for showing us, I don't think I could do the boat trip, much as I'd like too, I have a "thing" about deep water, so I really appreciate seeing it through your eyes. When we visited Orkney in 2011, we saw a spectacular "roost" between Mainland Orkney and Eynhallow Island - it was extremely windy and the racing, churning water was really visible and awe inspiring! Fabulous video thank you 💙🦋

It's the other way round, motey99. Scotland has been depopulated, relative to everywhere else. East, west, south, north abandoned farms and settlements all over the shop, even in the Central Belt if you know where to look.

Shokz…that may be an advert, but I swear by them! I live in Charleston, SC and walk 3mi downtown everyday. The Shokz is just as Ruth says…you can hear everything around you but also music, podcasts, etc perfectly.

But how do you not travel without a small pair of binoculars?!
