'Mohanam' reminds me the Mysore VaasudEvaacaarya kriti wherein he beseeches Lord Rama to save him - " Raa Raa Raajeeva Lochana"; Certainly remember this first due to the fact that it was listened recently , sung by a couple of Vocalists! The ragam is 28 HariKaambhoji janya with notes..S R2 G3 P D2 S / S D2 P G3 R2 S that does not contain Madhyamam and Nishādham; All of five notes, the harmonious notes being the Gandhara and the Dhaivata, this penatonic scale has the Panchama as it's significant anchoring note.The Classical beauty of this scale as a raga in itself unfolds when the characteristic gamakas are incorporated. Saint Thyagaraja has reveled in this raga and created several masterpieces including this one-'Mohana rama' and “Nannu Palimpa”. Of course we cannot negate the krities... “En Palli Kondeerayya,” wherein Arunachala Kavi questions Sri Ranganatha as to why he has decided to lie down in Srirangam a famous piece that begins in Mohanam; . Papanasam Sivan's “Kapali Karunai Nilavu” on Lord Kapaleeswara and “Narayana Divya Namam” both in beautiful Thamizh.
Here the well known academician singer Thamarakkad Govindan Namboothiri presented a comprehensive Ragaalapana. The lyrical beauty enhances the rendition in all respects while praying Lord Rama in the enchanting Mohanam! Did maintain perfect tone n diction with lovely eloquence with no chance to enhance voice. Charanam is exceptionally cute ( to my wonder, almost akin to the phrased one in the Dikshitar kriti- " narasimhaagaccha parabrahma puccha sveccha svaccha"in the same ragam ) with short words that had to be linked by a fast mode as entailed by the composition, sung very melodiously; But no harm, here the last line in the Charanam-'guri maimaraci sevinchiri vara thyaagaraja varadaakhila jagan' in slow mode!
