- This video is an interview I did with my mother, better known as Granny on the blog. A wasper was bothering us during part of the interview so that's what she was trying to swarp away from us : ) As I listened back to the interview I heard more than a few words and word pronunciations that are from Appalachian Language. Hope you enjoy hearing from Granny!

Your mother is beautiful now and was a lovely younger lady, too. When you showed the photo of her years ago at the end next to her mom, your maternal grandmother, I noticed that you look so much like her ... same smile, same eyes. This interview is absolutely priceless. Her fond memories of young childhood, growing up and marriage years made me smile from ear to ear. Times were simpler and more innocent back then. Life was not rushed or caught up in material things, electronic gadgets and hurry, Hurry, HURRY. Family bonds were close, strong and so special. What you have here in this 30 minute interview/chat is like the brightest gemstone in the jewelry store! Plus, your mother's humble sweetness and polite manners shine through, too. Her white hair is like a pretty crown. Your questions were interesting and her replies were even more interesting. Watching this made me day. Thank-you.

Such a youngster. 7/23/1938.
My Mom was born in 1929. She is four years younger than her Aunt. My Granny helped raise her sister, so Mom and Aunt Georgie May were very close. Granny and Granddaddy had a Standard Oil service station. Granny worked there and she picked out my Dad for my Mom. When Granny and Grandaddy turned fifty, they sold everything to be houseparents at a Baptist Children’s home. I loved visiting there. They had a big “cottage” on the campus. It was also a farm with cattle and big gardens. We all played and had fun. I had no idea those children were orphans. Many of them kept in touch with Granny and Granddaddy through the years. Many went to Vietnam. Many went to college.
I can’t imagine this beautiful lady marrying any other than a good, solid gentleman. What a true gem she is.

Everyone should be doing this with our parents/grandparents right now because once theyre gone their memories and stories are gone forever and theres no going back to ask them.. i love this Tipper! Ask her why she named you Tipper haha i love your name so much.

I was born in nw Arkansas,& when i was 4 we moved to bare panhandle of texas,windy & dry! I always loved & missed Arkansas especially my relatives!! Everything would grow,loved the smell summer or winter! In winter loved smell of woodburning in stove! Good fresh food from the garden in summer! I know i would have loved Appalachia,as i got older & learned about it!!

Oh my goodness! Isn’t she just precious. My husband and I really enjoyed this episode. It made me think of my Grandma Pearl. We all really need to be thankful for our parents and grandparents. Thank you for sharing and thank her as well.
This is for Granny. At the very end of my fifth grade when I was 11 years old, I got sick. Mama called our doctor, and he came to the house, like they did in those days. After he examined me, I’m pretty sure he knew what my problem was. I had some blood tests two or three days later which confirmed what the doctor already thought. It was rheumatic fever, like you had. I was bedridden for 20 months, so I know what you went through. Thankfully, we both eventually recovered. We have been mightily blessed.
Now, this is for those other folks who see this UA-cam video. Rheumatic fever is caused by streptococcus bacterium. Typically it shows up with a strep throat. What happens is that sometimes the bacterium gets in the bloodstream and creates problems, mainly growing nodules on the valves of the heart, which then causes the heart to pump less efficiently because a heart murmur will have formed. Rheumatic fever is not as common as it was years ago because doctors almost always prescribe antibiotics if the patient has strep throat. I’m going through all this because if you have a child or grandchild or anyone you know, especially children, with a sore throat, head to your doctor right away. The doctor can then make an examination and determine what is causing the sore throat. If not treated on time, that child could possibly wind up with rheumatic fever, which is a serious disease that could cause damage to the child’s heart, or worse.

You don't know how much listening to you made me miss my mother and grandmother. Your voice sounds so much like my grandma Guthrie. I really enjoyed your life story. Steve, Tipper, and Paul along with the grandkids and great grandkids will always have this what a treasure. This would be worth more than any worldly possession to me. I wished we had done this with my parents and grandparents. They have all gone on to be with Our LORD AND SAVIOR. Looking forward to that great reunion day.
Maybe someday I will get the chance to visit with you in person. I would so much enjoy talking and telling each other about our families.
Christmas was always a special time for our family too, especially about hearing you tell of pumpkin pies and all the food and deserts.
Girl, I really enjoyed the birds chirping and singing around your place. Sounds so peaceful and pretty, love to be chilling with you out on that porch.

This interview took place in the nicest setting with all the plants in the background. I could just sit out there and relax for hours. What a beautiful place to live!
I love the name Xenia. My daughter was baptized as “Xenia” after Saint Xenia of St Petersburg Russia. Xenia lost her husband in battle and spent the rest of her life wondering around St Petersburg and praying for people. She gave everything she owned to the poor. Many miracles and prophetic messages were reported to have been done by her. My daughters god mother is from St. Petersburg Russia and left the church once she became an adult and started to get drunk every night. She told us that a woman stopped her on her way home one night and helped lead her back to her house and warned her that the path she was leading would eventually destroy her. When she woke up she said that she realized that Saint Xenia had been sent by God to warn her so she repented and returned to the Church.
So enjoyed listening to all she so kindly shared , what a preciousness family is ...loved that part where she said he talked me into getting married , he could talk me into anything ❤️💐thank you for letting us listen 🎶❣️🎶

I was born and raised in the middle of the ozark mountains of Arkansas and your accent and ways are just like ours. Just like your corn bread and your chocolate gravy and your biscuits and your cornbread i have wacthed my great grandma my grandmother and my mamma do it the same way. There is not much history on us in the ozark mountains but after finding your cooking i think we might actualy have been there at one time. My mamma is irish and my dad is english blend as he called it. They are gone now but i try to keep the recipe's and cook what i was raised with. Good lord i miss them days. God love you.
The Arkansas Ozarks are stunning and the people are so warm and friendly!! Just came back from a trip to the Ozarks!

She reminds me of my Nanny, my dad's mother. She was born in 1913 and lived til 2006. Loved listening to her tell us about her childhood. She married my Pappy at 13 and my dad was born when she was 15. She was a beautiful person.

What a beautiful lady and interview this was. I am the proud son of an Appalachian mother and father who migrated to the auto factories in the late 50s. Appalachia was in there hearts as there fondest memories to the day they died. Your mother’s story’s was similar to the stories I was told about growing up in Appalachia. While I have grown up in Ohio, I try to live up to my roots. Your promise means something, help anyone you can, we are all the same under gods eyes and most importantly, Jesus Christ is our savior.
Tipper, I absolutely love all your videos. It is a blessing from God every time I sit down to listen and watch. Ms. Evelyn is a sweetheart 💕. She reminds me of my dear mother (RIP) She would have been 100 yesterday. God bless you Tipper. ❤🙏

Turkey and pumpkin pie is a favorite for sure for the same reason as this sweet lady. How precious she is. Please keep videoing and recording these great stories, and tell her we all love her because she brings back some of our own family that are now gone. Ask if they had a rolling store that came around to the homes in the rural country. Any snake stories to tell? Gosh, I’d love to talk and listen more.
I had to share this: My Granny’s name was Dovie LOUZENA (often called “Zeeny”, her mother was my Big Grandma, my mother’s name is Grace. So many similar names! My mama was born in a 2-room log cabin on a freezing cold January night. My Big Grandaddy was a blacksmith and a potter. He dug the clay out of the side of the mountain to make his pottery. My Little Grandma (my mother’s great grandmother) was about 4 1/2 feet tall but they say she chased a mountain lion (painter) out of her chicken yard with a brush broom. 😂

Judi Hightower, I've never heard anyone else mentioning having a "little grandma" & a "big grandma". As far back as I can remember, I've always called my grandmothers, " big grandma" & "little grandma". Little grandma didn't mind the name I gave her, but big grandma didn't like her name.

Your Mama is so sweet! Her hair is the color of my moms! Your mamas stories remind me of moms. They played and were so innocent. Lived on the land and loved each other. Thank you for sharing your mama with us! She is truly precious! 🥰
Listening to her brings back stories my Mama would tell. My Mama was the youngest of 13 and had nieces and nephews older than her. We called them Aunt and Uncle too. We just couldn't get it straight that we had cousins older than our Mama. Mama loved her canning too. We helped her every year. There were 7 of us. I'm happy two of my girls love to can with me.
Steve Earle has a song titled "Hillbilly Highway", your Mother's family lived it with some of the siblings being Detroit City bound. Great job with this channel Tipper, always know the effort and fuss you put into is very much appreciated! .... It's your channel so do what you want, but I'd love to hear some more memories from your Mother. Tell her She's very appreciated too!
Tipper...this make me tear up....this precious lady reminds me so much of my mom......she was born in 1937, has Snow White hair, a a bit raspy voice just like Mrs Evelyn here has! What a flood of memories you cause in us hillbillies that are no longer in them thar hills! Thank you very much!
My dad had two and one half kidney's and he had surgery in Ashville I was around seven years old I still have the post card he sent me while he was in the hospital back then you had to stay several day after surgery not like not they send you home the same day surgery. Another great interview.

Thank you for documenting and sharing your stories on UA-cam. What a treasure! I have been reading Appalachian fiction (James Still, Lee Smith, Silas House) for about fifteen years and it whetted a hunger in my heart to learn more about homesteading, ancestry, and roots of faith in our country. I've also visited Kentucky, West Virginia, and North Carolina many times and the mountains and rivers carved out a special knick in my heart. Oh, if we could all pause long enough to listen to these dear souls and live a life worthy of them: gratitude and humility before God.

There's a song in that,,,,The Hiway Took Our Garden,,,,now how do I feed my family...I know this is old,,,but this lady reminds me so much of my grandmother,,,I so wish we had video recorders back then her and my grandpa had aileron stories and sayin's. My Mother was born March 7, 1940. She passed March 2, 2020 . Your Mothers mannerisms remind me SO much of my dear sweet Mother, cherish her. Thank you for sharing her sweet soul.

As a history buff, I find that one of the great tragedies of historic study is “Great Man history”, where we only hear of kings and generals and aristocrats, but never from the normal people.
I thank you so much, for posting Evelyn’s story, so that we, as well as the people of the future, can know what she experienced and how she lived.

I could sit here till dark and listen to this sweet lady tell stories. Such a blessing God gives us. Daddy passed before Mother but said listen to her. I did just as Daddy said. They were together 69 years on earth; still together right now in Heaven!
Really enjoyed Granny's stories. She speaks so well and I feel like I could just come and sit a while with her. I wish young people could grasp these conversations with older people and learn to appreciate days gone by. My mother's family was large and we loved hearing old stories.
Awww! This makes me miss my Grandmother Elsie Grace died 98 & my Great Grandmother Della Lavada age 103 when she passed. ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️🙏🙏🙏🙏. I spent so many years talking to them. I am the Irish keeper of the family history. You are the same. She is truly a treasure ❤️.

Beth Melt, I'm also born & raised in Middle Tennessee. My grandparents & great-grandparents were from the hills of northern Middle Tennessee -- Clay & Macon counties & Jackson County. This beautiful lady sounds just like my mother, aunts & grandmothers talking. So many of her words & expressions are how they talked. It was always such a joy to hear them talk about how they grew up, the things they did, games they played, the food they ate, & just everyday life. ❤️

I enjoy your channel…you may live in a very different world from where I come from (Southern California), but I’m convinced that people are people whether they hail from Appalachia, SoCal, or some place in between.
While it’s true folks may differ a bit in regard to how we look, how we talk, or where our people were born…it’s the similarities we share as humans that matter most. We’re more alike than different and everyone has a few notes to contribute to our common symphony. This just reminds me that back in the day, I had an Aunt named Evelyn...but we didn't pronounce her name as Evelyn...We called he Ava-leen. Funny how we draw out those vowels to the point that they actually become different vowels sometimes. But what a beautiful, sweet lady, and so good with her recollection!!
This is such a sweet sweet video. I think she’s fascinating. In a rush upside world she’s a breath of fresh air. She reminds me of my grandpa and his stories. He’ll be 94 this year.

Your mother reminds me of my Nannie. She and my grandpa moved their family from Winston Salem to Michigan to work in the auto factories as well when my dad was just a few years old. I wish someone had filmed my Nannie and asked her all these questions as well. I never knew any of her family except one of her sisters who also lived in MI. I really know very little of my families history. I'm so enjoying listening to your mom's history!

I did Home Health are for several Years, the Man I took care of Lived to be 103 Years Old! Sooo enjoyed all his Stories, learned sooo much from him! He was a Joy to be around! He knew the Bible from Beginning to the End! He was a Walking Encyclopedia! His Mind was as Sharp as A Tack, up until. He Passed Away! He was still Driving at 101 Years Old! Spend as much time with your Mother as you Possibly can! She is a Lovely Lady!

My grama who passed a few years ago now, Her family is from Tennessee. Her name was Lettie Jenkins (Lettie Bell after marriage). She looks and sounds so much like Granny, it almost felt as tho I got to spend time with her today.❤
