Fuel Priming System For Mechanical Fuel Injection

  • Here’s a simple electric fuel priming system for a Hilborn mechanical fuel setup.
I decided to go with this setup because I don’t always have the same person helping me at the track and therefore I don’t have to teach someone to prime my engine with a squirt bottle (into the stacks) each weekend. I simply press the fuel pump switch until there’s enough fuel to start it up.
The simple electric fuel pump makes 6psi of pressure and with the one way valve I know that the mechanical fuel pump won’t push fuel backwards into the primer system.
    Benefits
    Easy self priming
No need to remove the methanol from the fuel system at the end of the weekend
Here's a link to my other video where I start the engine using the priming system.

Wow , I can't believe I have not seen your channel until today , subscribed !!! Your valve cover combination is unique .

Thanks Mike. The valve cover combination was temporary. I really wanted to run vintage cast aluminum Donovan covers rather than the fabricated aluminum ones - only to make the car more nostalgic. I will say that the fabricated covers are really well made and they are better for a racecar because I need to take them off regularly to check valve lash. The biggest issue is that I have much taller valve springs than the motor came with from the factory and this means that I have to run spacers to run the older Donovan covers... one more thing to take on and off.... the things I do to make this sucker look vintage...
I'll soon be releasing a new video showing the Donovan covers on the motor. Keep your eyes peeled.

I like the simplicity in this design, does the amount of race gas’s that you introduce into the fuel lines clean the system to make fuel system cleaning after use irrelevant? Cheers Wayne

To clean the fuel system I always shut off the methanol before I run the priming with race gas. The motor doesn’t like running on gas for long. It sputters and pops, but once I’ve done that, the injectors, jets and barrel valve is free of methanol.
I still need to blow out the rest of the fuel system below the race gas fuel line T.
Ultimately, it works really well for me.

Great video, thanks for sharing!! As you say..."a simple little system"....but as I've been taught (and how I run my own race program), most often if you stick to simplicity and basics, you'll end up with a product that is fairly easy to run & maintain (and is consistent). And here's the BIG benefit....you get to go out, race, and have FUN!!! And not spend every moment at the track, babysitting some overly complex piece of equipment. I use the same philosophy, whether running the Super Pro class in bracket racing, or the NHRA Heritage Series where I can run in an Index Class...and/or in the Hot Rod category (where you dial your own)✌😎.

      That’s exactly it.
A good friend of mine suggested that I keep a simple setup that is super repeatable to minimize the stress at the track. That way you know exactly what steps are required to get the job done efficiently. No hiccups.
      Thanks for sharing your thoughts!

How does the fuel line from the back of the stacks? I would want to run line through the firewall? Thanks

    • @kiltedmoto
      @kiltedmoto  Рік тому +3

Hi Curtis. The primer fuel line runs from the auxiliary fuel tank (race gas) to an electric pump, then up to the barrel valve which distributes the race gas directly into each cylinder. You can see the aluminum (silver coloured) barrel valve that distributes the fuel through small rubber lines to each stack on the injection system.
Think of the race gas replacing the methanol temporarily while I start the engine. The motor will start easier in the cold with race gas, plus I need to prime the mechanical fuel pump on the motor because it is higher than the fuel tank.
While I'm starting the motor on race gas, I open the "shut off" valve on the mechanical fuel pump which is spinning at this point allowing it to prime with methanol and force methanol into the barrel valve, distributing the fuel to each cylinder. The motor only runs on race gas for a few seconds before the methanol starts to flow into the cylinders. At that point I stop pumping the race fuel and run solely on methanol.
      Does that make sense?
