    Ф ф[ “F” in “Father”/Film]
    Letter name: Ef
    Equivalent to English letter “F”.
    Pronounced like “F” in “Father”.
This is another very interesting Russian letter. Sometimes it's quite difficult for foreigners to write it and to remember as well because it can be really challenging to remember it, due to his form.
    Originated from the Greek Alphabet:
    Letter : Phi Ф[uppercase] φ[Lowercase]
Sound can by modified. It's also important to know that this letter sounds like [f ]but in some situations it can sound as [VA].
And a good word association with this letter is :

Фиг вaм [Fig vam]=A colloquial Russian phrase, euphemism of a strong Russian swear word, meaning: “You won’t get anything from me”.
A hand gesture made by making a fist and sticking the thumb between the pointer and middle finger, usually carries a vulgar meaning (known as the "fig sign")
"Фиг вам!" ― "Fig vam!" ― "Screw you!" (roughly, you will get nothing at all)
    en.wiktionary.org/wiki

This is literally the way to tell somebody that you don't want to do something.
And like you don't care about these people just like saying: “Leave me alone. I don't want to do what you ask me to do “
Let's have some practice with Russian - English similar words :
    -Effect
    ЭФФЕКТ
    Efékt

    I don't pronounce it twice. I don't say “ ef +fect. Well , no, we
don't speak like this. It mostly sounds like a one letter [f] {EFECT}, but I pronounced it really long.
    -Fact
    ФАКТ
    Fakt
    -Philosophy
    ФИЛОСОФИЯ
    Filasófiya
    -Myth
    МИФ

Just in this Russian word you need to pronounce this soft sign [ь].
    9.
    Э э [“E” in “Ted”]
In some cases can be pronounced as [ee].
A good word association for this letter is:
Эльбруc[Elbrus]=Mount Elbrus is a dormant volcano in the Caucasus mountains in Southern Russia. I tis the highest mountain in Europe. You can read the description and you can see the photo. If you want to learn more of course you can also find some more information on the Internet.

Also a brand name of cleaning detergent.
    -Egoist*
    ЭГОИСТ

The ending 'IST' of Greek origin means "one who does or makes" is equivalent
to a suffix 'ИСТ' in words like "optimist" (оптимист), egoist (эгоист),
    journalist (журналист), etc.
    -Emotion
    ЭМОЦИЯ
    Emótsiya
Good news: this is the end of this lesson. No more weird-looking Russian letters
that have similar sounds. In the next lesson- part 4, we'll have Russian
letters and Russian sounds that don't exist at all in English .

Learn Russian letters that look strange but have familiar sounds. Russian lessons with fun and easy exercises that will hack your brain to read in Russian instantly. There are many of you who asked me to create a more detailed video on Russian alphabet. Even though there are already lots of videos that teach Russian alphabet, I noticed that they are not really teaching you to read in Russian - not only to learn how each Russian letter is pronounced separately but to understand how they can be pronounced in words taking into account that they can have different sounds depending on their position in a word. In these lessons, you will also discover Russian-English similar words and cognates that will help you get used to Cyrillic letters. The next lesson will be published in one day - 'Russian letters and sounds that don't exist in English'.

English words which end in ‘TION‘, ‘CION’, ‘SION‘ are equivalent to Russian words ending with ‘ЦИЯ‘ or ‘СИЯ‘.
English words ending on ‘LOGY‘ and ‘TICS‘/’MICS’ are of Greek origin and havetheir equivalents in Russian language as ‘ЛОГИЯ‘ И ‘ТИКА‘/’МИКА’ accordingly.
    1.
    Б б [B as in “Bar”]
    Letter name: Beh
    Sound can be modified.
So here is the first Russian strange looking letter that has a familiar sound.
This is a letter [Beh]. And it sounds like [Ba ] ; well in some situations.
Again it depends on the position of this letter. It may also sound as [Pa]
When it comes at the end of a word.
And as you understand is it's an equivalent to an English [b] . So it really sounds almost the same as an English [b ]in words like “Bar”, “Book” etc.
And the word association that we have with this letter is
    Grandmother
    Бaбушкa
    Babushka

I know that many foreigners believe that we need to put stress actually on a
letter [y=U/oo], but it's not correct. It's correct to say [babushka]
Would you like some practice with Russian - English cognates ?
Well here they are . Let's try to guess :
    -Biology
    Биология
    [Bialógiya]
    -Balcony
    Балкон
    [Balkón]
    -Banana
    Банан
    Banan
    -Barbeque
    Барбекю
    Barbekyu
It's not Russian word. So it's quite easy to guess it .
    -Bottle
    Бутылка
    Butylka
    -Brother
    Брат
    Brat
Well it doesn't sound completely the same as as its English equivalent {brother}but anyway there are some similarities in sounds.
    -Bank
    Банк
    [Bank]
    2.
    Г г [“G” in “Get”/ “K” *]
    Letter name: Geh
This strange looking Russian letter is a letter “Geh” and its sound is [Ga].
In some situations depending on its position it may sound like [K].

If letter is positioned at the end of a word it sounds like [K in “key”] For example Друг[Druk]= friend.
And if you think that this letter looks really strange, we just need to remember that it comes from a Greek Alphabet : Г γ.[Gamma].
A word association that we have with this letter, probably not the best one, but anyway you should know. This is also somewhat a part of our culture and this is a word:
    Person of lower-class
    Гoпник
    Gopnik
A young man or a woman of lower-class background that usually lives in Russian suburb areas and can be part of a gang. So you can read the description and you can read more about this type of people on the Internet but the most important thing that I want to tell you is that you should beware of these people if you are in
Russia. Well there are not so many nowadays, but anyway you can meet them in some small cities and this is not a good acquaintance .
Let's have some practice with Russian -English similar words :
