  • As guest speaker at Sovereign Challenge VIII, actor Michael Krebs presents re-election speech to U.S. Special Operations Command Officers and Diplomats from around the world in Savannah, Georgia. The origins of the script are with Chicago History Museum, and an election speech for the highly successful exhibit "The Last Best Hope of Earth: Abraham Lincoln and the Promise of America".
"The speech was in such demand that I was soon in Washington DC recording it for Library of Congress and adding more work days as the exhibit gained success. Thereafter becoming my weekly performance material in CHM's Voices From History Program for the next 9 years. I have performed this speech for 20 years across the United States, and it is always well received both north and south." Michael Krebs

As young African from Cameroon studying law in United states, while listening to this American state man power speech. I can say , .it entirely related to our political struggles. I pray his spirit and vision live in me as I seek election of the presidency I'm due time.

“Those words seem to promise that, in due time, the weights and bondage of servitude shall be lifted from the shoulders of all men; and that all should be given an equal chance- in the race of life.“
I teared up at exactly that moment.

Makes me emotional reading something so true. I’m 20 now, as I grew up I always told myself that this country was all about integrity and unity, but we really do have an issue with this these days, 100%. And the one man I’ve always mentioned when it came to this was men like Lincoln and even Roosevelt. Many more. Keep in mind that this isn’t ancient history, these men were alive and in office not long ago really. We can change.

I believe he wrote the little girl back.
She had asked him if he had any
      daughters,and he wrote back :
      I regret to say I do not,wich I
      have always found so touching.
How strange life is, that although he had 4 sons, this particular Lincoln
family's name died out.He had only
      one grandson,named Abraham, who
      died young.

It's funny how people say that... I'm no expert on Lincoln but I know that at the time of his presidency many people hated him. The South did obviously but many Democrats in the Union did also, and even people of his own party were very critical of him. It just goes to show if we did have a "Lincoln" today we probably wouldn't see him in that way. It takes retrospect.

Lincoln justified his temporary suspension of habeas corpus during our civil war. As a lawyer he should have known well that no right of the people may be even temporarily revoked. As President he violated his oath.
His refusal to enforce the proposition that all men are created equal and endowed by their Creator with certain inalienable rights until it was politically feasible could be seen as shrewd or cowardly. Neither of these issues cancels his greatness nor the gratitude I feel for the man.

One can argue detainees known to be innocent, kept indefinitely in Guantanamo Bay, are not protected by Constitutional law but someone explain why we U.S. citizens have no recognized rights in or out of court while elites like the former President are entitled to exceptional priveleges.

@@dennishickey7194 Those are all good points I will agree with you on. There's definitely a 2-tier justice system and suspending habeas corpus in the event of domestic emergencies is a slippery slope. Nixon asserted,"When a President does it, that means it's legal." Reagan made good on his threat to defy the Congress' power of advice and consent in foreign policy, striking a deal with Osama bin Laden( !) in the Iran/ Contra affair. Trump claimed "I can do anything I want! Article 2 lets me." His cult obviously agrees.

So ..In essence LINCOLN was being a hypocrite. As the war between the states DID NOT DERIVE OUT OF SLAVERY. RATHER ECONOMIC TRADE AND STATES RIGHTS. THE NORTH was embarking on the industrial revolution and saw the richness of the resources from the South. The North and the elite beaurocrats wanted to seize and dominate ALL AGRICULTURAL PRODUCTUON. BUT this was NOT a popular opinion among most of the American citizens. Including politicians.. SO LINCOLN ( being advised ) chose to appeal to the emotional side of NOT ONLY AMERICA .BUT OF ITS ALLIES. LINCOLN chose to make SLAVERY an issue. Which actually worked and gained support . Though LINCOLN himself was reluctant and sympathetic to both points of view. As it was already being considered and talked about among the South . Of ending the use of slave labour in favor of the more productive industrial machine . The steam powered tractor and the Cotton Gin along with other industrial innovations were quickly making slave labour obsolete. The south saw this. It was not the issue of Slave labour that started the Civil War. Yet it became the issue to ending it. LINCOLN knew that his only chance at re election would be the EMOTIONS OF THE PEOPLE TOWARD SLAVERY. Even though many northern people held indentured servants ( slaves ) themselves . Thus SLAVERY became the NORTHS new reason for defeating the South and then and only then did LINCOLN not only get re elected. But gained the support of other countries once sympathetic to the south. Now torn between loyalty to southern economic and trade rights and the issue of SLAVERY. The South lost their support. Soon the South lost most of its trade and supplies from sea ports and embargoes. The SOUTH who once was dominating and close to winning the war. Became weakened . Weakened buy lack of military arms support. Medicines and food . General LONGSTREET. was said to have suggested. That perhaps the South should have freed the SLAVES first . Then attacked the Yankees. Perhaps so.
