I stand by the fact that the “cis is a slur” crowd think this way, is because to them “trans” is a slur. They see being trans as so utterly negative that “well if cis is the opposite of trans it MUST be negative”
i gotta agree with moose, most of these people had never heard the term until "the trans debate" started with JK's tweets. so they just associate it with trans people. good hypothesis, but it's way to nuanced for the phobes.
They super resent not being able to call themselves "normal". They hate that so much. I had the same reaction from someone when I used the word "omnivore" when talking about vegan issues. Like dude, it's not derogatory just because there is a specific word instead of getting to say "I'm the Normal Person here".
Actually, there might be something more going on here. Sometimes, trans people do in fact say things like "well of course you'd say that, you're cis" or "ugh my parents are too cis to understand" and like, in these cases "cis" does in fact have a negative connotation. Doesn't make it a slur though. Just like "reverse racism" doesn't exist. But it is still stereotyping, because not all cis people by far act that way, and I firmly believe all stereotyping is harmful to all parties involved, including transphobes, allies, and trans people. EDIT: because everyone keeps not reading the rest of the thread, here is a later reply of mine: [...] It's about tone I guess. If you say it with contempt in your voice, that communicates that you have certain opinions towards a privileged group. And they don't like being reminded of their privilege. (which also ties in with the "im not cis, im normal" thing) And, if you only ever hear it in that way (which, let's remind ourselves that trans issues are barely present in most cis people's lives, so it is fully possible you'd only ever hear it in a context like that) then you might, reasonably even, conclude that it is _always_ used negatively, and hence it has a negative connotation, and hence it is a slur. Now, towards allies, this contempt feels unwarranted. They didn't choose to be privileged just like we didn't choose not to be, and they are trying their best to help. Which means "yelling at them because they are privileged so they always deserve it" (which I have heard some trans people say before) is never going to help the situation, unless they have _very good_ emotional control.
crazy how transphobes get so particular with etymology when it comes to the word "transphobia" but then lose all that when the word "cis" is said almost as if logic is a secondary priority to them and the top priority is being a horrible person edit: i'd like to thank Kate Wick for volunteering as a demonstration in the reply section of this very comment :)
But see, it's actually just that by rejecting the cis prefix, they're rejecting the concept of trans people. Which is completely different from, and not at all similar to transphobia.
It's so telling because they just have this primal instinct to attack the moment anyone says they are trans. But they also can't imagine someone being trans and not being able to "clock" them, so they assume Jamie is a trans woman who hasn't started any kind of affirming care ... The same way on Twitter for example they see me defending trans rights, I have a cartoony avatar and pronouns in my bio .... So they immediately assume I'm trans and start misgendering me thinking I'll be upset. Like I'm a cis man and I'm not even going to blink when they misgender me I think it's just funny for how pathetic it is.
one of the best parts of being multigender, messing with transphobes who desperately want to offend someone, especially if they don't understand the concept yet. the only way to win is to not play (or just have good intentions)

I am VERY upset with Jamie! 😠😠😠😠 ...because he knew from a young age that he was a boy. I'm joking of course, but I'm lowkey kinda jealous of trans folk that are so confident in it and don't question what they are.
Jamie is the one who broke me out of my transphobia (I'm 57 and just "didn't get it"). Once I found him and watched a bunch of his videos it actually clicked in my head that trans people are just people like everyone else just trying to live their best lives, honestly and happily. You simply can't fault anyone for that unless you yourself have issues. WHY anyone's life who is not you should bother you is beyond me at this point. Live and let live and leave everyone else alone, worry about your own business.
He seriously gives off such cool art teacher vibes. Like jes the teacher you'd remember years after you left high school for being one of the few bright spots in that hellhole.
I grew up in a very conservative Christian household, and was homophobic and transphobic until I was about 18, when I broke away from all that. Even after I started being an ally, I still felt like trans people were weird and I had trouble seeing them as their real gender. About two years ago I started watching your videos to better educate myself, and your whole personality and appearance so reminded me of my older brother, that I finally acknowledged the truth. And a few months ago, I realized that I myself am not cis. So thank you Jamie, for helping me become more open-minded about the journeys of others, and ultimately myself.
Bro went through a character arc. And honestly, I was the same at one point due to all my (now former) friends being homophobic and transphobic. Because they were my only friends, I thought it would be cool to be like them. Thankfully, my attitude has changed, and I regret my past.
I hope your transition process, whatever it may be (social, medical, etc...) is going well. I'm glad you were able to escape those bigoted beliefs your family passed down

I never understand how people say that trans folks push other people to be trans.... Why would I wish for anyone else to experience all the troubles that come with feeling like you were born in the wrong body? If I could choose, I'd pick being cis every day... but that's not how it works, unfortunately.
@gloriaf6971 they still say this bout gay people. This straight couple was practically having sex in the pool (they were grinding, moaning and eating eachothers face ) but the moment I touched my wife's waist and kissed her for less than a second and a lady loudly complained about "f@gs throwing in their face our faces" but just stays silent about the straight couple
We don’t cause people to become trans , we inform people they actually have a choice to be themselves. They also see us living our best life and they are jealous

I've decided that I want to go into law specifically to help LGBTQIA+ individuals and fight gender affirming care bans, unconstitutional trials such as the recent web designer case, and help as much as I can to make LGBTQIA+ equality something that isn't just a dream. I want Pride to be a celebration of a war we won, not just a fight. Let it be history and not a reminder of what we might go back to. Fight bigotry with education

Fun fact: Where I live, intentionally misgendering someone repeatedly might be considered harassment soon, depending on if the new law goes all the way through! I'm hoping it does, it pretty clearly states that to be considered harassment, it would have to be done with the intent to make people feel uncomfortable or afraid, which means you gotta question what's wrong with the people opposing it.
I've looked this up and this seems to be false. It sounds like writing media was spreading this claim to fearmonger. From what I read, Michigan law makes it harassment to intimidate people based on certain characteristics, and the new bill would add gender identity among other things to those characteristics. So not so much misgendering someone, but perhaps misgendering someone as a means to intimidate could become harassment.

The people who think "cis is a slur" are the ones TAKING it as a slur when it's used on them. "I'm not cis I'm normal!!" being cis IS normal and so is being trans - you're okay buddy
Well, even innocent words can be considered a slur if they are often used in pejorative way. The N-word was a common word but since it was usually accompanied with distain, it become a slur.
@@Karak-_- the N word has always been used negatively because it dates back to before slavery was abolished. It has always been used to identify people of African decent or with dark skintones as lesser beings. It has always had a history rooted in centuries of hatred and racism, and continues today unless reclaimed. The comparison of racial slurs and a term that simply means “not trans” doesn’t make sense because cisgender isn’t used in a negative connotation unless its to point out the lack of understanding cisgender people have of how transitioning works. Secondly, the term is fairly new and has never been used to personally attack a marginalized group of people so it’s not comparable to a slur. You act as if trans people look down on others for being cisgender when the reality of the situation is that it’s often used just to correct misunderstandings or as a completely benign adjective.

@unintent no one is telling kids that they're trans. Trans kids are coming to adults that make them feel safe with their identities. And what's the worst that can happen as a kid? They socially transition, realize that's not them, and then go back. But that's super rare and most de-transitioners do it out of social pressure, not the other way around
@@unintent giving information to questions is about giving clarity not confusion. Not discussing things in life doesn't make them magically go away. Giving information isn't indoctrination unlike church which is.
@@unintent But what if they ARE trans? What if when they get older, they realize they would be happier living as a gender different from the one they were assigned at birth? Learning that being trans is an option when they're young would save them a lot of pain later on in life. We're not trying to push anything on anyone, the most we're doing is telling people that it's possible to be trans, or _suggesting_ for someone to explore their gender more if they're expressing feelings that many trans people felt before they realized they were trans. And if you meet a trans person who is actually trying to push things on others, they're an exception. 99% of trans people would not approve of their actions. Telling kids that it's possible for a man to love another man like mommies and daddies love each other doesn't make them gay, but it does let them know that it's possible to be gay and _could_ make figuring themselves out a lot easier later on in life. And if they don't turn out to be gay, it would make them more accepting and understanding when they meet a gay person. And it's the same with trans people, telling kids that someone can be trans doesn't turn them trans. It only gives them information that _could_ save them a lot of pain later in life.

I've always loved the transphobes who try to argue "don't change words". Language has been changing since its conception and continues to evolve. Also, "cis" and "trans" are pretty basic chemistry terms that contemporary science uses to describe compounds in the same way its used to describe gender. Not that that matters to these people. They want to be mad. Edit: My "I paused to make this point that you made 2 seconds later" is showing. lol

When they coined the term transsexual in the 40s I don't think they realized how many of us were out there so they didn't feel the need to at the same time coin the term for a non trans person Edit: like allistic came way after autistic! Able bodied came way after disabled!

Hey me too! I am absolutely confused. On one hand by the amount of meaningless tautologies in this video, and on the other hand about myself. I mostly have gathered stuff I am certain that I am NOT. :D
I heard about a Christian lady who prays every day and has a strong sense of belief in her religion LEAVE church because she saw the transphobia sparking among Christianity, saying that god she knows is not so narrow-minded and now practices her religion in her home. This was such a breath of fresh air to hear about.
3:16 can confirm, I'm non binary and am frequently utterly confused. Usually by transphobe logic and whatever those people in "that's not how women/men work" videos are thinking. 7:45 I agree completely with your response but hey, they see you as a man and are trying to insult you as a man by calling you feminine. Misogynistic, yes. Weirdly affirming of your gender, also yes. (For clarity since this is the internet, using feminine as an insult is misogynistic. Using it as an insult to Jamie affirms his manhood because that's the kind of insult one hurls at a man.)
I 100% guarantee that every transphobe that comments about phobia = fear has been told repeatedly, and shown the dictionary definition, of what it actually means. But they still love to trot out that old tired nugget again and again.
(I may be wrong here, take it with a grain of salt) I've literally only heard the "phobia is a strong fear" argument in regards to LGBTQ+ identities. Never in regards to words like xenophobia or Islamophobia. Hmm, weird.
never understood how people say trans people are different from cis people. We are all different. Even twins looking alike will somehow have a difference. Nobody is exactly like someone else. Why would a different sex or gender be a bigger difference than, i dont know, a skill or a hobby?? Gosh transphobes really try to hate something
This is a take I haven't seen but I like it. I use a similar argument when addressing people who don't believe trans people exist. It goes like this: Do you realize everyone's face is different? No two people look the same because the human race is incredibly diverse. Why would you expect variations in sex and gender to not also be commonplace?
I'm different as a trans person the same way I'm different as an autistic person. It causes me some distress and struggle, but some changes can greatly improve my general wellbeing. And both ways, although it causes me some discomfort and some people think it needs to be fixed, there's no way to get rid of it and it doesn't need to be "cured". I really hope that allegory worked, I kinda suck at explanations.
One thing that every single living thing in the world has in common is that we are all different. So why hate someone over one thing we all have in common?
Hello mate, cis bloke in his 60s here, and may I say that I thought by this stage of the game that people would be a bit more tolerant and groovy, however it appears the culture has been in reverse for a few years.... OMG A PERSON OF IMPRESSIVE AGE (my nice way of saying old) THAT IS LGBTQ SUPPORTIVE!!! You guys are so rare, and it always warms my heart as a 15yo trans girl to see you!
People who argue that "you can't just change what words mean" must not have ever spoken to anyone ever. That's like, the single most predictable feature of language: it changes. You can actually plot it on maps and timelines and PREDICT future changes based on when and where different people, places, things, and ideas enter the zeitgeist.
They don’t understand basic language. Countries have different meanings for different words. In Australia, an “eraser” is called a “rubber” (because you use it to rub stuff out and it’s made of rubber.)
I'll never understand people who use religion against trans people. I am a christian myself and we've talked about this in my house: we believe God made man and woman, yes, but in no place it says "you must behave and identify as what your genitalia defines even if it makes you unhappy." God is love and loves all of us equal, he wants us to be happy and love ourselves and the other, why are people so focused on using it to hurt?
@@kjlat exactly! My church adapts to the modern times but keeping the values which are the most important thing. We don't selectively ignore things and keep things to conveniently hate (for example) gay people. There are gay people at my church and we believe God loves them too and wants them to be happy. Love is love, and God sees the heart and soul, not what YOU HAVE BETWEEN YOUR LEGS. The whole point is that the body is temporary
Christianity began as sun worship, the stories about Jesus are symbolic. He is just a personification of the sun, made into a god figure later on. The sun "dies" for 3 days on December 22nd, the winter solstice, when it stops its movement south, to be born again or resurrected on December 25th, when it resumes its movement north. In some areas, the calendar originally began in the constellation of Virgo, and the sun would therefore be "born of a Virgin" The sun rising in the morning is "the saviour of mankind" The sun is "The light of the World" The sun "walks on water" is just the reflection of the sun on water/the sea. "He cometh on clouds, and every eye shall see him", is just sun rays. Jesus' "crown of thorns" is just the sun's glare, also know as a halo. The sun's "followers", "helpers" or "disciples" are the 12 months and the 12 signs of the zodiac or constellations, through which the sun must pass. The sun at 12 noon is in the house or temple of the "Most High": thus.."he" begins "his Father's work" at "age" 12. The sun enters into each sign of the zodiac at 30 degrees, hense, the "Sun of God" begins his ministry at "age" 30. The sun is hung on a cross or "crucified", which represents its passing through the equinoxes. The vernal equinox being Easter, at which time it is then resurrected. The reason why saviour myths are so similar with a godman who is crucified and resurrected, who does miracles and has 12 disciples, is that these stories were based on the movements of the sun through the heavens, an astrotheological development that can be found throughout the planet, because the sun and the 12 zodiac signs can be observed around the globe. In other words, Jesus Christ and all the others upon whom this character is predicated are personifications of the sun, and the Gospel fable is merely a rehash of a mythological formula revolving around the movements of the sun throug the heavens. Christianity is ancient astrology, it's just fables about the sun. Check out Acharya S aka D.M Murdock for more info. .. ....
I'm also pretty sure that it doesn't say "god *only* made a man and a woman". Maybe they had a nap for a few weeks before making non-binary and intersex people. Or maybe there *were* originally just cis men and cis women, but somewhere along the way mutations happened so gender and sex variations appeared. It's also well documented that some books were discarded when the original bible was collated, plus some of the books have different accounts of the same event (and I imagine other religious texts have similar histories). So we know that it can't possibly cover every event and scenario completely accurately with all details included (and that's before even considering all the numerous translations and amendments over the years). So basically, no-one should use their personal beliefs as an excuse for hatred or discrimination, *especially* when those beliefs advocate for love and acceptance.
It's just weird, creepy, and invasive to ask random people about their junk. Trans or cis. Unless they're your doctor, what do they expect to do with that information anyway?
Hating someone because they are not a carbon copy of yourself or doesn't conform to what you feel is "normal" is asinine, those haters need to take a deep look inside. Jamie is one of the sweetest people I've never met (but would love to!!) hating him is beyond...well just beyond! 😠
It comes with dealing with transphobia on a daily basis. After a while it becomes more like water rolling off a ducks back. Though sadly some of us don't make it that far. That's why older trans people and ally's need to stand up for trans kids. So we don't lose anybody along the way.

I mean, generally, laughing at hate is one of the best ways to deal with it. Because if they had valid points, they wouldn't need to resort to hate. Also one of the things Jammi said make me think. We have masculinity, femininity, and toxic masculinity... but has anyone ever seen any toxic femininity?
Yes. Think of any beliefs that are sexist. If a feminine person internalizes those beliefs proudly and claims that it's natural, that's toxic femininity. Seeing yourself as a fertility goddess whose sole purpose is to breed and submit to your husband (yes these women really exist), believing you're naturally bad at math and science and shaming other women who show interest in it (this happened to me multiple times), claiming it's the man's job to carry anything mildly heavy when you could easily carry it yourself, shaming men who don't hold the door for you (usually online rather than to their face), etc. Toxic masculinity and toxic femininity are just sexism internalized into how we perform gender.
So much of it. I’ve experienced it mostly when I was religious, but there’s also the whole attitude of “well I had to deal with misogyny when I was coming up in this industry, and if you don’t then you’re weak and don’t deserve to be in this field.” Internalized misogyny is a vicious beast.
Yes. Female circumsion is a thing. Normally promoted and performed on girls by their mothers and aunts. One a personal level - I was in college and was told I (cis-woman, btw) wasn't 'woman' enough to be a feminist. Because, you know... being a feminist has gender requirements, evidently. Yesterday I was listening to my neighbour rant for hours about "trans rights" and "lgbt ***" and I had such an urge to just come out and yell at him. It was like an internet troll, just outside of my window. I am personally a cis ace but most of my friends are gay and/or under trans umbrella so I have a pretty zoomed view on what the struggle in this country is.. and hearing that man was just pissing me off so much.

3:18 as a non binary, I can confirm, I am very confused. About a lot of things, like, for example, why do transphobes exist? What was the person's comment supposed to achieve? How does one do geometry? Why did they make that last Star Wars movie so crap? I have no clue! :D
The "I'm a transgender man" in the intro just really made me laugh, I didn't realise that myself until he directly referenced it when I started watching his videos - must've been the 3rd or 4th I was watching and I was just like "oh, really?" lol
Transphobes: "Don't call me transphobic, I'm not afraid of you, it isn't even proper grammar." Me (literally a few minutes later): "So you are a cis person..." Transphobes: "Ew, don't call me that!" Me *eyeroll* : "I thought you cared about grammar."
I adore you. I also tried to buy your book and was completely unsuccessful. Thankfully, I have children in their 30's who can help me. I was able to read quite a bit of your book. It's wonderful, Jamie! I'll get my kids working on this so I can finish it. Thank you!
I’m confused, why are people mad at a bunch of adjectives and pronouns? Did they fail to English? Why are they mad at trans people and not their English teachers, or themselves? Unless the teacher was trans or they are trans; then why are they mad about their own community?
That's fascism for you. Fascists hate knowledge and science, so they hate language. They try to simplify to the maximum a language (Known as "newspeak".) so that people don't have anything to descrive themselves and the others. Without being able to descrive people, knowledge of them became unobtainable. Without knowing people, people stop being people and became things. Dehumanization of themselves and the others allow fascists to commit atrocities, to not only to others but also to themselves, because there is no atrocity if there is no people being affected.
I'm also a trans guy who talks with his hands a lot...but I'm also AUTISTIC so it helps me talk, if I didn’t use my hands I wouldn't be able to talk well since I have a hard time staying still and not stimming for even 2 minutes...but I know CIS guys (autistic and neurotypical) who also talk with their hands! It's not just a "feminine" thing, some people literally need to do it because it helps them talk, and others just do it because it's just how they talk 😅

I stand by the fact that the “cis is a slur” crowd think this way, is because to them “trans” is a slur. They see being trans as so utterly negative that “well if cis is the opposite of trans it MUST be negative”
That still don't logic 😂
the opposite of bad is bad. consistent with the rest of what they say tbf
i gotta agree with moose, most of these people had never heard the term until "the trans debate" started with JK's tweets. so they just associate it with trans people. good hypothesis, but it's way to nuanced for the phobes.
EDIT: because everyone keeps not reading the rest of the thread, here is a later reply of mine:
[...] It's about tone I guess.

It only gives them information that _could_ save them a lot of pain later in life.

it's repulsion. You have hydrophobic matter and hydrophilic matter. Sounds like a perfect example of understanding what phobia is
I 100% guarantee that every transphobe that comments about phobia = fear has been told repeatedly, and shown the dictionary definition, of what it actually means. But they still love to trot out that old tired nugget again and again.
I think the 'phobes just don't want to admit they fear LGBTQ+ folk, as well as hating us. They're just weak and afraid of anything unfamiliar.
i've witnessed it many times in these here comments.
Bigotry is an emotional attachment to ignorance
I'm old enough to remember when they tried that with homophobia. Maybe we'll get some more of that again too
(I may be wrong here, take it with a grain of salt) I've literally only heard the "phobia is a strong fear" argument in regards to LGBTQ+ identities.
It goes like this:
Do you realize everyone's face is different?
Personally I'm happy for people to be who they are, and maybe in time we can forget all that bigoted nonsense. Big dad hugs all round ❤

Sis male made me think of James Charles 💀
People who argue that "you can't just change what words mean" must not have ever spoken to anyone ever. That's like, the single most predictable feature of language: it changes. You can actually plot it on maps and timelines and PREDICT future changes based on when and where different people, places, things, and ideas enter the zeitgeist.
Radical says hello and one of its hellos is a surfer dude slang, like "cool" is. lmao
They don’t understand basic language. Countries have different meanings for different words. In Australia, an “eraser” is called a “rubber” (because you use it to rub stuff out and it’s made of rubber.)
Or how a lot of American English drops the 'u' in a lot of words that use 'ou' like in color/colour
This, so much this
I'll never understand people who use religion against trans people.
Because they don’t actually care about Christianity. They only use it as a weapon.
Isn't Christianity all about like "we all love each other" but then people make up a bunch of stupid exceptions to fit their ancient views.
In some areas, the calendar originally began in the constellation of Virgo, and the sun would therefore be "born of a Virgin"
The sun rising in the morning is "the saviour of mankind"
The sun is "The light of the World"
The sun "walks on water" is just the reflection of the sun on water/the sea.

In really simple terms, a non-binary person is someone who does not identify as exclusively a man or a woman.
I'm pretty sure there are many people, including myself, who don't identify as a man or a woman. Therefore we are Nonbinary and do exist.
So yes there are people that don't identify as a man/woman therefore being Nonbinary does exist. It's really a simple concept to grasp that some people don't identify as a man or woman. my enby friend came to me some days ago and told me that they get dysphoria from tucking in shirts and they said that maybe i, a transfemme might find some euphoria with tucking in my shirts, especially with high wasted pants and sure enough it felt amazing to tuck in my shirt with my high waisted pants. so if you’re a trans person or just anyone really and is ever in need of some gender affirming clothing techniques, just ask your trans friend about their dysphoria and it might become your euphoria :)
this doesn’t have much to do with transphobes and the video but i thought it may be helpful to some people ^ ^
Thank you for this. I'm enby and have always hated tucking in shirts and never associated it with dysphoria. I just recently got a better therapist who's actually helping me process my transition instead of gaslighting me, and gosh is it weird looking back and realizing how many "quirks" I've had all my life were actually about gender dysphoria. I love when transphobes tell trans men "you'll never be a woman".
me to.
If you look up ‘phobia’ the meaning says it’s a fear or aversion to something. So those people would see that phobia isn’t just being scared of something if they literally just spent 3 seconds googling the meaning of one word.
Google is the bigots worse enemy 💀
But then they'd have to actually educate themselves on something. That's too difficult for them.
Aaaa scary gay and trans people !!! !👻👻👻
Remember, anything that doesn't agree with what they already believe is clearly 'woke nonsense' they wrote because they were afraid of being cancelled.
These people only read untill they see whatever will justify their position then they stop right there. We need the definition changed to "aversion or fear" so they don't just stop at the first word.
I actually REALLY needed this today! I posted a reel about neopronouns yesterday, and I have been called mentally ill so many times today. Like SO many times.

People who complain about neopronouns hail from bathsalts county, I swear. It's not even like it's new, that stuff was around in pre-Strikethrough LiveJournal days, and I know that in Trekkie fandom it was even OLDER I remember xhe/xir and zie/zir dating back to freaking _1998_ and that itself took from physical zines and scifi lexicons that predated it...
We've HAD the neopronouns for almost half a century at LEAST (and I mean in like... fandom spaces, that's the corner of the world I'm aware of), we've only relatively recently started being more exploratory about it, but it isn't even something to fight over.

I definitely have, I feel like the “tradwife” thing could apply here.
So much of it. I’ve experienced it mostly when I was religious, but there’s also the whole attitude of “well I had to deal with misogyny when I was coming up in this industry, and if you don’t then you’re weak and don’t deserve to be in this field.” Internalized misogyny is a vicious beast.
I'm thinking Stepford Wifes, Handmaid's Tale. Possible choices.
Yes. Female circumsion is a thing. Normally promoted and performed on girls by their mothers and aunts.
One a personal level - I was in college and was told I (cis-woman, btw) wasn't 'woman' enough to be a feminist. Because, you know... being a feminist has gender requirements, evidently. I'm pretty ure these are the same women now trying to sexually assault other women to "prove" they have the "right" to use a bathroom.
