Level out the back yard, get some tarps and run the hose before a cold spell and an inch and 1/2 of water gets you a frozen pond in a day or two. Just run the hose in increments as each layer freezes as you add layers as it will freeze quicker. Buy used skates on e-bay or such. Don't have a back yard? One of your kid's friends who loves hockey will volunteer his backyard. Live in the city? Good luck.
@Lawrence Ehrbar umm sure if you live on a farm or have the yard to do that but my point is.... wanna play hockey? 300 a month Ice bill on top of equipment every year plus time off. Wanna play more then 2 years? Awesome now anyone can get on a travel team bc its all about money so your ice bill goes up and you need travel gear plus travel expenses. A few friends of mine have kids that started travel way before they should have bc its all a scam now and pay 600 a month before travel expenses. If you have a grand laying around every month you're the few.

A lenghth of about 120 feet should be plenty. I am from Long Island and just about every neighborhood has a few old houses with large backyards scattered even among the newer 1970's+ developments. How do you think most Canadians learned how to play?
