  • This is the Sovereign Nation of The Republic of Iraq, which is a legal country. Kurdistan is a roughly defined geo-cultural territory known as an "Autonomous Region", not a legally recognized Sovereign Nation. For all intense and purposes, as well as provision of factional information, I visited The Republic of Iraq, as what my passport stamp states.
** UPDATE 12/6/2017: If you post any mean, rude, constructive, harassing comments, or are looking to start an online war over politics, you will be immediately BLOCKED and your comment will be deleted by my team. There is absolutely ZERO ROOM FOR HATE or negativity on my channel. Thank you for understanding. **
This video is my own personal experience in that I had in Erbil, Iraq and only Erbil. I did not travel around anywhere else in Iraq and can not speak for other places. But from my knowledge and research, Erbil is one of the most peaceful cities within Iraq and varies greatly in culture due to the Kurdistan way of life and government, which they're very proud of. Please take this video as an educational experience about another city in Iraq aside from the ones we see/hear on the news every day. Political or negative comments will not be welcome. Just enjoy :)

I would like to see Iraq. I've pretty much considered it too dangerous. As a Caucasian (that is, my ancestors are from the Caucasus Mountains, I believe, though I'm American) I'd like to see people from the Middle East. As someone said, I'd like to see Babylon and the people, taste the food. Cradle of Ancient Civilization!!! It's biblical too!

Hi ! i really like you and your vlogs! but you have to visit Kurdistan again. I'd like to give you a better tour around and show you the history behind the kurdish culture. We are not Arabs and we have other religions then only Islam this is the autonomous part of Iraq, where we have our own government and bounds.

Fascinating, thank you! Erbil looks very pleasant indeed.
My daughter spent 9/14-8/15 in the Palestinian West Bank as the year abroad element of her Arabic & Anthropology degree, and I visited her twice. All in all a very positive and enriching experience, so between the two of us we have some perspective on the notion of single female travellers in the Middle East.

The facto is speaking, we live in our country and our land is under the occupation of the Persian-Turkish Arab enemy. We broke the nose of Hulaku in Arbil Castle. We are the grandchildren of Medea and Salaheddin. We love the challenge. This Kurdistan is the land of heroes. Those who come to us welcome them even if they are hateful, but this is one of the goodness of our souls and of the generosity towards our guest, but the kurdistan and the homeland are a red line. Was your travel insurance valid when you went to Kurdistan? Or did you go uncovered?
You're rather overselling your recommendation for female solo travellers (as well as anyone else, for that matter) to go anywhere in Iraq, and it's highly irresponsible of you.
The UK government has advised all UK citizens/residents against all but essential travel to Iraq, including Erbil, for a number of years now. Some zones are even advised as no-go whatsoever. Why do you think that is?
Are you from the US? What was the official advice from your country regarding visiting Iraq at the time you went?

    • @CassieDePecol
      @CassieDePecol  5 років тому +3

Scruffy O The US government and the media instills fear in all of us when it comes to many countries around the world, including Iraq. I imagine the UK government and many others are the same. For you to call me irresponsible to talk about positive aspects of Iraq and my good experience as a solo female traveler, is very uneducated. What you fail to discuss are statistics. What are the chances of a person getting and dying of, cancer, in their lives? What are the chances of a person getting in or dying in a car accident in their lives? What are the chances of a person dying from a terrorist-related event during their visit to Iraq? What are the chances of a student, teacher, parent or visitor getting massacred at a regular elementary, middle school, high school, or college in the United States of America? Sandy Hook elementary school is a 15 minute drive from my hometown, and look what happened. Death and fear exists everywhere, and the governments and media outlets will always continue to instill fear in us from warning us to travel to certain places.
By acknowledging the statistics of what can happen by traveling to a country like Iraq, in addition to the statistics of personal harm that can be made by simply walking empty streets alone in Los Angeles or NYC at night, for example, driving 45 minutes to work, or being birthed by parents who either themselves had/have cancer, we face risk of death.
You, like many others, are consumed by the fear of living. Too many aspects of life are scary to most people, so they would rather be confined to their hometown drinking celery juice and never veering to explore the world we live in before their life inevitably ends. People have a problem accepting death and therefore live in fear.
There are millions of kind and innocent people who live in Iraq and live satisfactory, and great lives. I would not ever tell a woman or man for that matter, not to travel to a country where millions of people thrive, based on a US government warning or negative media article. Women and men have been safely traveling to Iraq for decades, and Erbil in particular, is one of the safest places to visit in the Middle East. It’s relatively peaceful compared to the rest of Iraq.
Perhaps next time I’d recommend digging a little deeper into your research of travel, and solo female travel, in specific, to realize the facts of traveling to these places and how much of a risk it actually isn’t. I don’t condone name calling - especially from someone who’s never attempted to step foot in a place to learn for themselves. I’m the least irresponsible person you’ll ever come across and have helped hundreds of thousands of women and men, around the world, to act on their pursuits of seeing the world with an open mind. At the end of the day though, I’m not their mother or caretaker, and it is up to every individual to take the necessary precautions when they travel to Erbil, as they do when entering New York City.
I wish you the best in your endeavors, and I hope you have the opportunity to visit Iraq someday.

Aknan Mohammed Kurdistan is not a Sovereign Nation, it is an autonomous region located within the Sovereign Nation of Iraq. For the purpose of the Guinness World Record and legal technicalities, Kurdistan exists within Iraq, and my passport stamp read “Iraq”, so, I visited Iraq.

Kurdistan hasn't been completely free of ISIS-related violence, though. I recall ISIS attacking Kirkuk two or three months ago. But you're right that Kurdistan is far, far safer than the rest of Iraq, and highly functional as a civil society.

Interviewing in Erbil is easy. But you need to be in pairs, preferably male + female. This isn't the US. Take turns to film / interview. Edit + upload to your cloud the same day. Never wander through those bazars alone. You won't come out "untouched".

Although it would be nice if the flag at the end of the video would be changed to the Iraqi flag - Erbil is in Iraq. Overall, great content, hopefully you could cover it more in the future.
