Looking forward to this video as yet one more way to ruin my life. Your S&T method and lessons have made such a tremendous difference in my game that I went from almost quitting the game to spending all my time on the range or on the course. I am 76 years young and went from shooting in the mid 90s to low to mid 80s after about 2 months on my home course. Amazing! However, my wife complains that all I think about, talk about, and do now is golf. Even the dog is pissed.
that's so awesome! I'm teaching my dad to golf with the snt and he's 65, lots of time to improve! ps, my dog get's the most upset too, I have to leave him inside or he barks at me!
When I heard Tom say put weight on your front foot I said to myself, "What is this hippie talking bout?" But I still gave it a try. It works!! I've been blasting the hell out of my 5 wood! Haven't tried the 3 wood on the course yet. I also so his video on swinging around the body. I tried that too and I've added 20 yards to every club! I still come over the top a little. Just can't shake that habit yet, but at this point who cares. It goes straight with a little draw & I'm flirting with breaking 80 now. THANK YOU TOM!!!!!! KEEP THE VIDEOS COMING BRO!!!!
Thanks for your kind words, Frank!! I'm very glad to learn of your success through this instruction, but more importantly I am THRILLED to know how much you are now enjoying yourself!! THAT is what this channel and my online school are really all about!! Thanks for sharing, and keep up the great work!! "The Hippie" 😆😆

One of the greatest golf videos on the net. I think if one can hit a 3 wood off the deck cleanly then most likely their contact is solid through their bag. IMHO MH
Awesome!! I'm very glad to know that this lesson resonated with you; excellent job incorporating it into your swing and putting it into play!! This lesson was pure gold to me, Tom. Shifting my weight slightly left at address and swinging "through the middle of the back" were the two critical things that I took the range and I experienced a drastic improvement in my ball striking in just a few minutes. I used the "weight forward" setup for my long irons and it worked beautifully for those clubs, too. Thanks so much!
That's fabulous, Tim! Great job incorporating this lesson into your swing so quickly; I look forward to hearing about how it goes when you take it out onto the course! Thanks very much for sharing!! Tom
This and a few other people's fairway wood video helped a lot!! I tested a 3 wood shot off the deck yesterday, I had not done it in awhile and topped it. Your video showed me why. Today I went to the range and kept my weight on the left side, kept the ball a little closer to center, made a shallow swing around my body back down (instead of a vertical takeaway with steep downswing, then started the downswing slower and focused on trying to hit down on it slightly to scrape the grass an inch in front of the ball. It worked IMMEDIATELY! I hit several very far and straight, no topping at all. It was easy with proper setup and swing plane.
Awesome, @DJ-Flights! Great job incorporating this lesson into your swing. Sounds like you're on the proper track with your 3 wood now!! Thanks for sharing your success with this! Tom
Love the Payne Stewart look Bro.. Your point the left shoulder at the ball video has made a huge difference in my game.. only hit one bucket then played with my buddy that always out drove me and he was away on 7 out of 9 drives.. We play on a true links course so you just can’t grip and rip on every par 4 and 5.. My biggest problem is adjusting to my new distances.. Great problem to have.. Thanks Bro you have changed my golf game forever 👍👍✌️
That’s fantastic, Johnny - I bet your friend didn’t know what hit him!!! About that distance thing - yeah, you’ll eventually get used to it ...😂😂😂 Thanks for sharing your success and keep up the great work!! @@SagutoGolf Tom I am hitting the ball farther and way more crispy 🍗 at 58 than I have in my life.. I played in High school but hung my clubs up for 20 years because I had kids.. Only played about 5 times during that time when Daddy would invite my 2 brothers and I to play in a 4 man best ball.. but I missed the game.. been playing since 2012 wondering every round why I never got any better.. You changed my game forever and I will always be thankful to You for that.. If I could ask one favor,, could you teach me how to swing like Freddy Couples??😂 I will wear knickers when I get into a single digit handicap but then again Daddy always said if you can’t out play em out Dress em.. in all seriousness thank You very much Tom👍✌️

Hey Tom, I was hitting 3w today on the range. I was killing it. I was coming in shallow but I found it was important to keep my left side and head from swaying. Keep those lessons coming!!!!
Your teaching style (though not the technique) reminds me of the early Wally Armstrong instructional videos. A lot of energy, clear explanations & good use of analogies & readily available training aids.

Just watched another method by another coach: talks about a right leaning spine tilt, weight shift beginning with loading right foot and then left, sweeping being a major error using fairway woods. In other words, almost the opposite of what is presented here. I’ve used Tom’s method with much better results and consistency. Funny how PGA coaches are not only not on the same page, they’re reading from different books. For the ameteaur, all you can do is grind it out on the range and course and choose what works for you-but again, this has worked better for me than the weight shift methods of other youtube coaches.
Sadly, Douglas, many misconstrued or misguided teachings of "conventional" instruction - such as shifting weight back and forth, lifting the club, turning into a firm trail side, actively roll the hands through impact, etc. - have relegated generations of golfers to the vast abyss of chronic frustration. We're doing our best to clear these up one by one and put an end to this madness, and I'm very glad to know that the instruction here is resonating well with you!! I am 69 years old and I just want to say Tom is the craziest instructor I have ever seen BUT laying aside his personality---which I really like--- this nut has me playing the best golf of my life! I shot a 74 at a tournament and had 2 double bogies and 2 bogies in the round. I have been playing golf for 20 years and never hit the ball as far as I hit it now. My 7 iron is 165 t0 170 yards and 30 yards farther than when I was 50! I just wish everyone except the guys I play with could learn from this guy! THANK YOU Tom, because of you, I am relieving these old coots of all their cash! LOL
That is *AWESOME* ,Tom Jenn! I am thrilled to learn of your success and I truly appreciate you sharing it here!! All I ask in return is this: After you've had enough fun accumulating all that cash from the old coots, *_PLEASE_* - send them my way so we can level the playing field just a little! @@SagutoGolf I can no longer feel comfortable with my old back and lift motion. That alone was worth the lesson. I am so stubborn to make changes but I see now this is a must. So much more to learn in future lessons! Thanks Tom!
Great stuff Tom, after your lesson I have been hitting driver with weight forward drill and as long as I back swing slow and keep weight forward I seem to be able to swing as hard as I want and the bloody thing stays fairly straight! That aside, those trousers are amazing!
Tom, Great lesson. Season finally just starting here in MN. Weight forward, stacked position with head not bobing and weaving like some middleweight champion, and hands back. An additional great hint I picked up from you on your lessons is trail shoulder back in throwing position at the top. I find this for me automatically keeps lead arm straight at top of backswing plus added bonus of more length and pop.
Yes, Tom - trail shoulder retraction as we get to the top is one of the power accumulators of the swing, and it will definitely help keep your radius intact! Have fun out there!! TS
you are a WIZ.. i am left handed and never played golf... now learning to play handicapped and killing it at the range, your videos are amazing i am learning and loving this sport. must say you have ver unorthodox ways of teaching ..it WORKS!
Great video, i was struggling with contact and have about 100MPH club head speed with 3W. Started taking the club more around my body like Hogan. Went from 220 yard carry to 240-250. Keep up the good work.

Tom Tom Tom... The way you teach is just phenomenal. You made golf fun for me again. I am 56 yrs old with chronic arthritis. Using your tips n methods I am steady in the mid 80's again. You have knocked 10 strokes off my score card in just 60 days. My friends have asked me wtf did I do. I told them it's Saguto Golf that gets the credit. Ty so much for bringing my love of the game back to me.
I just got my favorite go to for any time I wanna swing clean. Keeping my arms out in front of me. It keeps that nice wide arc and really loads up my front leg. Set my rogue to 8 degrees too and man oh man.
Thanks - I'm very glad to know that my instruction content and teaching style are resonating with you!! Well, all things being equal there's more clubhead speed because of the longer shaft, and since Momentum = Mass x Velocity it would therefore suggest that momentum increases with shaft length (note that I did not say "club length" because this would not apply to single-length irons). Having said all that, why does it really matter? It is essentially the same swing with every club; just some minor setup differences and naturally occurring shaft plane changes as we graduate up in club length from short irons to woods. To demonstrate, you'll find towards the end of this episode some practice range footage of me hitting a 7 iron, 3 wood, and driver: ua-cam.com/video/o0xscMyN3v8/v-deo.html So as long as you are properly executing the motion and your swing rhythm is good, "momentum" is simply something that happens naturally and nothing that we need to think about. I just can't help myself because I can see a great golf game hidden in there that pops out more and more regularly. I just have certain aggravating things that are killing it. Hopefully sagutogolf will help me get there!
Thanks for the kind words, Oliver - I'm glad you are enjoying my channel's instruction content! There are various causes of toe hits, with the most common being related to setup (for example, the arms are not hanging down naturally and are in fact slightly reaching away from the body at address) or a downswing path that is coming from the outside and across the ball, oftentimes due to insufficient lateral hip slide. I hope you will consider enrolling in the SagutoGolf online school as that is where the best opportunity for learning this swing resides. So I've been watching your videos and I'm very impressed. I've been doing stacking till for a couple years but with no real coaching just kind of learning I'm alone. Sounds like a good plan, Alex! The V1 Swing Video Analysis is an effective and inexpensive service that I highly recommend to everyone in the online school. I liken it to bringing your swing into the shop for a tune-up or minor repair. Scheduling one on a quarterly basis for preventive maintenance will do wonders for keeping things humming along nicely, and it's also a great tool for pinpointing and resolving any issues that arise. The process involves downloading the free V1 app and then submitting two videos to me through the app - one down-the-line (captured from your stance line, not the target line) and the other face-on. You'll find more information about the V1 Analysis halfway down this page on the Saguto.Golf site. With regard to the school itself, so many folks across the globe are now enjoying the best golf of their lives as a result. As an enrolled member you'll enjoy: - Unlimited access to comprehensive members-only systems for the full swing. - Short game courses: Chipping, Pitching, Bunker play, Putting. - Simplified, succinct, step-by-step lessons and drills designed to put you on the fast track towards learning everything in a well-organized, self-guided fashion. - Detailed troubleshooting diagnostic videos and fixes for a variety of common swing issues. - Power & Distance course. - Shot-Shaping Grid course. - Ball Flight Fixes course. - Indoor Training Program. - A Members' Forum where you can ask specific swing-related questions, interact with others in the SagutoGolf community, and suggest new content ideas. - Access to all exclusive paid UA-cam channel members-only content at no additional charge. - Discounted rate on my V1 Swing Video Analysis service. - Ongoing additions of new content. i want to say thank you first and foremost your video on back swing with making sure the head is out in front of hands and then looping back to hit from the bottom worked wonders on my driver . I was constantly slicing until i did this . Thank you thank you thank you Ninja master ! lol now when i was placing the weight over the left leg i was not shifting my hips 1 inch forward i just put more weight on my left leg . is that ok or should it just be shifted ? i also moved my right leg closer to shorten my stance im almost shoulder with apart fyi i have a very large shoulder with compared to arms . Im 5ft 6 with a 54 inch chest . i just started to put your videos to work today . Fyi i hit the driver into the trees at the back of the range 250 yards i could use more off the grass contact with ball positioning videos with different clubs . Thanks again
Vern - You can accomplish the weight forward in different ways, but whichever way you do it should be supportive of keeping the weight on the front side throughout the swing. Pushing the hips forward at address is one of the ways the Stack & Tilt book suggests for accomplishing this. Charlie Wi - a PGA Tour pro who is and excellent model for the S&T swing goes about it differently. He prefers to feel that his trail hip is higher than his lead hip; this pushes the weight forward as well while also presetting the hips on the steeper downward angle that is a component of this swing. Nice job bombing the driver!! Please see my reply to your other comment as I think my online school can help you quite a bit towards properly building this swing! Thanks, TS
Hi Tom, great videos !!! I would like to hear more from the guy that lives in the woods !!! I seem to hit the ball better when I hit a fade for some reason. I took this to the course today and smashed my fairway wood 230 yards to the fringe of the green, there was a four ball putting out on the green and they span around glaring at me! I instantly knew what they were thinking, I nodded at them, yes folks you're right...I did watch the SagutoGolf how to rip your fairway woods video this morning!
😆😆😆 Oopsie... I do believe I neglected to include the "Hazards of Insane Extra Distance" disclaimer and warning verbiage with this lesson... Apologies to the group in front, Chris!! @@joegarza1835 It's a long road & I was in your position 2 years ago, i'm now off 18, and shoot mid 80s - low 90s (but it really should be about 14 but my putting is atrocious!). Good luck with the journey Joe, if you put the effort in you absolutely will get there.
You're cool. I like your style. You explain things in a way that I understand. Was Ben Hogan a stack and tilt player? And what are the other styles called?
Actually, John, between you and me the hat is really a prop as it provides a fabulous visual for the tremendous speed and power generated by this swing!! 😆 Tom
Like most golfers - even those at the highest levels of the game - I have nuances that I try to resolve, but bottom line is that it performs well for me consistently, provides a predictable ball flight, and is easy on the body.
Hi Fabio, It is essentially the same swing with every club; just some minor setup differences and naturally occurring shaft plane changes as we graduate up in club length from short irons to woods. To demonstrate, you'll find towards the end of this episode some driving range footage of me hitting a 7 iron, 3 wood, and driver: ua-cam.com/video/o0xscMyN3v8/v-deo.html This is indeed a very body-friendly motion as supported by the fact that a significant percentage of my online school members are in their 60's, 70's, and 80's - i.e.: a smorgasbord of chronic ailments, physical limitations, back/shoulder/knee/hip pain, arthritis, and joint replacements - and they are overwhelmingly elated to experience the dramatic pain-free game improvement, seemingly effortless power, and resulting enjoyment that this swing affords them. It all begins with a proper setup which provides for a free-flowing motion. Upon that good foundation a repeatable swing which produces consistently crispy impact can be built. Have you looked into the comprehensive, structured, sequential learning platform of the online school yet? That's where - among many other courses and lessons covering various aspects of the game - you will find very detailed instruction and drills that take you through the entire swing step-by-step from setup to finish. I'm amazed you're able to have an entire driving range all to yourself. When I visit the driving range, I have to share the pasture with the other cows. 🤔
I know it's probably impossible to do by yourself, but I'd really like to see how you address the ball from your point of view. Maybe a GoPro on your head? Haha.
I hope not! The weight forward component along with the proper combination of tilting, turning, and extending are supposed to maintain the swing center and keep the head relatively still. TS
I've never heard you explain the weight shift as you did here..is this the same advice for all clubs (weight forward with your shift explanation) on all clubs? Thanks
Gayle - Yes and YES! The swing is virtually the same through the entire bag aside from some minor setup adjustments from shorter clubs to longer ones. And this brings up a very important key as we get to the woods and the driver: since the ball position is more forward for these clubs, we need to ensure that the lateral movement of the hips towards the target continues through the entirety of the downswing in order to keep the club on the proper in to out path. It's no different for shorter clubs; it's just that it's easier to execute with those because the ball position is a bit further back. A couple of suggestions if you'd really like to get on the fast track towards learning and owning this swing: 1) Please consider enrolling in the SagutoGolf online school. For just $10 US/month or $99 US/year you'll have unlimited access to a comprehensive members-only system for the full swing (including the finer points and feels), the short game, and much more. Here's a link if you'd like additional info: saguto.golf/p/golf-swing-simplified-tom-saguto-pga. 2) For a very useful supplement to the online school, consider purchasing a copy of the Stack & Tilt book by Mike Bennett and Andy Plummer. It will serve you well as a textbook reference guide for the swing and will be highly supportive of what you will learn in my online school as well as here on this channel. Thanks! Tom

You mentioned once (or twice) in this one maybe hitting a little too much draw. What is the solution for that when one is perhaps hitting a little too much right to left such that a nice draw turns into a hook?
Hi Ken, The answer lies in ball flight laws. Clubface angle relative to target line is the primary influencer of the ball's starting line and face relative to path determines direction and degree of curvature. From there we can then do some reverse engineering to identify and neutralize the cause of a sideways shot. For example, if your grip tends to leak towards the strong side, the face may be more closed at impact. This can cause the ball to start more left than desired (for a right-handed player) and also impart more draw/hook spin on it. FYI, there are entire sections of my online school dedicated to diagnosing and resolving common swing, contact, and ball flight issues. Have you looked into it? That's where - among many other courses and lessons covering various aspects of the game - you will find very detailed instruction and drills that take you through the entire swing step-by-step from setup to finish. Yes, Steven - it’s essentially the same swing with every club; just some minor setup differences and naturally occurring shaft plane changes as we graduate up in club length from short irons to woods. In fact, here is a video of Stack and Tilt co-founder Mike Bennett hitting the driver: ua-cam.com/video/7fmtzyH3rsA/v-deo.html. It looks very similar to his iron swing, right?: ua-cam.com/video/SLjwU_1Cc7o/v-deo.html TS

Great stuff Tom. One question: is it that way for the driver as well? Around your body and shallow? I shot an 85 like I told you but I would love to break 80. I have a difficult time with the driver. I took your advice with turning the body and it worked like a charm. You are my new Micheal Breed but not on the golf channel. haha. Thanks!!
Thank you Steven! Think of it as the same swing with the driver too - the clubs are nearly the same length. Most people are never shallow enough. You've got to swing AROUND to hit the woods well - and swing the club around in general it's just that with the woods, you may have to focus more on doing that motion.
While this system affords you some leeway, in general once my students and members show some level of proficiency with the swing I suggest that they migrate to a stock ball position that is in the middle of the stance for short irons, two balls inside the lead heel for middle irons, and creeping more forward for the longer clubs - the farthest forward being even with the inside of the lead heel for the driver (with the stance width increasing as we move from shorter to longer clubs). From there they can make incremental tweaks to see how different positions affect impact quality and shot shape. So, applying this to the 3- and 5-woods, I would start a ball or so back from the driver position and adjust accordingly if needed. (By the way, with regard to hand position, it remains even with the inside of your lead thigh no matter which club you are hitting. Additionally, the lead arm and club shaft should form a straight line from the face-on view, giving your setup a lowercase "y" look. I hope that helps! caules - In this system, once you own the swing the ball flight rules are primarily based on ball and hand positions. I like hitting a push draw, and since this video was about fairway woods and not different shot shapes I stayed with the push draw. Always watching your vids Tom! Question about the old brain holder...I noticed that you kinda tilt your head up to allow your left shoulder under your chin on the backswing... I have a tendency to look down at the ball and was wondering if your way gives you better balance to keep that head centered? I was hitting irons ok today but when I hit driver it was not good hitting off the heel way too much even when addressing the ball towards the toe. Normally this helps me hit it in the center with old swing but now it has creeped back in. Hadn't seen this video of the little push forward with the hips but noticed your head and how you allow your shoulder to get under your chin instead of on it...sorry for the lengthy comment... love your channel!!
Hi Gregory, The setup for this swing includes a slight forward rounding of the spine so that the neck is angled more toward the ball than the lower back. This provides the shoulders with room to work under the chin without you straining to try look at the ball from the bottoms of your eyes. By the way, have you considered the comprehensive, structured, sequential learning platform of my online school? Looking forward to this video as yet one more way to ruin my life. Your S&T method and lessons have made such a tremendous difference in my game that I went from almost quitting the game to spending all my time on the range or on the course. I am 76 years young and went from shooting in the mid 90s to low to mid 80s after about 2 months on my home course. Amazing! However, my wife complains that all I think about, talk about, and do now is golf. Even the dog is pissed.
Congratulations Bill! That's wonderful news! Sorry to hear that it's negatively impacted your personal life - something's gotta give..... LOL

One of the greatest golf videos on the net. I think if one can hit a 3 wood off the deck cleanly then most likely their contact is solid through their bag. IMHO

Tom
Isn't the hip forward for drivers only and not irons and woods? Or is it more than 1 inch hip forward for driver and less for woods and irons?

Tom, Great lesson. Season finally just starting here in MN. Weight forward, stacked position with head not bobing and weaving like some middleweight champion, and hands back. An additional great hint I picked up from you on your lessons is trail shoulder back in throwing position at the top. Yes, Tom - trail shoulder retraction as we get to the top is one of the power accumulators of the swing, and it will definitely help keep your radius intact!
Have fun out there!!

Set my rogue to 8 degrees too and man oh man.

Unbelievable great, as per usual. Can you talk about momentum in the swing? The longer clubs carry more mo, no?

This year however I'm struggling with it mostly inconsistent. When I do it right I hit the ball great but I'm not sure that I'm doing everything correctly so I might go ahead and sign up for a lesson from you online. So you can maybe look at my swing let me know what I am doing wrong
As an enrolled member you'll enjoy:
- Unlimited access to comprehensive members-only systems for the full swing.
- Discounted rate on my V1 Swing Video Analysis service.

i want to say thank you first and foremost your video on back swing with making sure the head is out in front of hands and then looping back to hit from the bottom worked wonders on my driver .
Thanks,

Hi Tom, great videos !!! I would like to hear more from the guy that lives in the woods !!! I seem to hit the ball better when I hit a fade for some reason. Do the stack and tilt principles still apply to us who hit a fade , weight on the front foot, arms not up but around and so forth ? I can’t hit a draw to save my LIFE !!! Your advice would be greatly appreciated.

My pleasure, Beau!!

Oopsie... I do believe I neglected to include the "Hazards of Insane Extra Distance" disclaimer and warning verbiage with this lesson...
Apologies to the group in front, Chris!! It's a good thing this was only shortly after viewing the video. Clearly had you had a little time to practice it you would have hit through or even over them!

On average 250-260 yards with the 3-wood.

Unusual back swing.
Like most golfers - even those at the highest levels of the game - I have nuances that I try to resolve, but bottom line is that it performs well for me consistently, provides a predictable ball flight, and is easy on the body.

HAHAHAHAHA when in Rome........
Please show me how to master the hybrids with that easy swing an less pain on the body. Thanks
Hi Fabio,
It is essentially the same swing with every club; just some minor setup differences and naturally occurring shaft plane changes as we graduate up in club length from short irons to woods. To demonstrate, you'll find towards the end of this episode some driving range footage of me hitting a 7 iron, 3 wood, and driver: ua-cam.com/video/o0xscMyN3v8/v-deo.html
This is indeed a very body-friendly motion as supported by the fact that a significant percentage of my online school members are in their 60's, 70's, and 80's - i.e.: a smorgasbord of chronic ailments, physical limitations, back/shoulder/knee/hip pain, arthritis, and joint replacements - and they are overwhelmingly elated to experience the dramatic pain-free game improvement, seemingly effortless power, and resulting enjoyment that this swing affords them.
After spending enough hours out there I have a pretty good feel for the grazing times, Mike...😂
I know it's probably impossible to do by yourself, but I'd really like to see how you address the ball from your point of view. Maybe a GoPro on your head? Haha.
If there's a will, there's a way.
Do you have any vids on the course, that is really popular on youtube. I've watched a lot of them

Francis Pesce You just “send it”. 😁
Awesome Tom... What distance do you get with a fairway wood
Generally 260 with the 3-wood, though I can crank it up to about 280 if I add some serious Wrath!
Watched this yesterday. Took it to the range and the course ... I hit it straight down the fairway. 5 wood went 230 yards.
Well done, Jack!! I'm glad to know you were able to put this lesson into play so quickly!!
Thanks for sharing!
Tom
Check out my channel I have a video hitting a 5 wood.
Thank you, going to try that tommorow.
Let me know how it goes!
Thanks Tom for another great video, just one question do you raise youre self in the backswing?
A couple of suggestions if you'd really like to get on the fast track towards learning and owning this swing:
1) Please consider enrolling in the SagutoGolf online school. For just $10 US/month or $99 US/year you'll have unlimited access to a comprehensive members-only system for the full swing (including the finer points and feels), the short game, and much more. 2) For a very useful supplement to the online school, consider purchasing a copy of the Stack & Tilt book by Mike Bennett and Andy Plummer. You mentioned once (or twice) in this one maybe hitting a little too much draw. What is the solution for that when one is perhaps hitting a little too much right to left such that a nice draw turns into a hook?
Hi Ken,
The answer lies in ball flight laws.
Hi the hip movement before play your shoot can you do this with your irons or is it just Woods.
It looks very similar to his iron swing, right?: ua-cam.com/video/SLjwU_1Cc7o/v-deo.html

I thought your swing looked a little strange, do you do a bit off the stack swing with Hogan fundamentals??
Good job. This is awesome help.
Thank you Kevin!
What is the perfect ball position for both 3 & 5 fairway Wood Tom ??
Tom

Hi Tom. That is good for draw shots, but how do you do it for straight shots???
caules - In this system, once you own the swing the ball flight rules are primarily based on ball and hand positions.

Hi Gregory,
The setup for this swing includes a slight forward rounding of the spine so that the neck is angled more toward the ball than the lower back. This provides the shoulders with room to work under the chin without you straining to try look at the ball from the bottoms of your eyes.
