Sam Saliba - I hope you are well & all good in life .. nice to see someone who is proud of their heritage & not afraid to say it .. I salute you my friend 🙏 🇲🇹 🏴
Look up “The War of Saint Sabas” your welcome It had to do with the control of Acre. And the Genoese and Venetian merchants. The orders took sides and swords were definitely swung at one another but it wasn’t anything consistent.
I find it very refreshing that even after 3 years so many people are still leaving positive comments about the good work the hospitallers did & still do 🇲🇹
You forgot to mention that The Order was established at Rhodes Island, Greece (1306-1522). Therefore, the well-known Hospitaller's Cross emblem was firstly named as the Rhodian Cross. The Old Castle City of Rhodes is proudly until today prevailed by the monumental Grand Magister's Castle, fully restored to be one of the most well - presented castles today. 200 years of The Knights Hospitaller's history, along with their marks on that island should not be neglected.
The main question I want answered about the Knights Hospitaller is this: What was it that allowed them to survive into the present day (they are now known as the Sovereign Military Order Of Malta) while all the other major Knightly/Crusader orders disappeared/disbanded/went out of existence? I'm convinced it had something to do with the fact that they originally started as a hospital for the sick and the elderly, and so they had that function to fall back on when knighthood and chivalry went out of style, but I don't know for sure if this is completely accurate.....
knight templars my friend was excommunicated by Pope with charges of heracy and paganism but the order of malta aka knight hospitaller supported Pope's move and i guess thats why they survived....also France allied with the pope and the swiss guard to eliminate the remaining strongholds and castles that templars had throughout Europe which ofc then pope took the management of them all ! beware tho....templars created a very functional system of economy which many countries relly on their economy! with few changes ofc...
@@awakendnd2749 There are quite a few inaccuracies in your statements, my friend. First of all, literally ONLY in France were the Templars found guilty. Everywhere else they were tried, they were found innocent, because everyone else, INCLUDING the Hospitallers, realized that this so-called “trial” was nothing more than a plot by King Phillip of France to basically LYNCH the Templars and steal their cash. Second, after the next Pope disbanded the Templars (because he felt too much damage had been done to the order for it to recover), the Hospitallers were among the forefront of the religious knightly orders who welcomed the now former Templars into their order(s) with open arms.
The Teutonic Order survives to this day, as does the Order of Saint Lazarus. Although Lazarus is quite similar to the Hospitallers, the Teutonics were most definitely a more military order and maintained extensive territories for centuries.
After the Crusades were finally over (When the Mamluk Sultanate defeated Mongol Invasion) They were the last *real* presence of Christendom in the 'Holy Land'. However, their Scolls, Humility and treasures were made for any & all. Their service as a Military Order was out of Desperation. Many Western Pilgrims were just mere peasents and (at the time) How could such a Kingly army of that Guy or Richard be bolstered by Peasents.. That's what they were but the Pope gave them a Fair-Doctors wage for any who wanted and had proved themselves worthy of the task.
Amazing video, just one little clarification. The Order of Malta actually DOES military training, but that's true just for the Military Corps of the Order that serve inside the Italian Army thanks to an agreement with the italian government at the end of the 19th century. So technically there are still hospitaller militant knights that actually go to war, mainly with rescue tasks and combat medics
I live in Rhodes and I go to the castle 5 times a week, You can also own a house inside the city of the castle, I just feel like home when I go there and this video makes me like the Hospitallers and the castle a whole lot more
I serve in the Italian Army, and I wish to join soon the military corps of the Sovereign Military Order of Malta, which is technically the armed branch of the Order thanks to an agreement with the italian government at the end of the 19th century. Gerard Thom did not create the Sovereign Military order of Malta. He founded the Sovereign Military Hospitaller Order of Saint John of Jerusalem. The Maltese aspect was added some 500 years later.
What did the knights look like when Napoleon arrived on Malta? That would of been a clash of time of two groups of people of 500 years apart on the same island.
They looked like any modern army at the time. I read somewhere that Napoleon bluffed the order wich let the french embark their ships only to be occupied by the french. Malta, at the time, was probably one of the most fortified cities in europe, attacking it would have ment conciderable losses for the french. Not to mention the knights had a powerful navy.
The Templars sadly adopted gnostic & Mohammedan beliefs which lead to their destruction... a few hundred years spent in the the cradle of both true and false religion can do that if your not careful.
@@HOSPlTALLER i mean how is that connection even possible? how can a hardcore Christian order adopt such beliefs, you might be referring to extremism or some specific aspect. so saying it in a general manner doesn't help, also it only reflects your personal take, not necessarily stating facts. try to be more specific. btw I'm just asking out of curiosity, so you can take it easy buddy.

This is all fun. But I have a real gripe with the hospitallers. They ruined what is arguably one of the greatest architectural achievements of man when they pillaged and looted the tomb of halicarnassus 😢
Sort of, the military segment or 'Sword Brothers' were more specialised in warfare but could perform basic first aid/medial work, there were more specialist brothers who weren't really tasked with combat duty.
