The show is epic and hilarious if you ever got a chance to watch it then do it. Please I guarantee that you'll like it. It was very popular back when it was on. why they stopped it, that I don't know.
I know this show has a similar art style to the Simpsons and Futurama because of the show’s creators were show runners on the Simpsons but it also strangely enough looks like the same art style as Hey Arnold as well. Craig Bartlett, the creator of Hey Arnold, is a relative of Matt Groening so it’s just cool seeing how a lot of these cartoons connect.
This was the most New York song I'd ever heard in my life. It just sounded like Broadway, Bronx Zoo, Queens, Times Square. Loved this show when I was little
Never realized this, but Fox actually revamped Jay's apartment to make it look more "modest", in the hopes that the series would connect with a larger audience.
I haven't been to my office in Manhattan in 3 months. I miss it so much and I feel such pain for everyone in the city right now. This song and art makes me cry for all the time I've spent there.
As a NYC guy born and raised, the theme always it a chord with me. Granted. I never watched one min of the show past the minute theme song. Maybe I'll give it a go
It's kinda bizarre how most modern animation doesn't even try to make backgrounds look appealing... When Harvey Beaks did a bunch of stylized & textured backgrounds, it really made me wonder why more shows don't take advantage of digital technology to make a nice textured look!
@@Oecobius33 I just looked up Harvey Beaks, those backgrounds are SO lovely. Especially in contrast to the more flat character designs. Good atmosphere. I've been getting into watercolor painting so I can add nice backgrounds to my own animations, it's been a lot of fun. I'd wager that studios tend to gravitate towards flatter, digital backgrounds for time reasons. I have a pal who works in animation, and he talks all the time about how tight the deadlines usually are lol
I remember watching the show as a kid, but it was clear that I was way too young to get the jokes. The Simpson's, even during their most subtly irreverent Golden Age period, had great humor that was still accessible to kids. To me, this show's style and main character were a sort of homage to Woody Allen and his films. New York wasn't just a setting that the show happened to be set in, but was rather a fleshed out character, just as the city is represented in Allen's most New York-centric films. What other show would present a fairly detailed background of the Trump Tower just to make a Trump bankruptcy joke? And just listen to that New York-romantic clarinet main theme as we watch Jay visit various parts of the city. It's like we're watching the intro scenes to "Manhattan"! Unfortunately for us kids, the homage was more towards the neurotic dialogue-filled New York films like "Annie Hall" and "Manhattan" rather than the slapstick comedies "Bananas" or "Take the Money and Run". In other words, it was too high-brow for the younger audience to truly understand. Cartoons will always attract kids and repel certain adults who think they're too mature for cartoons. So the show definitely lost a big chunk of it's audience by being too sophisticated for them.
I loved this show when I was a kid. I find it funny knowing that the guy who spoke for Jay Sherman (Jon Lovitz) also spoke for T. R. Khula, the spider in the Fievel trilogy.
Honestly, it has been years since I've watched this show, and I need something new to watch during my long walks to work since I'm nearing the end of Season 8 of the Simpsons.
Not only does this intro not age well due to the twin towers, but now it’s the scene with bridge collapsing after the Francis Scott key bridge fell down. Smh
the comedy central needs to start showing the critic on their channel. we all want this back on the tv and i think that comedy central should have a critic marathon for july 4th 2021. theres still a lot of peopel love this and wants it back on the air.
🌆🌉🏙️🏢🏪🏤🏣 If comedy Central can put back on Futurama and still show South Park right, So why can't they put back on the Critic and Dr. Kat's professional therapist. Why can't they show what we would like also and not just other people.
@@joshgellis3292 Of course it had to be the ratings, I guess not enough to keep it going for a third season. With so many people watching it I thought it would last for a while, guess I was wrong.
Yeah, and also Family Guy airs on Comedy Central after leaving syndication like CW along with Bob's Burgers due to expiring contracts, how depressing, Family Guy is everything since I found that cartoon along with Bob's Burgers at night while I was changing channels and I found these two cartoons, and later The Simpsons. At least The Simpsons is still airing on syndication like CW, the only syndication animation. Speaking of Family Guy, the series returns to Adult Swim after taken off the air 2021 due to Disney's acquisition of 21st Century Fox (by killing off) including 20th Century Fox (Studios) which it's a bad deal by affecting the nostalgic content and the negativity reputation of the company or studio.
Today I discovered that my art style looks eerily similar. I've never even seen this show... it's cool though. It inspires me to paint more of the city :)
The very unique way this show was drawn is very color pencil. I LOVE IT FOR THAT. I love how they drew the characters, places and things! :.D It won't get the respect it needed, writing could of been better and the jokes tended to be underpowered.
I'm not from New York - I haven't even been to the American continent. But this intro always encapsulated my idea of the real New York. The cosmopolitan, modern, vibrant, multicultural pre-9/11 metropolis it used to be. Movies like Home Alone 2 also helped shape my understanding of what the city was, and how it felt to be there, at least in concept, as a young boy growing up far away in '90s Denmark.
@@johnqpublic1 Absolutely. I'd love to go travelling a lot more in general if I had the money, but I'm way too poor for it. If I went to the USA, NYC would be one of the must see cities for me.

As much as I want this show back, modern movies would give Jay a stroke.

Bruh my parents had this on DVD when I was a kid, it's sooo nostolgic
Go watch the show.
It's basically "Rhapsody in Blue" by Gershwin
i've never seen any media portray an early, sunny morning in nyc quite as accurate as this opening. it's perfect.
It's surreal to see the World Trade Center nowadays...
Yeah, I guess it kind of is
seeing the towers really dates a program nowadays. odd little quirk
James Haney yes and sad too🥺
better times man, better times...
It'll be surreal to see a certain suspension bridge too.

You should listen to An American in Paris. It's quite similar
Not surprised, the opening has that George Gershwin orchestral jazz feel.
Fun fact Hans Zimmer did the score for this show

Its much closer to Rhapsody in Blue.
The oboe in the shows intro is just very calming and relaxing and pleasant to listen to.

I adore the painted backgrounds of older animation. Modern animation tends to be digitally drawn, loses a lot of those good textures
