Love this book and love Toriyama. It is a shame that a lot of fans and/or haters never go back to look at his MASSIVE history of comics and fantastic visual storytelling (design, comedy and action). Very happy to see you guys discuss this collection. If it weren't for Toriyama, I wouldn't have ended up living here in Tokyo (originally working at a former Shonen Jump manga-ka's studio).

Yeah, it's like the DB fans hate that he also create another series other than Dragon Ball, especially the recent Sand Land movie announcement made people says it's dragon ball rip off, or just tell Toriyama to work on dragon ball instead lol.

You guys should cover Rumiko Takahashi's Rumic World and Rumic Theater. That's another great example of a masterful creator's early work that show what would later become her more successful titles like Ranma 1/2, Urusei Yatsura, and Inuyasha. I highly recommend the title Those Selfish Aliens.

There’s a story in this called “Mad Matic” If you’re a fan of toriyama outside of just Dragon Ball definitely check it out. It’s Toriyama at his peak artistically.

Pick this book up now folks !! I guarantee you this won’t get reprinted like a Dragonball or Dr.Slump due to lack of interest from the general public . It’s a great read and get it for a steal while you can

You guys just keep hitting me right where I live. I'm honestly surprised how long it took the Dragon Ball manga to makes its way to the US... I was a huge manga nerd going way back, but I ONLY started reading DB when I did a year abroad in Spain. They were publishing TWO DB issues a week in pamphlet form (one starting at chapter 1, the other starting with the DBZ storlyline). I've been in love with Toriyama ever since.
And Ed-- I just might have that Viz Sandland tankoubon somewhere in my basement...

Thank you so much for this, been hoping you guys would do some Toriyama and sort of thought this one in particular might appeal to you both. Sometimes I feel that because of Dragon Ball's popularity Toriyama's work doesn't get as much appreciation as it should. Interesting to note that he worked as a designer primarily before going into manga, and I feel he carried a lot of those principles over to his work especially in its clarity and flow. Also love that you called out his vehicle design, which has always been a favorite aspect f his work personally. Probably no artist whose work has been more instructive to me if I'm being honest. Would love to see you two deep dive into a volume of Dragon Ball someday if copyright would allow and more Tezuka as well like 'Dororo.' Love this channel and the inquisitive and insightful spirit you bring to each book and interview.

I remember reading Hirohiko Araki’s how to make manga book and he cites Araki as the greatest manga artist of all time. Thought that was really cool, one legend giving it up to another. Reminds me of the dynamic between J-Dilla and Madlib.

I read a book now and again, while in the last two years, with exposure to Cartoonist Kayfabe, most of my comics reading has transitioned from monthly floppys to collections, graphic novels, manga, some work from you guys and Tom, some Kayfabe-effect books. Check out Yokohama Kaidashi KiKou, volume one of the English translation was released in August 2022! Getting an official, excellent translation, in print, is a dream-come-true for me.

I have the second untranslated volume of Toriyama Theater, which has the Dragon Boy story. Even untranslated it's amazing to look at.
Also, I second the Rumic World and Rumic Theater. There's some great stuff in there, and some of them were animated, which was impressive for one shot stories.

For Dragonball, Toriyama had a guy who helped with backgrounds. He would usually draw a background the first time it appeared, then after that his assistant would take over. Its interesting because you can see the assistant(s) getting better. Great looking book, much more developed than I thought it would be. Going to top of my wishlist, thanks for the look.

I was so stoked to see VIZ release this collection! Toriyama is possibly my favorite mangaka out there, and a top cartoonist to match. Even if some of these stories are hit or miss, they’re all incredibly charming and have a ton of style, and I think that remains consistent through all of Toriyama’s works.

I often wondered if Dragon Ball and Toriyama was famous in the USA as it is here in France and I think other european countries because it doesn't show in the american artists (I may be wrong) it is a little sad to know that only 2 millions DB books were sold in a country of 360 millions inhabitants. I checked the numbers in France and the french publisher declared in 2021, 26 millions of copies sold since the beginning (mid 90's) and 1.8 millions just for 2021. The first manga being One Piece with more than 5 millions in 2021. Is One Piece a good sell in the USA.
Besides those Manga Theaters, in France, we also had the chance to see a book called "L'apprenti Mangaka" (The mangaka apprentice) by Toriyama where he talks about how to do manga that might interest you. I don't know if an english version.
    Keep up the good work!

Thing is, in the American continent, we barely got mangas, and Dragon Ball came out in late 80's to all 90's and 2000 for Latin America. But only as an anime since cartoons and american comics were the only predominant fantasy media for us (I'm talking in behalf of the continent). Manga was a very niche or unknown and anime was considered a form of japanese cartoons with no serious support/interest unlike today.

Regarding low US sales of Dragon Ball and manga in general: while low literacy and declining reading habits are in part to blame, let's not discount the effect that digital piracy has had on manga sales. To the young modern comics reader, there's little point in buying a clunky physical copy when it's freely available through ethically dubious channels, creators' rights be damned.

    • @ferdinandrouge2839
      @ferdinandrouge2839 Рік тому

Low sales in manga?, but it's the best selling comic book type at the moment, along with graphic novel, you can see at any digital store, marketplace or platform.
I agree with your first point, Dragon Ball has never sell a lot outside Japan, like One Piece, Kochikame, Toriko and others.
And is due to getting it's anime adaptation before manga, then you have merch like figures, toys, cards, videogames, etc.

I won't lie I don't read a lot of "normal" books but I devour comics and manga. I've bought the complete set of Dragon Ball twice now due to them getting damaged during a move! Such a great series, though I've not been as active in collecting Super.
