I hit the kill screen in Dig Dug in 1982 in a 7-11 in Twin Falls, Idaho…when it completely fizzled out, I thought it was the machine being destroyed and felt really bad. I had played most of the day and into the night… it was very fun and I hurt like hell.
Such an AWESOME game. Classic arcade games in general are a blast but Dig Dug is definitely a cut above. Nothing complicated about it, just kick-ass fun. Thanks for the video John, keep up the good work!
It's honestly my favorite arcade game of all time. Not only is it fun but it's frustratingly tough but that's what makes it so much fun; you have to work hard to win. I even have a mini version from MY ARCADE and it's so awesome!
Aw man. I saw you guys filming this but I had no idea it was about a Dig Dug kill screen. Wish I came over to watch it in person. Very cool. I didn't even know it was possible.
I didn't realize you could hold a rock back from falling by pushing into it and hitting the pump! That's a pretty handy trick. I always miss the way you can save and push the apples in Mr. Do! when I play Dig-Dug.
That was pretty amazing. Never seen a Dig Dug killscreen before. used to play it all the time on my Atari 2600 and 5200 and still play it in mame and any time I see it in the wild but the furthest I've ever gotten is round 15. To see someone go all the way was incredible.
yeah has to be some sorta program code thing, like in super mario bros. if you farm for 1ups too long you'll go past 255 and wrap around to 0, so when you die that's it it's game over.
Yes, same error. An eight bit register can only count from 0 to 255. If you don't plan for the possibility that someone is going to exceed that value, there are unintentional consequences when it tries to add a number to the non-existent ninth bit (100000000) in binary since all the existing bits read as zeros. Think of it as rolling the odometer on your car. In Dig Dug, the level reads at 0 so it doesn't know where to place the enemies so it defaults the Frygars to Dig Dug's default position in the middle of the screen. In Pac-Man it causes an error trying to draw the correct number of fruit on the screen so it just starts pulling in other bits of data (which is why only the right side of the screen is affected). In Super Mario Bros, your active number of lives flips to zero so you instantly die.
If it's level 256 it prolly means they only used an 8-bit number so it can't go above 255 and just as I'm typing this you said you didn't want this geeky talk on the channel again haha
I don't even think there was a bit/byte debate. I know of a kB/KB debate, which I started off being wrong about, so I therefore converted my OP to talking about "kB" instead of "KB." (But there may have still been that other debate...)
An 8-bit integer variable has 8 different bits, ons and zeros. If you take 2, which are the states it can go in, The highest the number can be is 256. Mathematical proof is when you take 2 and multiple it by 2 eight times in a row. That is 256. If it goes higher it will revert back to zero because of how the bit shifting is organized. 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 2 4 8 16 32 64 128 256 And a byte is a collection of four bits, because then you don't need indecipherable binairy numbers, but you work with a 16 base number system. Any four digit binary number can be made with one hexidecimal or 16 base number. This was to make code easier to read.
Isn't the highest number for an 8 bit integer 255 (values 0 - 255 allowed), so when Dig Dug tries to get to level 256 you get an overflow on the integer and thus a kill screen. Same for DK and Pac-Man
Does Dig Dug slow down at a certain point? When I get to lvl 30 odd, you need patterns to get the swarming monsters and they are at their fastest. On Ken's game in the video, the enemies didn't look as evil!
All enemies don't move in ghost eye mode at level 136. From levels 137-255 they move slowly in ghost eye mode, gradually picking up speed, but never as fast as the levels before the slowdown. At level 126, the Fygars don't move if they are at the top of the screen and move slowly on the top of the screen between levels 127-135.
The way I play, one pattern will work for some stages and others I have to switch things up. Between levels 136-255, I change things up more than levels 32-135.
12 : pm owner of store : hey buddy i have to close the store he : wait a minute , I have not lose yet he finish playing and tell... i come back tomorrow to insert another coin owner of store : omg not pls , you will not let all the customers play XD I like Dig Dug (is my favorite) is one of the best games of all time n_n
He does all the editing and upload from home. Depending on the quality of the video, network, and other factors, do you know how much time is involved to upload to UA-cam and to have it rendered properly for streaming online?
Aww, shucks, it's almost sad that that killscreen is the way it is! It really wastes ya! Hmm, I think I'd rather just see how high the best player could ever get. Anyway, it was still somewhat interesting to see this.
When I was 10 years old I once played this at home for 9 hours without breaks (sitting on a very uncomfortable floor) with not a single life lost. The last 30 minutes Atari started acting weird (got too hot) and the TV screen started flimmering and I couldnt see the game properly anymore. I never played the game again but I believe there is a chance that I have the Norwegian Dig Dug record in longplay with only one life ... :)
Dig Dug is such a freaking amazing arcade game! One of the best video games ever made!

Ken house steps in...
Namco: OH CRAP, HERE WE GO AGAIN!
Dig-Dug fricking rocks! One of the all-time best classic games EVER made. If you're into classic games, Dig-Dug is a must.
Wow this guy is pro! Awesome, love this game, still a load of fun 💗
Great performance! Love the irony of the game telling the world record holder to go for the world record lol.
It's honestly my favorite arcade game of all time. Not only is it fun but it's frustratingly tough but that's what makes it so much fun; you have to work hard to win. I even have a mini version from MY ARCADE and it's so awesome!
thanks for the always entertaining videos john, i always enjoy your vids!

Dig Dug is such a fun game! I can't make it much further than round 10 or so. But I have a great time doing it.
Loving these little focused Grinkers videos. Great work!
One of my fave Grinkers videos!
Wow, I too had no idea that game had a kill screen? Very cool, thanks for sharing this. I'm really digging these short location videos.
Awesome!
Definitely one of my favorite games!
I have an original marquee and bezel...just wish I had a cabinet!
Great vid John!
Get the quarter Arcade.
✌
This is cool! I've managed 150k on my DigDug, I need to play more!
~ Thanx fur sharing this John & Broseph ~ It was really cool of you to catch Ken's Kill Screen - So, 256 levels is the kill screen eh? Sweet.
Ken House in the house!
Geez, and I get excited when I crack 100K on my RetroPi unit. LOL
love this road trips, keep going !
Great game. I played this game for hours as a kid.
I knew Ken was going to tear it up when i seen him go get the chair.
Enjoy that game. cool to see a kill screen.
Awesome. Had no idea. Got to read article. Thx
That. Was. AWESOME!
Such a cool game. I have 4 Centipedes. So tempted to convert one to Dig Dug. They seem to be harder to find not converted. .
That was pretty amazing. Never seen a Dig Dug killscreen before. used to play it all the time on my Atari 2600 and 5200 and still play it in mame and any time I see it in the wild but the furthest I've ever gotten is round 15. To see someone go all the way was incredible.
Playstation too
DIG DUG has always been a great game.
it's kinda funny how his name is exactly 3 letters long
Thanks for the don hodges tip Ken!
Namco. We put 200 Lit. there.Or 100,can't remember.
That was totally awesome!
So wish I could be there.
Ken taking it to the House

I can kill a screen on round 1 by unplugging the arcade from the wall.
round 256 is the kill screen, nort unplugging...
I know some NAMCO/Bally/Midway games has a million place score if you use player 2. I wonder if Dig-Dug has it.
Try to make a video of all the know kill screens.
~ HAMM'S...! Bad Ass ~ Love Hamm's Broseph..!
That intro is so freaking obnoxious.
And I love it.
..kick n ass Ken
That was so cool
If it's level 256 it prolly means they only used an 8-bit number so it can't go above 255 and just as I'm typing this you said you didn't want this geeky talk on the channel again haha
LOL! I knew that as soon as it was revealed it was level 256 it was going to cause another BIT AND BYTE DEBATE. GO FOR IT! DISSECT IT! :)
I don't even think there was a bit/byte debate. I know of a kB/KB debate, which I started off being wrong about, so I therefore converted my OP to talking about "kB" instead of "KB."

Jesus. I apologise for this, John.

NeoTurboManiac So, from levels 30 odd to 136 - can a single set of patterns get me there?
The way I play, one pattern will work for some stages and others I have to switch things up. Between levels 136-255, I change things up more than levels 32-135.
NeoTurboManiac Gah! I'll never get that 999990 on my hi score table! I'm at 506k at the moment.
Victor Marland I was in the same position as you years ago. Keep on trying.

I like Dig Dug (is my favorite) is one of the best games of all time n_n
That was sweet!!!!!
Basically the game starts at round 1, after the round rolls over at 255 then the counter reverts to 0 the game wasn’t programmed for round 0...
Might as well skip to 7:30 or just skip the video altogether lol
I thought Ken House was dead.
i have the world record of dig dug to 1,000,000 pts at round 85 or 95
Epic.
Wait, so you're still out there? How are you editing these out on the road? Did I forget that you have a laptop computer with the editor on it?
He does all the editing and upload from home. Depending on the quality of the video, network, and other factors, do you know how much time is involved to upload to UA-cam and to have it rendered properly for streaming online?
Yep, I surely do, and that's just why I asked the question, darkside1exisle.
is he drinking beer ?
Dug dug is the best
SO BADASS
This is why I like Mr. Do! better. :-)
cool game
Nothing against you Tighe Lory but I like Dig Dug a LOT more than Mr. Do!
All Access Gaming how much have you played Mr Do? the game has so much depth and cool things, were Dig Dug is pretty 1 dimensional.
***** Dig Dug being 1 dimensional doesn't bother me at all though.
i own them both and i definitely play Mr Do more
Aww, shucks, it's almost sad that that killscreen is the way it is! It really wastes ya! Hmm, I think I'd rather just see how high the best player could ever get. Anyway, it was still somewhat interesting to see this.
nice

OOPS. FIXED.
Cool.. I bought a dig dug little arcade game . Just like the real thing
dang what a cheap kill screen!
Hey Rob! Yeah, kind of like the DK kill screen, it doesn't look llike much!
lol Kenny
Ah yes Dig-Dig, my favorite arcade game. Sooo much better than Dug-Dug... lol
LOL. WHOopS. FIXED.
Pretty sweet vid man! I didn't even know Dig-Dug HAD a kill-screen!
nope i call fake. 7:17 that rock wouldve crushed him. 100%
Not true. You'd have to understand the hitbox algo to get what happens. That is 100% normal.
Awesome
