    That's a great idea but those look fit for a swimming pool, why so small? I think a larger model could be made...

      @El hijo del sol : The text description provided by CBC for this video doesn't explicitly mention use of these devices for marinas, only saying Toronto's harbour, but the title for the video specifically says it's about Toronto's marina and the harbour surely consists of more than only marinas. The video shows demonstration of the device in a marina. Making the device large when it's used for cleaning marinas might not be a good idea, for the device floating around could, instead, then become a hindrance. I've seen some marinas that're used by plenty of people, usually with sizable boats, rather than small craft that're much more easily maneuverable; f.e., canoes, kayaks, row boats, .... Also, the device evidently isn't collecting tons of waste, so maybe the size of it shown in this video is adequate for marinas as well as for Toronto's entire harbour. Also, the size of it shown in this video surely doesn't need to be the only model. Larger ones could surely be made, but, again, people likely wouldn't want that for marinas.

    a 2500L/min pump? that's about a 6kw pump.... that is not very energy efficient for 4kg of trash a day...

      why not hire some guy with a boat to net all the floating garbage? just put a solar panel roof over the boat and a little trolling motor to be "Green".

    Cool invention but it would be cooler if we just put our waste in the garbage in the first place.

  • @Justme-ly1ej

    It does collect organic material too and in a large body of water there is a lot of it which means you would need to check bin filter often...only down side I see. Otherwise, this is a great start to cleaning up our careless disposal of garbage in our water. Plastic needs to have a shelf life so it deteriorates after so long....food for thought or maybe discontinue its use all together...even better.

    Instead of complaining about politicians etc, people should put more effort into actually doing something. Instead of complaining about garbage these guys did something about it. Less qq more pew pew

    I wonder how it's powered, and is there a way to retrieve it if it breaks, and a way to know if one breaks... Cool device though, and it's great that it's automatic as getting people to empty these out is a lot less than actually collecting the trash. And can it spit back out say a small fish or non-garbage or will just suck up whatever is around. I love that it's made of recycled material too.

    Only problem i see is that both times you saw them pull the catch bag out of the water most of the stuff was organic. You dont want that in a clear pool but wood, leaves and other natural organic material are going to be the largest amount of things collected with those skimmers. That is how a pool works and that looks like how these work.

    One of my friends kids got really messed up picking up a Portuguese man of war thinking it was a plastic bag in the water. They were on vacation in Florida and she was only 4 at the time and is scarred for life all along her right hand and forearm down to her elbow where the tentacles dropped when she held it up. So be careful you know what you’re picking up. And tell your kids too.

    “Simpsons did it!” It was called the Burns Omni-net.
    In all seriousness though... a student could travel the harbour in a paddle-boat and earn a paycheque at cheap instead of the adult who hits the docks to empty those things and gets more for doing less. Plus - Plus!

    • @KCautodoctor
      @KCautodoctor 5 років тому +3

      It uses a 500watt motor (all the technical specs on company website) -- there are bigger electrical parasitic draws plugged into most docks than that on a daily basis (all the battery maintainers installed on boats not being used, the cruisers plugged in charging their house batteries and running their AC, etc)

    • @robvannNS
      @robvannNS 5 років тому

      @@KCautodoctor 500w = 3/4 horsepower running 24/7.. but you are right..the energy wasted in these marinas is ridiculous.

    just add the build of this product weight and shipping and of course all the electric that it uses,
    after that you haven't saved the world - you have made it even worse. since lifespan is too short for what it does.

      People care. I just think that the material like wood, leaves, bugs are going to be the majority of the items caught. Lots of sorting the real trash from the natural material. Great idea but it just means you need to empty the skimmers more than if you had a net on a kind of conveyor belt that caught only large material.

    • @ayden8966
      @ayden8966 5 років тому

      Not really. Putting plastic in water to pick up plastic.
