    Was 8 when this came out and the lean was almost as shocking as the moonwalk. Everything that set MJ as the greatest is in this short film. His trademark vocal, moonwalk, fedora, choreography. Everything.

    • @PhilPastor
      @PhilPastor 9 місяців тому +3

      Yeah, I heard there was some type of peg that popped up from the floor into the dancer's shoes to allow that "lean".... because it really is gravity defying, but looks cool as hell!

    I have to answer the skin thing. Michael Jackson had a skin condition called Vitiligo, which causes 'blotching' or light spots. He used light makeup to help blend and eventually went through bleaching processes to make it even.

    • @MiddleAgedBob
      @MiddleAgedBob 9 місяців тому +2

      Lots of people of all skin tones have vitiligo. And some of them use makeup to cover it up. But they use makeup the color of their natural skin tone.
      MJ had issues that went a lot deeper than a skin condition.
      Still managed to be the greatest performer of all time.

    • @e_hachi1235
      @e_hachi1235 9 місяців тому +5

      @@MiddleAgedBob MJ did use dark makeup for years tho, but he had Vitiligo Universalis where the whole body is affected. So as time went on his condition became where he had more white skin than dark skin, it wouldn't make sense to do full body makeup every time you step out the door. It's a very common thing for people with vitiligo universalis to "switch" tactics to have an even skin tone, it's just a rarer form of the condition and MJ was constantly in the eye of the public who thanks to the media made it into this "weird" thing because a lot of people had never seen it before. He used Benoquin cream on his face and hands, wich lightens the dark blotches and works only on skin of vitiligo patients (FDA approved), agian commonly used for vitiligo sufferers. So to say someone had "issues" when you don't know the situation is unfair to do. Sorry for the whole rant but just wanted to shed some light onto it.

    And for those of you that are too young, These were EVENTS on MTV, when Micheal dropped a new video the world waited with anticipation....they were great little mini-movies. Funny story around MJ, My youngest was about 6, I listen to almost exclusively the 80's on 8 on SiriusXM radio. We're all in the car and I remarked to my wife " Do you remember when MJ was black?" My son from the backseat exclaims " Micheal Jackson was BLACK! You people don't tell me anything!" he was absolutely indignant that we didn't tell him, to be honest it never mattered really, we've laughed about that for years!

  • @harrietmiller3982

    Fun reaction! Nobody can beat magical Michael when it comes to smoothness for sure! It's as if he has some other substance besides bones as he is so fluid! The lean was imagined by Michael and it is special heels with slots that fit into grooves in the floor. So of course they have to be in an exact spot to make it work. However you have to have great core strength to pull it off and he has that for sure!
    You can see him perform this song live on tour and you won't need a filter as it is not an "official" video. A good one would be from Rumania in 1992 I think. They do a great job live. Most all of his tour videos don't require a filter! And speaking of filters there are other choices that aren't so dark you might look for✌️

    A lot of people don't know MJ held a few patents on inventions. One was a cleat that was screwed to the stage floor. And a loop that was on the bottom of his specially made shoes slipped over it. So he would dance into position and attach his shoes to the steel cleat, which allowed him to lean and seemingly defy gravity. There must have been some special brace that strapped to his legs as well to keep him in his shoes.

    You definitely have to check out his full remember the time MV. It has 3 super famous celebs in it with an all black cast! You’ll love it, promise! Michael Jackson had the same skin condition Winnie Harlow has - Vitiligo. It occurs when cells that produce melanin stop functioning which causes light patches on the skin. There’s 5 different types of it and like his Autopsy report confirmed: MJ suffered from Vitiligo Universalis which affects your whole Body. Vitiligo tends to come with other auto immune diseases like lupus. What happens when you have lupus is that your own body attacks its own tissues and organs. Since he had a lot of dead tissue around his cheeks and nose area, he had to go through multiple reconstructive surgeries throughout his life to remove the dead scar tissue which made his nose smaller over time. Greetings from Germany, huuuuuge MJ Fan here!
    p.s: MJ actually invented and patented the shoes he used to do the lean with! Not everyone can do it since it takes a hell lot of strength to pull off that lean!

    Your reaction to Michael Jackson makes me so happy. I grew up watching him starting with The Jackson 5 and then through his solo career. As a girl growing up in the 1960's and 70's there was so much great music to listen to, but like there will never be another Elvis, there will also never be another Michael Jackson. His creativity is unmatched. He was so diverse in what and who influenced his dance moves from both prior generations and contemporaries like James Brown, Elvis, Fred Astaire, Gene Kelly, The Nicholas Brothers, Sammy Davis Jr., Jackie Wilson, Bob Fosse, Marcel Marceau, Charlie Chaplin, and Jeffrey Daniel. Then he took all that knowledge and put his own stamp on it. All his music videos are incredible.

    Now you've gotta do the 'Alien Ant Farm' cover of Smooth Criminal. And Chris Cornells' cover of 'Billie Jean'. The two best MJ covers of ALL TIME. You will dig them both. The AAF one is more of an homage to MJ King of Pop. The Cornell one is different- whilst it's still an homage- Cornell manages to make 'Billie Jean' his own. Slows it way down and reminds us that Billie Jean is actually a really sad and tragic song, and showcases Cornells' voice as an added bonus. Many people- even some hardcore MJ fans- prefer Cornells version of Billie Jean to MJ's- which is clearly saying something. Next to impossible to pull off when covering one of MJ's most iconic songs. But leave it to Chris Cornell to do it- IF anyone ever could. I recommend the version from the Sirius Radio live studio performance. It'll blow you away. Chris changes it into a soulful expression of melancholic storytelling of EPIC proportions. 🤘
    RIP MJ & CC

    MJ creates art. I guess one could argue that all artist do, but we all know there are levels and MJ's creativity just can't be matched. That break in the middle where they swich off the music, channeling the whole pressure, the tension, the roughness, heat and the outlawishness of gansterrun, speakeasy, prohibition 1930 Chicago -vibe...pure art.
    Then again, the music film is a part of Moonwalker, a family friendy action/sci-fi musical, so the drama makes more sense in that framework. Still, without it, the loose threads making one wonder and drawing one in even further, are quite neat too.
    Michael Jackson had discoid lupus erythematosus, a chronic inflamatory, autoimmune condition where the body attacks it's own skin- and mucosatissues. As far as I know, it >>only>> attacks the tissues of the head (face, ears, scalp, mouth) in different extent from person to person. Some say the disease in itself can trigger vitiligo, others say it's the treatment of lupus that does it. Third sais they are genetically linked and fourth sais they are created by much the same endogenic and exogenic triggers. Truth is we don't really know the exact reasons behind these conditions. It's known that the two sometimes are connected, but doesn't have to be (meaning one can have one without ever having the other). Michael Jackson however, had both and sid in the OW-interview in -93 that it runs in the family.
    Vitiligo is a chronic, inflamatory autoimmune skin disorder on it's own. Vitiligo destroys the pigmentation cells of the skin, the ones creating the melanin (melanocytes). Vitiligo comes in different subtypes, the most severe, but also most uncommon, one is called vitiligo universalis and affecs the whole body. This is the one MJ had. The lupus with all probability would have made the depigmentation process go faster than usuall. MJs make-up artist Karen Faye has spoken about how in the beginning they tried to even it out with make-up, filling in the depigmented spots. After a while it had taken over so much, they had to start filling out the still pigmented spots to match the depigmented ones. They sort of used make-up to make it look like a more even-pigmented change than it was, the whole body make-up getting lighter and lighter. MJ also got skin therapy creams and drugs that are normally prescribed to anyone having extensive vitiligo.
    When the melanin leaves the skin, it's left without UV-protection. The lupus also destroys pigmentation and people afflicted by it are told to stay out of the sun. That's why MJ usually wore long-sleeved and -legged clothes outside and stayed out of direct sunlight when possible. I'm sure you've seen pictures of MJ using an umbrella for sunshade?
    No matter when in life or which skintone, Michael Jackson ALWAYS took pride in being black. The bashings MJ had to take for it, however - both from white people and POC, but of course driven by white media - is body shaming on a scale no other celebrity in modern times has ever had to deal with. Few people, actually, has ever had to deal with.

    Some men are gifted with singing in high octaves. Dimash is famous for that as he can sing 6-8 octaves where most singers can only sing 2-3 octaves.
    Check out Dimash - Stranger Here is the link ua-cam.com/video/lFsB5HVnmSA/v-deo.html
    P/S Dimash started music school when he was 5 years old. He is currently working on his PhD in music. He sings in several languages and plays multiple instruments but is most known for his singing. In the song Stranger, he sings in almost all of his vocals from a deep bass to almost whistle register and holds the last note in the song for 20 seconds.

    Mj had both discoid lupus and vitiligo, both are auto immune disorders where your body attacks itself. In mj's case the vitiligo caused him to have a depigmented white spot or splotches throughout his body that gradually spread and got bigger over time. Both lupus and vitiligo are largely responsible for his changing look

    M.J. Is a musical genious. No one else compares to him. He is unique and that's what makes him the "King of Pop". Just like Elvis is the "King of Rock and Roll", James Brown is the "Godfather of Soul" and Aretha is the "Queen of Soul". Each is unique in their own right and has been the inspiration for those who came after them.
    M.J. gets many of his iconic moves ( moon walk ) by dancers from the times of Vaudville. Bill Bailey did the first "moonwalk" ( There is old video film of him doing it in a routine). If you watch the video of the old timers doing a tap dance-off from the movie "TAP" (with Gregory Hines) you will see Sammy Davis Jr., The Sandman, Harold Nicholas and others do some of their classic tap steps) M.J. also took moves by Chuck Berry and James Brown to use in his routines. (Elvis was also influenced by Chuck Berry and James Brown and Little Richard.....he threw in some Karate moves too)
    The exaggerated forward lean is something M.J. Invented ( I think). It involves metal pieces imbeded in the floor and grooves in the heels of the special shoes that attach to the metal. This move also requires a lot of core strength to pull the body up from that almost parallel lean. A lot of exercise and practice is required to do that lean forward.
    M.J. had a disease called vitaligo that changes the pigmentation in the skin over time to pure white. If you go back and watch his videos you can see that around the time he recorded Billie Jean, the color of his skin was changing, only back then he was using Make up to cover the light patches. You can see that because sometimes his face was darker than his original skin color as it almost looked like he had charcoal on His face. I don't know, but think maybe he then started bleaching his skin as the disease was spreading more quickly. That could be a reason why he started wearing one glove. But then he also became very obsessed with his looks and was doing crazy plastic surgery. At one point M.J. said in an interview that as a child his father kept telling him he was ugly and had a big nose.
    I know that after his hair caught fire and severely burned his scalp doing a Pepsi commercial, he started wearing wigs because his hair couldn't grow back. ( to learn more about M.J. I recommend that you read his bio on Wikipedia.
    Hold onto your seat and pay close attention when you do * "THRILLER". It's a mini movie and more pure M.J. genious with one of the most iconic dance scenes ever!!!
    Can't wait for your reaction!

      Excellent breakdown, with one notable omission. A large portion of his more famous early choreography was lifted directly from Bill Fossi's performance of Snake in the Grass from The Little Prince. And yes, you're right, Michael held the patent for the shoes with grooves in the heel to slide onto the metal tabs on the floor for the lean.

    I remember watching the video when it came out on MTV, and no one could figure out he did that "move." You know the one! It was only after MJ's passing that some choreographers explained how he did it. But even with the explanation, you have to be a PERFECT dancer (same steps on the same place of the stage - every time) for it to work. Simply amazing. FYI, if you want an exceptional explanation of how he sung so "high," check out Wings of Pegasus's video here: ua-cam.com/video/CWP_mSlKK-c/v-deo.html Surprisingly, his voice wasn't super high, just super "thin." Wings explains it better than I can. Definitely worth a watch since you're already an MJ fan.

      The TLDR for those who don't know, there would be a mark on the stage where a rod would extend into a special slot made into MJ's and the dancer's shoes that would keep them from toppling over during the lean...and yeah, you would have to be right on the spot with perfect timing or A) the rod won't catch it you're too far off or B)you mis-time it, the audience sees the rod and gives away the trick...

    I once read that Michael was a fifth degree black belt, and some of his moves come from this. As a former martial arts student, I can see where some of his routines seem to be adaptations of what we called 'forms'. Other styles call them 'katas', and I'm not sure I spelled that right. But anyway, yeah, I can see that much of the time, he seems to be doing martial arts forms to music. Especially when the kicks, and the arm throws are incorporated. So it's like kick, strike, grab, pull, strike.....etc. So of course I don't know if what I read was true, but I definitely see martial arts forms in his routines.
