I was waiting on the latest edition of World's Finest video but this haul of comic book adventure is a great substitute. The writer of the James Bond newspaper comic strip also created the Friday Foster newspaper comic strip which was adapted as a movie starring Pam Grier. James Bond also featured in an edition of DC Showcase which adapted Dr. No.
The Dracula adaptation is new to me and I've read a lot of adaptations of Stoker's novel. Binder was a well known pulp SF writer and McWilliams had a long career, working for many comics publishers and on many newspaper strips; and his art on Dracula looks magnificent. Captain Marvel got really good when Jim Starlin took over art and writing; Byrne's FF run is classic. Errr, it's Black Goliath (Bill Foster) in fact, Michael; he had a very short 5-issue series of his own in the 1970s. I am always awed by the sheer number of books and trades/omnibuses (omnibi?) you acquire, and even more that you find the time to read them all. Yes please, I vote for more graphic novel haul videos.
Nice! Do you read some Phillippe Druillet comics? I think the space opera cosmic extravaganza totally suits you. The 6 voyages of Lone Sloane is awesome
Ok I think you’re only a year or so older than me based on when you were talking about the Byrne run on FF. When you started showing the epic 90’s books, I was looking at them thinking ‘I still have a lot of them in a box somewhere’. Either way good haul and happy reading.
I know you and Steve joke about your low numbers for Comic Book Wednesday, but I’ve watched every week for years, and dearly love it. The end with tail-end Jim Lee X-men however has me really excited - I’ve been dying to finally see you and Steve get into the X-men comics, Dark Phoenix, Chris Claremont’s long run, Frank Miller’s Wolverine 1-4 mini-series, etc. please consider this a formal request! :)
Thanks for an injection of comics. Unless I get word that today has become a snow day at work. I am unlikely to get any comics reads in this week. My at home reading has been spent on my prose novel reads to keep February from being a complete failure as far as completing reads goes. People can say what they will about Byrne's writing but in that Fantastic Four run thought he had one of the best origin story takes on Dr Doom during his run. Pretty brave taking on Wolverine there. I stay out of it but people argue about first appearance of Wolverine in some comic circles. Some point to an ad in a Daredevil comic as his first appearance along with the whole Hulk 180 or 181. Never been much of a reader of Ant-Man/Giant Man but was wondering if who I know as Black Goliath had a different name at some point or somehow Robert E Howard got put in to this vid with 'Black Colossus'. I know with X-Men being the juggernaut it was could see Claremont or someone asking for a characters name to be changed.
Early 90s X-Men comics were awesome. I have a lot of that John Byrne FF stuff as well, only my reprints come in the Marvel Visionaries series. Fun vid. We need these just so Roger can have some sort of book haul adventure.
Excellent Video, Michael. The Daredevil Movie was very good in my opinion, even though most critics disregarded it. Much better than Superman Returns, to be honest. What does Roger say in this respect? By the way, I caught sight of Nova alongside Spider-Man when you were reviewing Spider-Man in this episode. Nova is one of the closest superheroes to my heart. Your comic book Wednesday is very important to me. Have a great day Michael
Phew .. something about comics, the world is not ending (quite yet). Thats some haul, I like that deluxe Aquaman book, very nice .. which shouldn't be a shock, its classy old stuff, surprised it was published and still available .. because their reprint program sucks. The Dracula looks fun, its probably that EC Horror artist. Deceptive 007 book, an omnibus disguised as a coffee table book, those spies and their disguises. Invaders, thats on my wants list, I read some of those issues in tatty old comics from the second hand books shops back in the mists of time. Fun. An armful of Epics, read some of the Ant-Man - theyre entertaining. Thats a good volume of X-Men. Looking forward to Generation X volume 3 later this year.
Great haul. I noticed the title of that X-men epic collection just said “X-Men,” but when you showed the inside, there was an issue of Uncanny in there. Is that collection a mix of Uncanny X-men and the plain old “X-Men” that came out in the 90’s?
Byrne was the first writer/artist who seemed to realise that Susan Richards was easily the most powerful member of the FF. You should find, read, and make a comic book Wednesday video about the ME Enterprises Captain Marvel. There were only 6 issues, and they were a classic example of so bad they're good! He was called Black Goliath back when I read them.
Wow, big haul. I'd love to have some of those. I wondered if you'd read the Jim Rugg Grand Design Hulk. I'd heard it was interesting. There's a Namor, Sub-Mariner Epic Collection coming out soon, if it's not out already.
Thank you for drawing my attention to the James Bond omnibus. I have just discovered that the woke mob (i.e. sensitivity readers) are now going through Ian Fleming's books with a fine-toothed comb so as the content will not offend modern readers. Much like they did with Dr. Suess, and just a week or so ago, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory author, Roald Dahl, the easily offended are once again going through a deceased author's creations and selectively editing anything and everything they don't like. So I have just ordered all 6 JB omnibuses - I'm not even a big fan, but I just want to have them before they potentially disappear.
"Captain Marvel" was inspired by the concepts and characters in the "Fantastic Four", but I assume that Stan Lee must have created him on his own, because Gene Colan did the art, but it would have been much better with Jack Kirby. The new "Captain Marvel" with Gil Kane's different but modern style and Dan Adkins zippy inking accompanying Roy Thomas's succinct script, was really cool though. The new costume was better than his old one, that looked too militaristic, but the new one made him look like a typical Marvel superhero and also more lithe and younger. It was unfortunate that the comic book was cancelled very soon afterwards. Marvel thought that if anybody deserved to have a character with that name, it should be them, but of course, the name was Mar-vell. Have you read the 1977 "Dr Strange" annual with Marv Wolfman and Craig Russell? As I remember it, I thought at the time, that it was one of the best issues of the comic book ever.
DC really flubbed things by not hanging onto the Captain Marvel rights. Not just for the comics either, they could have called the Shazam movie "Captain Marvel" and made Marvel fume.
So.....I'm starting to think that when you finally finish the 500-book challenge, you're going to have to start the 500-comics challenge. ;-)
I definitely want to see more comic hauls! Love seeing the eclectic mix of comics you end up with. Compliments to Roger on the ordering.
He is very skilled at spending money.
Awesome! I would love more comic hauls!

Yes we always want to see more comic book stuff from ya!!! Thanks for the vids!!!
Don't blame Roger for the phone! What would a mummy know about cell phones? Did you think there was telecom in ancient Egypt? 😆
Dracula looks amazing, b&w artwork and the cover! 🔥 🔥

Mark Bagley is one of my favorite Spider-Man artists. Do more graphic novel videos - I enjoy the strolls down memory lane.

Lone Slone is great and the English editions are ridiculously cheaper than any Marvel/DC omni
What great stuff. Envious.
That Dracula adaptation looks promising. You remind me that I need to get some EC comics collections.
I've failed the 1 book challenge twice in a row! I can't help it that I live a mile away from a used books store. 😂
Never heard about Black Colossus - now I need a MCU Black Colossus film by Tarantino!
# 7 here...keep the comics com'n !
There's only one Captain Marvel and his name is Billy
Very nice group of books. I thought I was on the wrong day yesterday when neither you nor Steve Donahue did a comic book video.
I do wanna see another - but only if it has War comics 🤭🤭

Yeah, I screwed up Black Goliath’s name. Been a while since I read those comics!
thanks

Have not read Rugg’s Hulk.
Come on Michael, we all know roger’s favorite Marvel hero has to be Moon Knight….
Yes, Moon Knight definitely! I should torture Steve Donoghue and talk about him soon.
I look forward to Wednesday comic book day. Glad you redeemed yourself sir 😑🤗
Nice comics video! Always happy to see them! I was reading Amazing Spider-Man in the 90s. Not sure what you mean by a comic being “very 90s”.
Let’s just say 90s artwork is instantly recognizable as being from the 90s!

Hi, Michael! I have the original paperback book . The panels are printed sideways with 2 or 3 panels per page.
Thanks! I was really curious about that!
@@michaelk.vaughan8617 You're very welcome!
Herb Trimpe is my favorite Hulk artist. It's Black Goliath by the way. You're always in REH mode. 😆
Yeah, I goofed on poor Black Col…er.. Goliath!
@@michaelk.vaughan8617 Black Colossus sounds like a cool super hero name though.

@@michaelk.vaughan8617 I thought you would have read it and liked it. It's really very many years ago that I read it, but it's stayed in the mind.
You mean Black Goliath. Black Colossus is a short story by Robert E. Howard.
I did. Sorry Black Goliath fans!
DC really flubbed things by not hanging onto the Captain Marvel rights. Not just for the comics either, they could have called the Shazam movie "Captain Marvel" and made Marvel fume.
