He’s possibly the nicest man I’ve ever met. He once threw a no hitter in 1994 for the Toledo mud hens and he had a meet n greet at the little Caesar’s right around the corner from my house and I was just 8 years old but he sat and talked with my dad and I for at least 15 min. I still have the autographs he gave me from that day.

such a cool guy. I grew up about 10 minutes from Shea stadium, and he had some family friends that knew my friend's dad, and lived a few blocks away from where my friend and I did. One day the Astros were in town, and my friend's dad asks if we want to meet Jose Lima. We say of course, thinking he had Mets tickets, which was very in-character for him. 15 minutes later, Jose Lima was in his friend's house in Queens, smoking a fat cigar, dressed in a silk shirt, on a giant leather couch, hanging and watching a Cubs game with three 11 year old kids that he had zero relation to. Its an old memory, but I think he actually chilled with us for about 45 minutes, breaking down what he liked about whoever was pitching in the game that was on. How many mlb players are doing that?
Lima nearly got into a car accident with me speeding out of Kauffman Stadium after a start with the Royals in the early-2000's. I loved him, he was a wild dude.

During thatt 2004 season with the dodgers he would sit at the top of the dugout before every game and sign autographs for all the kids. I remember staying in line for about half hour before the game as a kid. He was an amazing person and I still have his autographed baseball on display in my room.
He did the same during the High School CIF championship game that year, he was super nice to all the fans and watched the game. Great guy.

Jose Lima was genuinely crazy in a positive way. I watched him give up a home run at Busch Stadium, then point at the hitter all the way around the bases and scream at him (apparently he was infamous for being like... wildly positive but aggressive?)... then he started screaming at the ball in his hand.
i was at his final MLB game July 7 of 2006(?). younger me hated him for giving up a grand slam to dontrelle willis on my birthday lol but in retrospect he was such an electric and likable player, i’m glad i got to experience Lima Time for myself. RIP Jose
it's so cool to see the perspective shift as you get older from "they didn't do good" to "I'm just really glad I saw them do their thing." My first live Tony Ferguson fight I watched was when his career ended; sat badly for a bit but now I'm glad I was there for it

Lima was one of the nicest and humblest players. I used to see him while on vacation in the Dominican Republic, and he never failed to say hi to me, even though he didn't know me. One December, I was at a club with my girlfriend, and he and his girlfriend or wife invited us to a huge New Year’s Eve party at his house. Stories like mine are all over the Dominican Republic. His love for the game, music, and life was so immense that I believe deep down he knew he would have a short life. Always remember Lima!
Dominican here. The day Lima died was a national tragedy. Dude was not only hilarious and unique, he was a pillar of the community everywhere he went and poured his heart out pitching no matter the level. He was as intense in DWL as he was in the Majors. Loved the guy even though he pitched for the archrival of my DWL team.

Believe it! I was at that 2004 playoff game. I don't think Dodger stadium has ever been more electric than that game. He had a spell on the crowd and the Cardinals that night. The crowd went crazy when he came out for the 9th inning everyone went nuts. Even through Eric Gagne with 45 saves that year was in the bullpen. What a night! The only catch was the hour and half long wait to get out of the parking lot. RIP Lima Time

I was at a friend house right there in El Sereno watching the game and the stadium lights . Even at TV was exciting!
Not many if there is any videos of Lima. But the guy was energizing. As a Dominican myself he was always in the same mood no matter the moment, even in the winter league in DR after being beaten up, he kept his humor and personality above all. Glad to see he is remembered as you showed us here.

As I kid I rember going to see him as a dodger and lima time being huge. I did not realize he was only there for one season, shows how big of an impact he made that years later I still remember him as a dodger.
Let me tell you something, i saw Reds/Astros July 2nd, 1999 at Cincinnati. It was 120 degrees in the shade that day. Still one of the hottest days I've ever seen. Pre-game all the players were in the clubhouse. Only 1 player had the guts to be out there signing autographs. It was Jose Lima. RIP Jose.

Had the pleasure of meeting and talking to him during a Royals Giants game in San Francisco back in 2005. I was 7. My parents and I were sitting behind the visitors on deck circle. When he was up next he said he’d give me a ball if I didn’t boo him when he went up to bat 😂 gave me a ball the very next inning. Insanely kind guy. It’s tragic he was taken from us so soon. Thanks for the ball, Jose.
As an lifelong Astros fan and Houstonian, I really appreciate you spotlighting one of our folk heroes... And yeah, that Casa Ole commercial was the earworm that wouldn't leave and can be sung by every person who was around during Lima Time!
That 2000 season with the 'Stros nearly destroyed his career. That's the year he went from pitching in the old Astrodome- where home runs went to die- to the little league ballpark formerly known as Enron Field. I was sad when he left Houston, and of course, when he passed away. I'll never forget how fun Lima Time was and still have his autographed baseball in my office.
A co worker of mine was on the grounds crew at Comerica Park while he was with the Tigers and would have a new awesome story about this man after every game. A true legend.
Thursday, May 13, 2004?! I was there with my classmates at Dodger Stadium as a 12-year-old!!! We only stayed there for 90 minutes as we need to go back to school before we go back home.
**On a footnote, it was also the same day that Derek Fisher made that 0.4 second game-winning basket at San Antonio.
Another fantastic video. I love watching these videos about players i grew up watching. A lot of the stuff i knew but wasn't really able to put into proper perspective. I remember Lima time very well but never fully appreciated him the way i should've though.
What a great retrospect. I remember Lima as one of those guys that I hated seeing on the mound against my favorite team. He was a damn good pitcher in his MLB years. Wish we had more time to see him bring his energy to the world at large after his retirement.

Really though, it's the lack of smugness that made it work at the time. A lot of the complaints for the sort of expressive behaviors that are becoming common today have to do with how showy it tends to be. Lima didn't come across as a show-off because he was just that genuinely cheery and energetic by default, and that's a lot easier to respect (especially in those moments where the performance doesn't back it up).

I met him during his time with the dodgers. He stopped to sign autographs by the players parking lot and we just hit it off. He left me and my family tickets at will call for over 60 games. A true legend of the game and a better person! Rest easy my friend
Jose Lima was the most entertaining player on the Astros in the 90s. I loved watching him pitch and his attitude! The Astros in those times was so boring and muted and when we had Lima he gave this team life. RIP Jose Lima , you were a one of a lifetime player and we should honor you!!!❤
Its only an issue when the celebration is about showing up the opponent. Pointing, staring, gesturing towards them, that kind of thing. Cause thats going to be taken as a challenge every time. But if you're psyched cause you did something awesome celebrate your ass off imo. The line is kind of grey, but theres still a line. Lima never crossed it imo. I always respected the national anthem thing for some reason. I think I loved it because it was so authentic, it was not a bit. He really loved America and was proud of himself for making it to MLB.. its so pure.

I remember Adam Dunn sending a Lima pitch completely out of the Reds Stadium, dead center field, that ended up stuck on a piece of driftwood at the edge of the Ohio River. It was so high and far I thought I saw the 82nd Airborne jumping from it.

I played in his merengue band here in Houston. Once , when I was taking my grandpa to radiation treatment, I saw him there with his dad. He told me that he prayed to God to heal his dad and he would give up his baseball career. I told him that God would never ask him to do that. But that’s just the kind of dude he was. R.I.P. Lima Time!

When he played for the astros he would throw out stuffed souvenir balls before every home game. I was lucky enough to get one of then when I was like 10. I'll never forget it.
To be fair, that pitcher he gave up the grand slam to was Marlins legend Dontrelle Willis.
He got excited when he did well because other than two season he was just lucky to be on the roster. And I think we can all relate to that

I haven't heard this name since I was a teenager, but the way lima played would probably be more suited to today's game. He was must watch tv, some for his skill the other for his intangibles.

Y’all know “Lima time” was a reference to a beer commercial from the 90’s. It was called Zima, and their ads would say “it’s Zima time”
I remember seeing him play with his band at Sullivan around 1999 or later ? Pretty green eyes and fabulous singer musician
He and the Licey team from the dominican league had the craziest battles. I as a fan of Licey celebrated when we beated him, but always recognized his charisma and laughed at his antics.
I watched him play in Detroit AND later in South Korea. I lived in the same city that he played in, Gwangju, and he had quite the following there in his short time. A character like that is going to stand out anywhere he goes.

I dont recall anyone having a problem with Lima. The things he did werent in anyones face. A little slide step here and there. He only really got animated when he got out of a pressure situation. It probably helped that he was well liked.

Biggio and bagwell speaking out against it doesn't surprise me though. If it actually was a problem they would've been the players the opposition might have retaliated against.
@@JLJbaseball José Lima was my favorite pitcher of that era, everyone knew the personality, even folks that didn’t follow baseball here in Houston. But Bagwell and Biggio were too damn salty all the time, and they did not like teammates being showy on the baseball diamond.
I can see Bagwell liking Jose Lima, because he was such a likable person. But, that doesn’t mean that his on the field celebration was viewed favorably by his teammates.
I appreciate Altuve for being a down to Earth leader of the Astros. He doesn’t come about as overly critical of his teammates, regardless of how they express themselves.

Every time we would try to get autographs before his astros games, he would show up and sit everything. We had so many baseballs with just his signature😆

There are some many stuff you don't know about him, he was also a mambo player, a type of merengue that was just starting at that time. He also used to have a Donald the duck statue in front of his house and he used to paint it.
