As a hospital lab tech, hearing him say that they aren't required to have a certified lab with real lab techs is sad but not surprising when we've been facing a huge shortage for almost a decade now. The last I saw was that we have about 7000 job openings each year but only about 3-4000 new techs graduating. Maybe if we can turn colleges into educational systems and not a corporation of profiting off of the hopes and despair of the poor we might be able to catch up.

My dad in the early 2000's was approached by a company to hire him while he was already employed but they offered much more money to do the same job. He took the offer and put in his two week notice. He then the next day was told he had signed a non compete clause and he couldn't take the new job nor would he still be employed by his current employer. This lead to him being unemployed for over a year and almost losing our house to foreclosure. Not really from a geopolitical standpoint. Bytedance has a lot of ties to the CCP and is based in China. Given the party's "Anti-Corruption" laws, the party can swarm the business anytime. This give the party reach to watch and influence people overseas through Bytedance and TikTok. There are no private companies under the CCP. It's a large reason why miHoyo, the company responsible for Genshin Impact and Honkai: Star Rail moved it's HQ to Singepore - to avoid CCP influence... Also to make sure the "pretty boy" character designs stay that way rather than being forced to change it since it didn't fit the party's standards.

In 2022, my department was downsized due to company restructuring and over-hiring during the pandemic. During layoffs, HR presented our signed non-compete agreements, reminding us we couldn't work for a direct competitor or existing/potential clients for a year. In my very niche market, this significantly limited my job options. Ironically, the entire market took a downturn around the same time. It took me a full year to find a new position. Now, at my new job, I face a similar non-compete, but with an even longer restriction!
While I understand companies want to prevent employees from immediately joining competitors, enforcing non-competes on laid-off workers feels unfair. It's like being punished twice - losing your job and then being restricted from finding a new one in your field.

I got a job at another store in town for an extra two days of work because I needed money due to mounting debt and no other places accepting me. I told her that my schedule had changed to accommodate. After her forcing to tell her where I applied and nearly forcing me to leave, I had to turn down the new job due to the noncompete clause. Those clauses shouldn’t exist for people who just need to get by and can’t get enough money to make ends meet. Who cares what other store I work at, just let people show up and do their job and go home. Thankfully I left there soon after and am much happier where I’m at.

And because it is small the pay is crap. But if he wanted to go to another clinic nearby to get paid more, he has to wait 5 years from when he leaves. That means moving again and ripping our kids away from the only stability they have had. We went through a lot and he works very hard. You shouldn't take the secret sauce recipe and tell the competitor. I'm also not against non-compete clauses, but someone on a non-compete clause should stay on payroll at their salary as part of their severance for the duration of their non-compete. If the company doesn't want to pay, then they can have the option to withdraw/dissolve the non-compete clause at the time of the employee's dismissal. I say that because I wouldn't want a company to sabotage work opportunities and then drop the non-compete when its the least convenient to the employee.

At my previous job, I collaborated with scientists and engineers for three years to investigate PFAS. We focused on the remediation techniques and potential alternatives to PFAS products, specifically fire foams. There is a lot I could talk about, but I want to focus on Logan's conflict and clarify some things. PFAS is a group of 430+ chemicals, including well-known ones like PFOA, PFOS, and Teflon. These chemicals can be found on cookware surfaces, in storage plastics, and other products that can leach into food, water, air, and soil. Focusing on Logan's issue, it is possible he could use fluorinated plastics; these plastics can leach PFAS chemicals into food products but at minimal concentrations. Not all processes in America ban the use of PFAS and there are no bans on imports that contain PFAS chemicals. So, stay away from cheap Chinese cookware. Current regulations by the EPA allow for specified levels of PFAS concentration in products, varying by each PFAS chemical and there isn't a set limit for all PFAS chemicals. The limits are scattered around, but about 6 to 14 chemicals have limits. For PFOS and PFOA, the limit is 4.0 ppt, and current measurement techniques approved by the EPA can detect levels as low as 0.5 ppt.
YES, PFAS chemicals can cause health effects, including increased cholesterol levels affecting the heart, reduced antibody response to vaccines, changes in liver enzymes, adverse effects on infant birth weights, and the potential for kidney and testicular cancer (NOT lymphoma), particularly associated with PFOA. In my personal experience, I have had elevated cholesterol levels during my exposure to PFAS, but I can’t confirm that was the cause. However, these health risks manifest over prolonged exposure to much much higher concentrations, and research has also concluded that. This is the reason for the EPA’s limit on PFAS concentrations. This also means you can't have one bottle of PRIME containing PFAS chemicals and get cancer the next day.
Keep in mind that there are investigations on PFAS concentrations in the US water supply throughout the us. A large project that monitors this is the NOVA project. Unfortunately. For all Americans, there is some concentration of PFAS within all water sources throughout the US, and the EPA has a detailed map of concentrations of PFAS throughout the United States. Now, there can be an argument about how many measurements the state has provided or conducted for PFAS, but regardless, there is PFAS detection across the board. And even though states do have limits until they will pursue a company, the EPA has designated 9 PFAS chemicals as hazardous, including PFOA and PFOS, which will change how businesses can use the chemical and what rules they can follow. If you want to know more, I have replied to this comment with links to more information.

I think it's an insane statement from the US CoC to state that banning non-competes will incentivize businesses to not put in effort to develop internal employees because that's already the reality. I'm personally an elder millennial in blue collar work and my experience has essentially been that unless you move jobs every 2-5 years you are actively punished with a lower salary and benefits than your value added to an organization. Employers will hire new employees at just below or at the same level as current employees with years/decades more experience and then wonder why their retention rates are in the gutter. Company loyalty made sense when companies were loyal to their employees with good pensions, benefits, retirement plans. They haven't been in 20+ years and these new rules are simply helping to level the power dynamic in the labor market.

Regarding trade secrets, there's another tool called a Non-Disclosure Agreement. An NDA doesn't stop you from working wherever you want, but if you disclose the info you agreed not to, you're open to some potentially massive penalties. Also, if your industry finds out you don't honour an NDA, other companies won't hire you.

    • @IdealConscience
      @IdealConscience 13 днів тому +2

Another part of trade secrets is that you should actually pay those employees who are involved in company secrets incredibly well. Not good... Incredibly well. It was always the case to do that until "NDA" meant that companies can pay $70k salaries to crucial employees.

You know, the threat that your employees could leave for a better position with your competitor should be INCENTIVE to better train and treat your employees well. One of the worst experiences is being in a workplace where you aren't given the tools to do your job and corporate obviously doesn't care, it's what makes you want to leave. Also, why would you hire employees and then just NOT train them? Your business will only suffer even if they do stick around. It's all just a capitalist tantrum over being told you actually have to keep competitive wages and a good work culture in your industry in order to keep employees around.

The non-compete stuff hits home for me. Last year, I moved states for work. After 9 months, management and I mutually agreed that the position wasn't right for me and I left. Fresh out of college, I had nowhere to go because all the places who could use my degree were blocked by the non-compete clause in my contact. Had to move back home and my current job has the same clause.
Literally everyone at my job let out a sigh of relief when we heard the news. It's something that hangs over your head, knowing you could be fired and be barred from doing what you love in your own community.

    1. Different PFAS chemicals require different treatment methods and a pilot study would have to take place to see if they are being effectively removed.
    2. PFAS is in literally everything, not just the “plastic bottles”. It is rampant throughout our world because it was excessively used in many, many products and they stick around for a very long time. Just because it’s in so many things and likely other processed drinks, doesn’t mean we shouldn’t try to remove it.
    3. The EPA just adopted a set of MCLs for some PFAS chemicals. There are thousands of PFAS chemicals and now there is a maximum contaminant level for 6 of them. If you want more info about it, I suggest you look those up and it will explain a lot of how all this works.

  • @danielscottlive2081

I love that more mainstream attention is coming to PFAS!
I work for a company that specifically treats PFAS in water, and while I can't speak to the specific claims of the Prime lawsuit, Logan is absolutely right, both about the pervasiveness of PFAS and how hard it is to detect. They are absolutely everywhere, and while we have known that they are harmful for several decades now, they were not specifically designated as hazardous chemicals by the EPA until very recently, as in TWO WEEKS AGO. So just because companies may have PFAS in their water supplies, that does not mean they are breaking any rules. Most of the regulations do not go into effect for a few years. He is also right about how hard it is to get accurate readings on specific levels of PFAS. When you're dealing with levels as low as we are with PFAS, in the parts per trillion or even parts per quadrillion, it is incredibly difficult to get an accurate reading. When we test our streams, will send the same samples out to get tested multiple times and come back with results that are several decimal places different from each other. One of the biggest difficulties is that we know that even extremely low levels are very harmful, and yet with the current technology, it is incredibly hard to detect just how much is in each sample.
I am not a fan of Logan Paul AT ALL, but in this specific case, it appears he's done a lot more research than many people making claims against Prime.

They are making a LOT of money on Prime and having rumors and claims like this floating around would likely have a significant impact on their bottom line. Would it hurt them long term? Probably not but we could be talking millions of dollars in lost revenue.
I'm not saying that the claims are false or anything like Logan Paul definitely telling the truth here, it's just that when you have large amounts of money on the line, it's a logical move. Great Dr, patients loved him. when his contract was up though, he wasnt allowed to take a job at the other major hospital in town.
