I'm so happy you covered this, Khan. I recall reading that some major US electoral candidates who shall remain nameless didn't know the difference between North and South Korea. How can you decide major policy when you don't know basic world history and the names of your allies/enemies?

This is how I learned it. When the two Koreas were separated, it was the start of the Cold War. The Soviets wanted to spread their influence anywhere they could. United States, and U.N. (mainly U.S.) could not stand to see Communism spreading. Plus Korean's peninsula was seen as a bridge that connects Japan to rest of Asia. Even other parts of history: Mongolians, several Chinese empires, Japan empire and ect invaded the Korean peninsula as sort of a gateway. It's really sad.

This is excellent. I'm Korean so I approve this. ^^ Not many ppl know how brutal this war had been. Just kinda heard there was a war at one point in history in some small asian country. But in fact more ppl died during those three years than the whole Vietnam War. Let's face it. The cold war isn't over yet. F^%in' Sucks.

    Frontier/Wild West Era
    Crusades
    Spanish Inquisition
    Israeli-Palestinian Conflict
    Sino-Soviet Split
    Soviet Invasion of Afghanistan
    Bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki
    Space Race
    Fall of Communism
No one ever explained these things to me growing up and they're important, I wish these had been around.

China has been on the UNSC since the beginning. However, the initial Chinese seat was occupied by the Republic of China which kinda got defeated in 1949 and retreated to Taiwan where they still are to this day. Meanwhile, the People's Republic of China, although encompassing 97% of the Chinese population was not recognised by the UN as a legal nation until 1971. Thus, in 1950, it was the ROC that had the Chinese seat, not the current day PRC and the ROC is on the side US side.

Sal, just a small correction. Gen. MacArthur did not want to bomb across the Yalu, he wanted to bomb the bridges on the Yalu. Also in 51 the USSR was losing interest in this war which upset Mao for many years. For any of your viewers who are interested in the landing at Inchon I recommend they read the American Caesar. It will give a lot of insight into Gen. MacArthur - the good and the bad. Too bad history is mainly about wars and tyrants on all sides. :P

Hi, Sal. Can I request? Can you make a long video or combine multiple videos to one and arrange mutually exclusive timelines paralleled so we get to understand the whole world history in just one video? Because some of the incidents would be connected to each other and it is difficult already to align your history videos and mentally connect the dots. It would make things a lot easier for us or at least for me If I am not being too selfish, Thank you! And please keep uploading your videos......!

My father was sent there around July 4th, through the Pusan perimeter out to the front line, (Taejon?). They retreated to around Namwon where a 2nd line was formed? Then later retreated again back to Naktong River. He was one of them that spear headed through( Punched through N, Korean Line) the U.S. pushed the N. Koreans until they retreated in which time, the group that spear headed had gotten captured by retreating N. Koreans and was a MIA, KIA, POW until around end of October. See 2nd part.

Just a suggestion- but I would love if you did most of the major & minor history of the world since the Scientific Revolution. Then, pre-Galilean history could be delved into. But to understand where we are today, the crucial period of understanding is the one in which most people lack true historical perspective...from Copernicus to Einstein...
Keep it up Mr. Khan. Every video you put out is an achievement for education. An immortal several minutes of information.

The Soviet army disguised itself as a North Korean air force and limitedly deployed only north of Pyongyang, and did not provide air support even though Chinese troops were destroyed by the U.S. Air Force near the 38th parallel. The U.S. also sensed the presence of Soviet air force, but ignored it and moved on. However, the Soviet Union provided a large amount of weapons to North Korea and the Chinese Communist Party.

Excellent video. I've also watched Bruce Cumings two parts on the Korean War. It's very good, too.
I have extra interest in that war since my father was at Koje-do POW camp. He said it was a horror. Americans and the other U.N. forces were not prepared for the massive number of POWs they had. (Koje suddenly had a 175,000 or so prisoners.) And, the communists and anti-communists were at each others' throats, literally--executions at night when the guards wouldn't go in the compounds. A horror.

2nd Part - He was in what was knowin as the Nam Won Barefoot Death March and was marched up passed Seoul (Seen the burning of Seoul) into N. Korea up passed the Capital. They would get stoned, beat, gun butted, interogated etc. There food consisted of fish heads and rice patties. He also always said the Chinese soldiers were a lot nicer to them then N. Koreans were as they would give them actual food, cigarettes, coffee etc. He always said he wished there was more of that, but there wasn't.

    The Korean war abridged:
    1 Koreans freed from Japanese
2 North Korea (Communists, lead by Kim Il Sung) attacks Southern Korea
3 US+allies (European, South Korean) pushes up to China
4 US+allies pulled down from China
5 US+allies pushed to center Korea
6 War is called ceasefire, Korea is bitterly separated+their people massacred
7 Another crapload of people died because of patriotism, ideologies (Communist/Capitalist), and imperialism.

@SPQRomantic Mahalo for the reply, Romantic. Of course you are correct about American presidents. My reply to you was motivated by the criticism of Sal's minor, rather off hand remark, not intended to be a criticism of Stalin so much as an attempt to tie what was going on in Korea with what was going on in the rest of the world. Things that mattered much more to the Soviets were playing out in Europe at the time. Likewise, the U.S. had used the nuclear weapon on Japan and Stalin didn't have it.

  • @jstasiak2262
    @jstasiak2262 3 роки тому

Very important point: The Communist Chinese army that fought in the Korean war (“People’s Volunteer Army”, PVA) in 1950 was originally formed for the purpose of conquering Taiwan. The Chinese Communists had just defeated the Chinese Nationalist Kuomintang (KMT) in the Chinese civil war. The KMT retreated to Taiwan with the intent of regrouping and conquering the mainland. Mao wanted to totally defeat the KMT and conquer Taiwan and was getting ready to do so.
Unfortunately for Mao, that pip-squeak Kim il Sung. messed up in Korea and the Americans under MacArthur were charging toward China’s southern border. Mao did not want the Americans on China’s southern border, so he re-purposed the PVA to eject the Americans from Korea.
The important point is that if it wasn’t for the Korean war, there is a good likelihood that Taiwan would have been conquered by Mao’s Communists in the 1950s.

A lot of people are politely asking for the Sea of Japan to be changed to the East Sea and are getting yelled at. It's just what they're taught, people. That's what they learn and that's the way they see it. Maybe if it could be changed to say "Sea of Japan/East Sea", then we would all be happy.
