    ALSO, hi! It has been a long 3 months but now that my cancer treatment is (hopefully) over, I have enough energy to get back to making Vsauce3 videos! Incredibly happy to be making again and so happy to have you here watching! You're pretty darn awesome.

    Vsauce is the type of channel to explain something and then leave me with more questions then answered.

    • @eliteextremophile8895
      @eliteextremophile8895 7 років тому +27

      Best kind of explanations are the ones resulting in more questions. If something is 'definite' there's no problems to solve, thus there's nothing to evolve to. For example. If I say that "rock is a rock and it consists of rock" and leave it to that. If everyone is happy with the answer and do not ask any more questions, the potential of a rock remains unsolved.

      Lie =/= paradox

    • @georgemcgovern21
      @georgemcgovern21 7 років тому +107

      Okay. So the first sentence states that the second sentence is true, and the second sentence states that the first sentence is false. So if the first sentence says that the second sentence is true, but is proved false, that means the second sentence is true, meaning the first sentence is false and the second sentence is true.

    This isn't a paradox but cool to think about
    If you were to tell a story about everything you did today down to every detail would go on forever
    Why?
    Because you would tell about your day and eventual get to the part about you telling a story and then repeat it again and again

    • @TheSecondVersion
      @TheSecondVersion 6 років тому +139

      In Neil Gaiman's sandman, there's a book that contains the ENTIRE story of the universe, describing everything that happens in it from its creation to its very end. However, no one is allowed to consult it to see the future, because then the book would become part of its own story. It would have to describe what it is describing, and so on and so forth.

    • @DoesItMatterAtAll
      @DoesItMatterAtAll 6 років тому +54

      Assuming an infinite time-span, sure, it's a nice thought about recursion, but the day ends, and as the day does, so do the daily events, making the story not infinite, just (potentially, depending on how fast you recount the story, and the daytime at which you started) very meta.

      not really its just impossible cuz ur telling things that happened today. at 23:59:59 you have to stop writing and since you cant write about future, your story about "yesterday" was almost complete, but unfinished
      its not a paradox

      I clearly understand paradoxes better than you if you believe that the first statement of a paradox has to be true. Paradoxes are never true to begin with. Matter a fact there is no such thing as a true paradox. Every paradox either starts with a make-believe scenario or a non-factually based assumption. If you truly believe that, you'd better google some paradoxes ...

      If replicated to the quantum level , it would still count as the original apartment.If you create quantum replicas if the objects in your apartment , they would logically exhibit the exact same features (at least from any measurable perspective) as the original objects. The original apartment and the quantum copy of your apartment would be analogous to a entangled pair of particles , where the copy is the original , but the original is also the copy.... Unless i am wrong of course...

    all of those paradoxes are basically crafted. they only exist within the framework of our symbol languages, but in fundamental reality, there are no symbols - no labeling, and since those paradoxes only arise when trying to label things, they are solely our creations. so in other words, coming up with those paradoxes is basically coming up with paradoxes for the sake of coming up with paradoxes... which I'd consider an endeavor with very little merit, but I guess we all have some strange hobbies, so no judging. ;)

    • @ZanderSabbag
      @ZanderSabbag 8 років тому +5

      I wouldn't say all of them fall under this category. I believe most are created because someone tries to find absolute truths about concepts that vary, which isn't possible. Some may consider the boat that was disconstructed the same as before, some won't, that a matter of perception and opinion. Although valid, to question what one considers as "the" something is a flawed question in cases such as these.
      I have to agree with you on the autologocal and heterological part though.

    • @jimlockeyarchive3198

      Yes. If there is something blocking the road, obviously the car in front would be "first". However, traffic jams when there are just too many cars on the road are caused by people slowing down. When one car slows down, it usually causes the car behind it to slow down and so on. When enough people have slowed down, traffic "backs up". Whoever the first person to stop is the first in the jam. Only get hets out of it very quickly, while the rest of the drivers behind him are screwed.

    • @SuperSethstone

      Yes. It's either one of the two cars in the accident who is first in the traffic jam. Or it's the very first car stopped in front of the accident.

      +Best Tastes can't a paradox be philosophical ? you know for as long as science has existed philosophy has accompanied it.. truly the field of logic is half mathematical and half philosophical. so I hope you're not thinking these paradoxes are vague and unscientific, they have strong implications in science.
      for example the ship of theseus, or what makes the identity of something. if you can't answer to that, how can you assume that two objects are identical ? then, how can you count them ? the very notion of counting things is to admit that they're identical. like 4 bananas is always 4 bananas. but in the real world, if you take 4 bananas and 4 other bananas, they will not be identical. in mathematics the equal sign hides a little secret : "equal" things don't necessarily mean things are identical, but that they can be reduced to identical properties. it's the nature (and extent) of this reduction that the ship of theseus tries to clarify.

      +Chris G It's not really a paradox it's just a vague word. If we come up we a minimum and maximum amount of items or volume to form a heap then it's just a range of amounts. It's like 6 cows are "several", if you add 1 it's still "several", if you add another it's still "several" until eventually you decide to cut the term to an arbitrary amount in which case it is now "many".

    • @chrisg3030
      @chrisg3030 8 років тому +2

      +vitorsly Sure, the paradox disappears when we put specific numbers to amounts. Counting with numbers must have originated as a smart way of making one amount distinguishable at a glance from another (or an amount at another time) which otherwise look pretty much the same. One heap looks like another, but 256 is obviously different from 257. Numbers are like a kind of magnifying glass for the present and a telescope for knowing the future. Trouble is I don't always want to know.

So I think a person who is broken down atom by atom and replaced completely is more the same person than someone who has no brain activity or multi personality or any number of things that could cause u to lose your identity

    This was something that came up today in a discussion with a friend(hence why I find myself here; I wanted to see other ideas about the "Ship of Theseus" paradox) and I gave my answer on the subject. My answer was that identity is a title given to a polymorphic collection of things and that collection of things comes with a signature. The signature being details about its composition and location in space and time, and the sub-things that make up the whole thing have their own identities formed by their own compositions and signatures(Call them sub-identities, sub-compositions, and sub-signatures). All of these properties combine to form the identity of the thing in question, such that as any one thing changes a new version is produced. Now while this identity versioning is constantly changing we don't always consider it. For example, an object might be version 1.0.0.0.0.0.0.0.0 and then a subtle change creates version 1.0.0.0.0.0.0.0.1 but to us it's just version 1.0 or even just version one. It's not until more significant changes occur, usually, that we begin to acknowledge a change in version; such as version one-point-two. In the case of being disintegrated in one location and reformed in another location perfectly we we have to acknowledge a significant amount of changes occurred in the signatures(again based on not just composition but space and time). Therefore a new version was produced. So to identify something as the original is entirely a matter of personal perspective because in reality we're not...

    A heap ceases to be a heap when its parts exist in a single layer, and when you can count them, or at least begin to count them and be confident that you can finish, at a glance.

    • @kolepage6863
      @kolepage6863 8 років тому +1

      Richard Collins when tho?

    • @k9kid991
      @k9kid991 8 років тому

      Ok, so if we started from that point that you just said: A single layer, you can count them, confident you can finish at a glance.... now just add ONE. SINGLE. Grain of sand to that, and it becomes a heap? One single grain of sand would really make that much of a difference? That's where the paradox comes in. You can never get to that defining moment when it transitions to a heap, because that means it's only one grain of sand different... which is barely noticable. =P

    • @rikuurufu5534
      @rikuurufu5534 8 років тому

      It's still not a heap to you, but it might be a heap to the next person.Or you might leave and come back, and re-evaluate your ability to count the grains, and find yourself a little intimidated. That exact point, the point at which anyone takes a fresh look at the sand after ONE. SINGLE. grain of sand has been added and concludes that they probably couldn't count the grains, is the point at which the heap is defined, especially if it's pushed together so that it's no longer in a single layer.

    • @k9kid991
      @k9kid991 8 років тому +2

      But still, let's say someone is at that point where they don't think they could count it, so they call it heap. If you tell them to close their eyes, and then you remove one single grain of sand, they won't even be able to tell the difference when they look again. They'll still call it a heap. Especially if you don't tell them if you actually took a grain away.

    • @neuronaut-666
      @neuronaut-666 7 років тому

      So how is this a paradox just because people can't agree on the number of grains of sand, which we can't count, make up a heap? "Heap" is a very general term, a visual one, one that I would say by definition is something that isn't counted.

    • @puteborddelux1309
      @puteborddelux1309 8 років тому

      Alexis Jasso well then that specific heap is no longer a heap, but the next time you take a handful of sand, that is a heap. A heap just means an amount of something that you don't know the exact quantity of, so considering the next handful of sand you take is not the exact same amount as the one you counted, it's a heap.

    • @dangdudei1506
      @dangdudei1506 8 років тому +1

      The size of a heap is determined by your perception of the world. It's you trying to apply scale to something uncountable (as in it is not practical to count it). It's not about how many grains a heap consists of, it's about how big the sandpile is compared to something else.
      We are all different and have different perceptions of things. So the very definiton of heap will vary from person to person.

    This is actually the reason why I have already decided that, if teleportation is developed during my lifetime, I will never use it. It might be possible that the person coming out is me in every way and no one could tell him apart from the person who went in, because they are identical, also with everything that goes on in their head, but regardless of that, I'm dead.
    I could end up in heaven after dying in the machine, looking down at myself leaving the other machine, or an identical copy of myself leaving the other machine.
    Obviously, this would be the best case scenarion. The worst case scenario is that everything is just over. I _cease_ to exist while this identical me takes my place, the last thing I ever do is enter the teleportation machine.
    No one could ever tell it happened, but it is possible. That's why I never want to do it.

    Here is the solution to the Grelling-Nelson paradox. The only classes of words that are autological are nouns. For example, to say that pronounceable is pronounceable is illogical because the adj. "pronounceable" is being treated as a noun. In other words, what you really mean is that the word "pronounceable" is pronounceable, not that pronounceable is pronounceable, which is incorrect syntax. The word heterological is an adjective, not a noun. Therefore, the phrasing of the problem breaks the rules of logical syntax

    Lets get a bit deeper into the last one: If you were scanned to rebuild you at another location ( teleportation) but not destroyed at your first location. With which brain would you think ? Are you two times the exact same person? And living in the exact same time? Would YOU control both bodies or only one ? And who is the other then?

    • @ny32ob35
      @ny32ob35 7 років тому +14

      think of it like two different laptops of the same model. They don't control each other and they are seperate entities but they have the capability to perform the same functions as eachother. depending on how you treat them, they change accordingly. In the teleportation machine, you would be killed off forever but the new you will be identical and have the same memories as before. No one else will know about your death as YOUR original consciousness will be destroyed but a copy would be kept in the "clone".

      memory-alpha.wikia.com/wiki/Second_Chances_(episode)
      There are two true "you" then.

      I think that the 'created one' would have the same memories as you, so he would think "I was teleported, the one that stay is a copy".
      You that stand in the same place would think "he is the copy".
      Your brain (player 1) will control you, and he would have another (player 1) that thinks you are the fake one

      GlobalGasp The teleported you wich is basically a clone is just like you. The clone would know he has been teleported and knows he's basically a clone because he knows you wanted to teleport yourself somewhere.
      The clone would be like you as if you were teleported to your destination. He would life exactly like you would do if you were there because he's like you but you don't know anything about his life there (unless you get a connection the normal way: telephone, chat, letters etc.). You're not somehow magically connected to him.
      You would just walked out of the teleportation/clone machine like nothing happened. Nothing on you would be changed but you would know there is a clone of you who knows everything you know.
      Tl:dr You're still you but the teleported you is also you until the moment he was created. At this point he's just like you but not actually you. The past of the clone before he was created was actually your past.

    I have made a sort-of paradox: go up to a friend or just someone you know and say you want to make a bet if they agree to the bet tell them that you bet something (probably money) that you will lose the bet. This way since nothing has happened as the bet was you will lose the bet, you have not lost which technically means you have won but the fact that you have won means you have lost and you are caught in a never-ending cycle.

      Better bet that you won't win the bet cause the fact you have no lose don't mean you won
