My wife and I opted to visit Versailles but paid only to go into the gardens and it was the best decision we ever made as tourists: no line, no pushing or crowds. Just lovely gardens and sculptures in what felt like unending twists and turns on a beautiful day.
Just got back from Auvers sur oise and was so IMPRESSED with how much help I received from not only the workers at the stations (esp. Monceau and Denfert) in getting the ticket $10 round trip! Especially appreciated the SNCF who helped me with going back to Paris, as well as running off the sketchy guys hanging out at the train station at Auvers. Wish there had been someone inside, but this guy was so sweet! Whoever said the French are rude or cold didn’t see what I did today. I was so grateful to all the lovely French folks who helped me have a wonderful day! Would have been much more difficult without these godsends!
After 2 day trips to Lille in 2022, I made the decision to invest in a studio apartment there and now spend 90 days at a time, with a trip to Paris every weekend. I often get my tickets for much less than 120 euros round trip; I’ve gone for as little as 32 round trip.
So glad you put this together. I’ve done the day trip to Reims and it is the perfect getaway from Paris. Tours is where I lived one summer while studying and we loved our weekend trips to Paris. It’s also in chateau country. I wouldn’t necessarily think of Mont Saint Michel or London as a day trip. London could be its own hub city from where you could take day trips. When we went to Mont St Michel we made it an overnight which I think is a lot more doable.
I would not consider many of these to be day trips - London, Brussels, Mount Ste. Michelle, Bordeaux, Lyon. These are worthy of their own trip but not from from Paris. I suppose if one were desperate to visit any of these, it might be OK, but I sure wouldn't do it. I would have even moved these to the end of the video with a note that they are best explored on their own. A few others such as the Loire, Strasbourg, Normandy also fall into this category as one day does not do them justice. But thanks nonetheless for putting this together your videos and trip hints are great.
Yeah I won't be going to London if I've made the trip to Paris especially just to go to Oxford street which is a dump. London should be a different trip. Was surprised to see it suggested on this list.
I appreciate you both so much! I'll be visiting Paris for the second time next March. Your recommendations (such as Hôtel Des Marronniers) are really helping me with the planning!
Bonjour! Bisous du Portugal! I'm Portuguese and I found your videos when I was preparing my 1st and probably only trip to Paris. Thank you very much for all the tips. Being Portuguese, I know that I have some advantages compared to your experience as Americans, as my culture is similar to the French. However, your entire experience was super important for me to feel less anxious. Many congratulations on your courage and journey as a family. Best wishes
Antoine and Colleen, thank you very much for this AMAZING video! This is undoubtedly the best video of the possible day trips from Paris on UA-cam. Please keep up your AWESOME work on your channel!😃😃😃👏👏👏👍👍👍
I really love your channel! I always enjoy seeing videos from you two. I would love to suggest some more videos of places to stay in France and visit regional area. I’ve actually been to Paris quite a few times and it’s cool but I really love seeing the villages the countryside, you know things like that. Getting to know what I would call the real France.
Merci Colleen et Antoine! Glad to see Auvers sur Oise on your list. Such a special place. Looking forward to going back and checking out some of the others!
I've been to these 10 destinatoons already and all i can say its worth every visit! Magnifique..beautiful places! Thanks Le frenchies for all your wonderful videos❤🇫🇷
What a great video ! superb hints for day-trips ! you are amazing gathering all these tips for trains & other accomodations - and ... you never miss out your lunch pause 😊 ! Bravo à vous deux ! toujours un plaisir de vous suivre ! 💕
We are planning to buy "un appart" à Tours in the next couple of years when we retire. We can't wait to have that launching off point for SO MANY great towns and cities all over France and neighboring countries! Great video!
Another super video guys! Would you consider making a video of beautiful small towns? I love how you put the prices and which trains to catch. Thank you
We had battled the mobs at Versailles twice over the years. Last fall, we went by local train from Paris to visit Fontainbleau for the day. It was fantastic! Easy to do, plus older and more historically-significant than Versailles, anyway. We highly recommend it.
One of the Chateaux you showed in the Bordeaux region is the Chateau de Pressac. It is currently owned by the ex financial director of Darty who has completely renovated everything. It is also where the English signed their capitulation ending the 100 years war. The wine is EXCELLENT
SUPERB! Colleen and Antoine -- you have outdone yourselves! This is by far the most comprehensive video on day trips from Paris on the Internet. And I am not saying that because I follow you -- it is simply the TRUTH ! I do have one question, though. When you buy a round trip ticket does that mean you have to come back the same day? Or can you stay a few days in Giverny, as an example, and use the return ticket then? Thanks from this spectacular autumnal Saturday morning here in NYC on my second cup of coffee! Merci beaucoup! Cheers!
Versailles resident here. Versailles is a no brainer visit if you're in Paris. Versailles Chantiers is about €8 round trip and 13 minutes on the right train from/to Montparnasse. There is one direct train each hour and the other trains take about 35 minutes (3 per hour). Book your Chateau visit online. I think Versailles can be included in a Paris Museum/Monument bundle pass ticket to save money. The top 3 others are in my view Strasbourg, Rouen and Brussels in no particular order. Mont Saint Michel is a theme park in disguise. The site is historic and beautiful for sure, but all the restaurants and shops are run by a few families who agree only on fixing high prices for everything. Defo worth the visit, but I don't reward them by buying overpriced omelettes or cookies!
I travel solo and have been fortunate to have taken day trips to modt of your recommended cities! Brussels was the most difficult with several train schedules changes and not a lot of assistance at the station 😮. Aal if the cities were wonderful and well worth returning to!
Learning a lot from your channel. I will be travelling to France for 2 weeks with a dog. What are my options to get the full Paris,France experience with my dog?
Very informative, i like your video, sweet couples . i had visited part of France like Paris, Versailes ( versailes palace or napoleon palace, mary antoinette palace, ) , French Riviera ( Nice, cannes, St.Tropez, Eze, St.Paul and other cities, I dont remember). Hope to visit France again soon .
You could add Le Havre which is very underrated. 2h/2h30 from Paris by train. The Biggest France Port : big importance for the french enconomy. Also beaches, Saint Joseph church, the architecture of the city etc..
And then there’s Chantilly, Virginia…which is mostly famous for Dulles International Airport. And some very stressful car rides! I’d rather have the cream. 😏
This video is perfect timing. I've just moved to Paris for the year, but hotels/airbnbs in Strasbourg for the nov/dec Christmas market time is.... 500$/night - give or take a little bit! just shocking! I was already looking up round trip tickets for the day! Maybe I'll return in the spring so I can experience the city better...
Fantastic video! What's the best way to get around all of these towns? Can you just walk everywhere to see all the sights or do you need other modes of transport as well within the towns?
Great selection of choices, even a couple of places I've not visited (yet). This Londoner approves your inclusion of number 3! Note: After visiting Auvres Sur Oise, you might want to visit London for the Van Gogh exhibition at the National Gallery which is running until January 19th 2025 (my birthday 🙂).
My wife is from Lille. I'm glad to see that you mentioned Chantilly. It is so pretty there. I'm surprised you didn't mention Bruges. It's less than 3 hours by train and a real 'must see' destination. I'll be in Paris on Monday night and leaving on Friday. Hotels are both expensive and hard to come by now, but we found a nice place near Montmartre. We're heading to Miami later this month. Have you heard if there was any damage down there due to the hurricane?
Our next trip to France will be in 2027 for our 20th wedding anniversary, but we'll skip Paris...well... okay...maybe spend a day or two before flying back to Montreal...you know what the Borg said...Resistance is futile. ;) We want to explore Normandy, and visit Juno Beach at Courseulles-sur-Mer, where the Canadian Forces landed on D-Day, also the Cimetière militaire canadien de Bretteville-sur-Laize south of Caen. Also would like to visit Vimy Ridge during that trip and other places in the area that we haven't determined yet (we're in the early planning stages or our trip to Italy next summer...Dai, andiamo!), but I did get some ideas by watching your video!. Pro tip: Instead of waiting hours in line to pay lots of money to get on the London Eye, you'll get a similar, or better view at the Sky Garden and entry is free. Last summer we did Versailles, St-Germain-en-Laye and Fontainebleau during our trip to Paris, all with the RER and Translien with our Navigo Semaine cards, which is good for all zones. Also, from St-Germain-en-Laye, you can take RATP bus 259 to go to Château de Malmaison, one of Napoléon Bonaparte's residences.
For London, the Eurostar can cost a lot less than 300 Euro return if you book as soon as tickets become available for your dates and travel Standard. We paid 54 Euros pp for September,
Many warrant far more than two days. But if all you have is a short trip and you want to see them, don't let that stop you. Especially if you're looking to see more of France than just Paris. It is very possible to have a quality experience in one long day.
We did a London day trip in March this year. Honestly… I recommend it because London doesn’t have too much compared to Paris and you can stroll around for a day and just hop back in the Eurostar at night if you leave on the earliest train.
Our trip to Fountainbleau cost us nothing (definitely nothing close to 100 Euros). We used our Navigo Decouvert & it allowed us to use the TER to get there.
Question, Have you ever been in Paris on May 1/2? Is it as bad as some UA-cam videos make it look? I am planning a short trip at the end of a cruise that disembarks at Barcelona. Group is myself, mother-in-law, husband. We are not youngsters. Should we embrace Paris at that time or avoid it like the plague?
It’s almost as if having high speed rail from city centers to city centers is a more efficient mode of transport than flying or driving. It’s as if modern, efficient infrastructure is a worthwhile long-term investment… Huh. 😉
This was very helpful...I will say this though...I was in Normandy in June...there is SO MUCH to see out there. I was happy I spent a few nights out there. Never made it to the Airborne Museum though. I wanted to, but ran out of time. I would like to go back to Paris though...between a lot of stuff being roped off for the olympics, and catching a fever my 2nd day, I missed out on a lot. A day trip to Belgium for chocolate would amazing. Also, I would like to see the U-boat pens in Bordeaux. Does anyone know if those are open to the public?
Bruno is wrong. Yes you don't need ID to cross the border between France and Belgium, but you are supposed to carry ID on you at all times. The state department recommends that you carry it even when traveling in the Schengen Zone, so, yeah, BRING YOUR PASSPORT.
@@maud375 la question était pour passer la frontière. Bien entendu que tu peux toujours avoir besoin de justifier de ton identité à tout moment. Comme partout.
Not really needed but you'll need to have a valid picture ID with you like a drivers license. In an abundance of caution, I would take it with me but you'll most likely won't need it. There's no border crossing between France & Belgium anymore and nobody will ask you to present your passport.
Sorry love you guys but some of these trips are not day trips in my opinion, London, Belgium, Lyon too far and expensive for a day, deserve more time to explore.
Not a good destination in my opinion, there are quite a few steps to the top ! You can use the little yellow man on Google Maps or Google Earth to see the way up the mount.
I went to Mont-Saint-Michel with my wife and kids back in August. Absolutely NEVER go there in August it was so busy we did not even try to go in. Thousands of people crammed into a tiny island with thousands more trying to get in. I had been 17 years ago it was lovely but it is now just a giant cash cow that they pack as many humans in to milk as much € as possible from. Maybe in the pissing rain in November it might be ok but defo not in August. If I remember right even the Mont’s own site tells you that Aug is not a good time to come.
My girlfriend and I almost had our car swept out to sea at Mont St Michel, back in 2006. The day after Valentine’s Day! We had arrived late in the evening and parked on the beach since the parking deck gate was locked at that time. We stayed in a hotel on the Mont. Next morning we got a call from the hotel office. The local police I guess were trying to identify the owners of a few cars including ours that has been left on the beach. The tide had come in and was rising, already several inches high. We were able to push our car out, thankfully! 😅
Great videos and I recently joined your Facebook group and tried to contribute some helpful information based on a recent trip, but was attacked by a fellow group member for "not being French nor living in Paris". Isn't the group intended for non locals to share tips etc? Disappointed and I suspect some xenophobia from that individual.

Good for 1 Year, The Carte Avantage Senior 60+ ans et +…49.00 EUR…This WILL pay for itself!
The train prices are crazy. €150 for a two hours journey on the train? No thanks. That's a rip off.
I took train to Mt st Michel from Paris ..i would not take a coach!
Great videos and I recently joined your Facebook group and tried to contribute some helpful information based on a recent trip, but was attacked by a fellow group member for "not being French nor living in Paris". Isn't the group intended for non locals to share tips etc? Disappointed and I suspect some xenophobia from that individual.
please report the person and we'll ban them. Yes it's for visitors, not for locals
