Bariatric surgery is an option for some adolescents and teenagers who are dealing with health issues related to weight. The Weight Management Team at Nemours Children's Hospital, Delaware, which includes a surgeon experienced in all aspects of bariatric surgery, all work together to evaluate a child’s overall health and emotional maturity. The family must also be fully involved in the decision-making process as well as in the long-term follow-up care.
Says Nikki, “The turning point was when my liver specialist told me, ‘in about a year, you’ll need a liver transplant.’” So Nikki asked her mom to take her somewhere to get help, and they came to the hospital in Wilmington, Delaware.
