Recommendation: take the two highest meals from each brand and rank them in order. Vendors might not be happy about it (except for one of them anyway) but customers would love that info.
glad you did this review. i just ordered some 4-5 days ago to test. drew my high country colorado mule deer tag so want to get my freeze dried meals picked out. super stoked for mine to arrive now
Bear season this year in Montana, I did a 10 day backpack trip. I tried different brands for breakfast and dinner every day. I tried all of the Stowaway gourmet a vast majority of the Heather’s Choice, and The Peak Refuel and I tried Alpen Fuel. I threw in some Mountain House as a good ole classic. I liked the Stowaway Gourmet meals from the video but honestly the amount of water needed was an issue, and they are more expensive than the other brands. For longer trips like this one in the future Heather’s Choice is hard to beat Bc they don’t require a lot of water and are the smallest package of the bunch. On short trips the Peak Refuel is hard to beat Bc of the calorie count.
Something to keep in mind is that the stowaway gourmet is 2 servings per bag whereas Heather's choice is one serving per bag; If conserving water is our objective, the efficiency metric to use would be ounces or grams of water per calorie of food cooked.
Great videos, very entertaining. Just so you know, 1.5 c = 12 ounces, which is what 2/4 of the Heather's Choice meals in the last video require. Mountain house is similar. So the Stowaway meals don't take that much more water.
This is my absolute favorite brand. Anytime they come out with a new flavor I buy multiple of them immediately. It's the closest thing you're going to find the restaurant quality on the trail.
This test is really palate dependent on where you grew up, whether you prefer a chili or a jambalaya, curry or stew. I'm from both LA and TX (now CO) but lived in each state for 20 years and I understand the chili but I'm not that much of a chili fan. I've tried all four of these and the thai curry/jambalaya are my favs.. due to my southern swamp state upbringing lol. the real success if that with stowaway gourmet and peak we no longer have to suffer with canned beans and spam, crackers and biscuits when hunting.
Maybe you could try all of the freeze dried meals of the patriot and the 4-patriots and use the 4-patriots solar waterbottle to heat up the water for the freeze dry meals and then rate them.
Brady Ben Chris you guys are doing such a great job on the information and taste testing. The video work is fantastic. Your truly a Blessing Thank You and God's Blessings
How can you go wrong with wild boar AND bacon? I bought 8 of them so I won't run out any time soon! As far as the Jambalaya goes, bring some file' powder with you backpacking to add more spice. Problem solved. It's what I intend to bring with me.
I don't hike or backpack, so I'm sub-knowledgeable and freely admit it, but if you pack in water, does it really make any difference whether you consume it as a drink or consume it by re-hydrating your food? If you have to carry all your water in anyway, does it make a difference if your food needs it to become edible and then it goes into your stomach or you just drink it, outright? It still hydrate your body, right? It seems to me, that if you are purely relying on finding a water source along your route, and hence, freeing yourself from packing water and saving the weight of it, you surely aren't worried about finding yourself in a position where your going to be collecting from a puddle that only yields 1 cup of water verses finding one that has 5 gallons in it. (or a lake/stream) Why does the water required to re-hydrate these meals make a difference?
Has anyone done any business with Stowaway Gourmet lately? I have before and it's been great but I placed about a hundred dollar order over a month ago and never got. No replies to emails or messages.
Those top 2 you picked sounded real tasty...any chance you guys can do an episode with Next Mile Meals for us fat loving carb phobic whiners? Would be nice to have a hot meal in the hills that was friendly with my diet
Thanks for the suggestion! We will definitely look into Next Mile Meals and give them a try. Until then we plan on doing taste test videos for the new flavors from Mountain house and Peak Refuel. If you haven’t yet, be sure to subscribe to our UA-cam channel and get notified for when the next taste test video is released.

I can't take a food review seriously from guys who don't know what a shallot or a bamboo shoot is.

Too judge something and not know what the ingredients are is a waste of time. Sorry.
