  • A Stick of Time brings us some of those much needed flashbacks that start explaining the man behind the Toranaga legacy. It is a brutal episode that left me stunned. On re-watch, I think I know why!

16:20 I’m so glad you discussed this conversation. I think it’s one of the biggest of the episode. (Some other channels just glossed over it or not at all, btw). I agree 100% that Toranaga has planned this all out and remains in control, but in stealth mode😉, ….and the brothel madam has figured it out.

In the official podcast they said, that this throwing a stone on the gate was something that someone from the crew used to do as a child, and they loved the idea, so they let Toranaga do it for good luck. So it's not a general custom, just a private custom of one person.

BLOOD IS THICKER THAN WATER........I pretty much agree with your theory...Remember When Toranaga's brother caught Yuki and Omi talking 💩 about him in the Hot Springs? He said something that Stuck out to me on the second watch. He said Toranaga is still Family. Like he was reminding his Nephew he hasn't forgot that.Yoshi should of picked up on what he was saying he may still be Breathing if he did. Toranaga brother wasnt even upset about his nephew talking 💩. Something about how he said that makes me believe hes not Betraying Toranaga, and Toranaga might not even know his brother is being a double agent in his favor YET. Because its odd to be betraying family then turn around and say " Me and your Dad has had our differences, but hes still Family" Implying there is no justification for what he is doing. Usually the character will go on about how he had to live in Toranaga's shadow while Tora gets all the glory, praise and respect. They almost always explain why on television. Their culture is all about Honor and what hes doing is so 🐍 like ,you would think there would be one moment of him actually showing some hint of shame in what hes doing, if he was really doing it. I didnt see any shame, in his game. I believe its because he has nothing to be ashamed about.

Your theory in the half brother being a secret ally of Toronaga is a wild one, I think he genuingly betrayed him, he doesnt seem like a smart sophisticated man. In scene with Toronaga and Gin, Gin says that its not smart to leave an army in the open because spys are everywhere, insinuating that Toronaga's army is secretly larger. He surely may have made more allies around Japan that disagrees with Ishidos machinations.

The point where the 2 lords meet and Toranaga 'surrenders'. The birdseye view of the meetup 22:48 timestamp; Toranaga's forces are arrayed like wings abreast from their lord in the centre.

Mariko kind of annoyed me this episode because I thought her finding out her father saved her so she could fight later and avenge her family. I thought that would light a fire under her but it didnt, she still wants to die...😞

Great theories. I also don't think Toranoga is confident in his long game and needs his half brother "helping him" reach Osaka and the hostages. I think Mariko will have a role in freeing the hostages with her selfless sacrifice. If this goes by other true historical events, Toranoga will battle his half brother and win the fight when spies stumble upon their enemies position and they surround their enemies. Sounds epic, to me!
