It looks like you have a very robust mycorrhizal network on your property for all those natives to germinate. There’s a great TED talk on how plants use it to communicate and share nutrients with each other.
Awesome plants here!! I love our natives. In fact, Madrones (Arbutus menziesii) and Arctostaphylos are closely related in the Madrone Tribe (Arbutoideae) in the Heath Family (Ericaceae). Impressive plants!!!! I am a native plant nut and am totally in awe with your native collection!!!!! RIP Hugo.
So a little note is that in the hobby of Aquascaping, which is growing underwater plant gardens, most often with aquarium fish, Manzanita is really popular due to its red color and beautiful wood. It contrasts very nicely with the green of many aquarium plants and is prized in the hobby. I am currently cultivating it for that reason. You could actually be selling the trimmings of your manzanita for a pretty good amount of money- the Dr Hurd variety would be particularly valued.
I’m not sure which selection of Arctostaphylos pajaroensis he has. But Arctostaphylos pajaroensis ‘Warren Roberts’ has pink flowers, nice gray/green leaves and red new growth, similar to his. It’s also quite cold hardy to at least 15F and flowers in winter. It gets about 6ftH x 8ftW. It’s a great plant, really beautiful
Love the plant stories but this is a great inspiration
Much love xoxox

I think as the soil matures without disturbance after 20 years, it gets healthier and healthier.
