    Hey all! After sitting down and painstakingly picking this famous guitar instrumental apart by ear, I discovered that there was no full tutorial up for it on UA-cam. I figured that I would rectify that situation as I'm sure that there are plenty of fleet fingered players out there who would love to take on the challenge of trying to play this beast.
    Good luck with it. It's a blast to play.
    Cheers, Kelly

    Kelly, nice job explaining this Al Di meola song! You must have put a lot of work into learning this?!!👍👍 I loved this song since I first heard it and was only playing trombone at the time had not started playing guitar, back around 1983. We were trying to jam to this in a jam band and I was playing trombone on this song !hahaha! I believe it was the intro type parts that the bass parts And that intro Melody?! Over the years I had worked on and picked up bits and pieces of the tune and try to mold some of Al's playing within my own style. So now I'm trying to work on no for note some of the intricate parts of the song,,,, so I appreciate you speeding the process up for me! Also,, a few years back,, I worked on and learned note for note, maybe his and Paco's favorite of mine, Mediterranean Sundance and Rio Ancho.. I just loved that tune since I first heard it in 83 I thought wow!!!!, what are those guys doing?? !and never ever thought I would be able to play any of it..!!. do you play those tunes also?

      Hey man, thanks! Yeah, this was a chore to pull apart by ear, but it was a labor of love. I've been on this track since I was 13, just shortly after it came out. Been a dream of mine to be able to play it one day. Haven't really tried much of Al's other stuff. Too time consuming to learn and practice, haha.

    This is a great tutorial, and the only one out there. Well done. I have been working on this for 2 days now it is coming along well. I slowed down your video, and it looks like you throw some economy picking in there as well.

    • @KellyDeanAllenGuitar
      @KellyDeanAllenGuitar  11 місяців тому

      Thanks mate. Yeah, when it comes to picking, once I get up to speed, I have no idea what I'm doing, haha. My hand just does what is most economical. I know that I stated that it's all alternate picking, however that's for Al. Can't say the same for myself when I get up to speed.

    • @bigdaddyfilmmaker
      @bigdaddyfilmmaker 11 місяців тому

      Cheers! No technique judgement here. Your playing is fantastic, and I am glad I found your channel. I just tried it your way, and I was quite please that it really helps on the string change from the 5th string after the 5 note sequence to the 6th string two notes. I really have to break this into chunkable sections as the flurry of notes is overwhelming otherwise.

  • @manlioyllades
    @manlioyllades 9 місяців тому

    I know this is a guitar channel, but recognition should go to Anthony Jackson, who doubled on his 6-string bass most of the guitar parts you mentioned as overdubbed. I saw them live in 1981 and they sounded just like the record.

    • @mwbrada
      @mwbrada 3 роки тому

      I'm not. I'm left-handed playing a right-handed guitar. My fingering is far better than my alternate picking. I need economy picking and hammer-ons and pull-offs to account for my innate natural lack of talent. Neal Schon is another master of alternate picking.

    Great tutorial, was going through it myself, also by ear, but had some difficulties and saw you have a full tutorial here. Thanks, will use this!
    I did spot a one 'mistake' though. In the intro part, when it starts descending around 0.45 there is a one note wrong - after the last note played on G-string (F# note) and going down on D, the first note is actually D, instead of E, like earlier. Around 0:48. So it doesn't go down on E twice, but jumps down to D and makes 12-11, instead of 14-11 on d-string.
    Just had to comment, as the 'lick' sounded too pentatonic and i realized something was just a tad bit off. Anyway, really good job, we'll see if i manage to take the tempo up to original

    It looks like you're economy picking the descending string switches of the lick (e.g. 3:44 at 0.25x). Sounds great. Is that subconscious? Just curious because you say it's alternate picked.

    • @KellyDeanAllenGuitar
      @KellyDeanAllenGuitar  3 роки тому

      It must be subconscious. I rarely think about what my right hand is doing. It just automatically does what's best. Al Di Meola is well known for straight alternate picking practically everything. I must be doing quick economy picks without even thinking about it.

  • @guitinwidit
    @guitinwidit 3 роки тому

    I wonder if this is the same mode as La Villa Strangiato.

  • @WilRockQ
    @WilRockQ 2 роки тому

    For the lick at 4:11 you say that everything is alternate picked, but that isn't correct. On the fourth note- the F# 9th fret on the A string
    you do an upstroke. On the 5th note the E 12 fret on the E String you do another upstroke. If you could do the whole sequence without stopping, viewers of this video could clearly see this. In fact, for a lesson on this song - the picking direction is the only thing that matters because one cannot get the same speed alternate picking this as opposed to economy picking some notes.

I really like when guitar videos are recorded from "over the shoulder viewpoint." This point of view allows the youtube viewer to look at a fret board from the same perspective if we were playing. Al did not write this tune alone. As far as that goes, there’s some plagiarism involved.

  • @chadrew6
    @chadrew6 3 місяці тому

    You're not alternate picking the notes! lol! you're unqualified to teach anyone anything. You're holding the pick in the "dead bug grip" which does not promote control and relaxed picking and does not keep the pick from moving in your grip causing you to grip the pick too tightly.
