For Wes: my son had the same problem! I talked to my pediatrician and family and googled and everything said it was more of a habit then a need. It sounds bad but when he wakes up don’t make a bottle right away. Wait like 20 minutes and see if he can be soothed back down. Obviously this will suck for your sleeping but after a couple nights it really helped!

    • @pinkone5127
      @pinkone5127 2 роки тому +57

This is very logical. Because if you feed a baby when they want you to they will continue waking up at the exact same time because that's what their used to. So breaking that routine is what you need to do. It will definitely be super hard but it will eventually work and they will sleep for longer periods.

Exactly right! I am a night nanny from the UK and this is just what needs to be done. It is indeed a habit and Wes doesn't actually need that many feeds at night. He will do a very good impression of a starving baby and will test you to the limit - but if you leave him to resettle it will be almost an immediate change. You are basically teaching him that it's ok to stay in bed and not feed in the middle of the night. He will learn really quickly but the first night will be the hardest. Once you get tiny pauses between the cries then you know he is starting to give up. You are aiming for him to go back to sleep on his own and it could take 20 minutes. Next time he wakes in the night he will remember there's no milk if you don't come and will go back off much quicker. Good luck!

One thing that helped my NICU baby once he was a bit bigger, was getting a sleep suit for him to sleep in. He was took big/wiggly to safely do a swaddle and obviously loose blankets aren’t safe, but he liked having something slightly heavier on him, especially because our room is typically the coldest in the house. I really liked the RESTCLOUD brand off Amazon. I remember you tried the Merlin suit with Flynn and it didn’t work well for him, but perhaps that would help Wesley?

With our triplets, we extended their sleeping time by 5-10 minutes every few days until they reached 4 hours, and then 5, etc. etc. It was around 6 months (4 months adjusted time) that they would sleep 6 hours or so. By 9 months they were sleeping through the night. We also made sure they had full tummies and dry diapers of course. We also heated their blankets for when we put them back down, and it helped them fall asleep quickly. And for the boy, we put a weighted blanket on him for comfort. Most of the time it worked, but of course for every two steps forward there was a step back. Just decide what method you are going to do and then keep trying.

When he wakes up, distract him for a bit before you feed him. Start with a few minutes just to get him used to the idea that he isn't going to get fed the second he wakes up, and then stretch it out a bit more each time he wakes up. You can also try teaching him some self-soothing techniques during the day. That way if he wakes up but isn't hungry he can sooth himself back to sleep.

As far as the longer stretches, we had success as soon as my son was in his own room. They can smell you and your milk. I put him in his own room pretty early. What helped me do that is we used an owlet monitor on his feet so that if something were to go wrong I would hear. A sound machine also helped but I swear once he was in his own room he would sleep all the way through the night. Also formula at night helped him be more full.

I’ve heard a lot of babies have success with this! But my baby preferred to cosleep in our bed with us and would sleep longer stretches that way. It also made it much easier to breastfeed her when she woke up at night. Check out the safe sleep 7 from the la leche league on how to maintain a safe sleep environment if you decide to try cosleeping. I know people cosleep with twins as well but I don’t have any experience specifically with that. If you don’t want to cosleep or move them to their own room, you could also try other methods (cuddling, rocking, singing, etc) to get him back to sleep without feeding him once or twice a night. Or stretching the feeding by not feeding him as soon as he wakes up at 3 hours. So when he wakes up you could hold him in a quiet dark environment so he starts to learn he can go longer between feeds and then feed him at 3 hours 15 minutes a few times and then 3.5 hours and then 4 hours and so on. It may takes him a few nights to learn and adjust which I know can be extra hard on your sleeping so I know it may not be doable but wanted to throw it out there.

I would let Maisy sleep the longer stretches that she's growing into. I wouldn't disrupt her improving sleep habits to keep her on the same "bad" schedule that you're trying to discourage in Wes. You and Erik may have to just take one baby each at night and follow their individual schedules until Wes can sleep for longer stretches.

Advice for the twin sleep thing. I have twin boys and one of them started sleeping longer stretches before the other. I would recommend you and Eric come up with a system, where you wake up with Wes, and Eric wake up with Maisy. That way Maisy could sleep at night... if she wakes up an hour or two after Wes, then Eric can take care of her. For me, one twin started waking up once a night when the other still woke up twice... having a designated baby during the night helped me get a little more sleep (although I feel like I would always wake up regardless to make sure my husband woke up... I'm such a deep sleeper but when I had babies, I heard everything. like magic. haha). When we did this, it did not affect their sleep schedule sync during the day. We would always make sure they napped and ate at the same time during the day, but at night, we let them sleep if they wanted to.
Your babies are so so adorable. These are such hard times, but they are such great times. Take lots of videos. I barely remember anything from that hurricane of a time and so happy I documented a lot of it through photos and videos.

It's supposed to help your baby sleep for longer, which could help Wesley not wake up every 3 hours. Love your channel, you are doing an incredible job with the twins, can't wait to see how their personalities change and grow as they get older xxx

As a childcare worker, I can say this works 100%, the weighted sleep sack was incredible when I was working with babies. The weight helps to calm them down as it imitates them kinda being back in the womb. Also, try having some soft music on loop in the background, as it can help them to calm down if they're just being a bit fussy. I have a really good one that works all the time. Hope u see this ua-cam.com/video/6Am4wzgVRNI/v-deo.html

Hey Colleen I'm not a mom but my fiancee said he was the same way when he was a baby and so was his dad. What his grandmother and mom said they did was instead every three hours when he would wake up they would wait ten minutes to feed him, then the next night it would be 3 hours and 15 minutes and so on. It helped him sleep longer throughout the night in the long run.
I know that's really hard to do it would seem very hard to do. But if you're willing to try it's worth a shot. I love you and thank you so much for your videos I watch everyday you post and it makes my day everytime. Love of love ❤️❤️

Tip for your 3hr sleep issue: Can you perhaps trying when Wesley wakes up - spend like 30 mins if possible (at least) by holding him, rocking him, using dummy etc and then waking up M for their feed? So over time you’re gradually stretching if..
Probably won’t be fun for the first few nights but hopefully you can at least stretch it to 4 hours so you can get a bit extra sleep!

  • @Moonlightlove31

I think it’s worth trying to separate the twins at night. It will suck not sleeping together but you could switch off nights with Eric so one of you can get better sleep every other night. And keep the babes on the same schedule during the day! But they might be too young to be synchronized, once Wesley starts eating less often you can get them on the same night schedule again

@@Mosie926 Idk if you have kids, but usually once babies are gaining weight fine, you get the okay from the pediatrician to let them gain weight at the rate that their bodies naturally do it. So that can look like longer stretches between feeds. Just because Maisy is smaller than Wesley doesn’t mean she isn’t gaining weight at an appropriate rate, so there’s no need to make her eat more. If they weren’t twins, Colleen would likely just move to on demand feeding with Maisy and let her sleep as long as she wants, but I imagine keeping the twins on the same schedule is more important at this time.

A tip I learned from taking cara babies was when trying to get your baby to do longer stretches, when they wake up soothe them without milk first. See if you can get them to sleep 2 more minutes then maybe 5 more minutes whether it's with a binky or whatever and work your way up from wherever your baby starts. Then when you can no longer soothe them feed them. It's hard cuz you spend time soothing them so you're up longer but the idea is training their tummies little by little to go longer. I'm sure you've heard of her course before but it's really good! Also Flynn's commentary is the cutest thing ever!

Baby night sleep advice: Start gradually decreasing the amount at the first night feeding while also increasing the amount he eats during the day such that the total ounces for the whole day is the same. Like decrease the amount you feed him at the 9 PM feeidng by .5 ounces and add that to the 6 PM feeding. Do that for like 3 days, then decrease the 9 PM feeding by another .5 ounces and add that to the 3 PM feeding. Etc. Once the 9 PM feeding gets low enough just cut it out. He may still wake up, just don't feed him and put him back to sleep.

I would just try and settle him (for up for 30 - 45 mins maybe) first before offering the feed. Once he gets the cue that waking = doesn't = feeding, he might get the idea. I would turn mine on their sides until back asleep (took around 15 mins to get them back into a deep sleep). Good luck xxx

It’s so good to see you and Erik happier. I know things were rough and probably still are but it seems like y’all are in a nice groove with the babies and have a routine down. I am so happy you can hold them both! I know you were so worried about that when you were pregnant with them. Prayers things keep getting easier 💙💖🙏🏻💙

Hi Colleen! I’ve never commented but Ive been watching you for years now and your vlogs are one of my nightly wind down activities after a long day of being a mama! I’m glad you asked about baby sleep because I almost commented a few vlogs back giving baby sleep advice but decided that I didn’t want to give unwanted advice. After nursing my first born multiple times a night every night for a year and a half, I decided I needed to change things up when I had my son. I found Taking Cara babies on IG and her courses are so amazing! I’ve learned so much! I highly recommend checking them out. A few basic things about baby sleep-a tight swaddle like the swaddle me brand(unless they can roll over), sound machine on high, and a pitch dark cool room. Also I found that moving my son to my husbands side of the bed so that he couldn’t smell me worked wonders! Maybe if you’re comfortable enough you could even try moving Wesley to the nursery to see how he does. That way he wouldn’t wake Maisy, since she’s the better sleeper for now. And he might do longer stretches in there! Good luck! I hope it gets a little easier soon, it’s exhausting but the most amazing journey right?! And you’re doing an incredible job 💗
