Sital Desai hi Sita, this is likely to be the stitch itself. Sometimes the knot dissolved and then the dissolvable stitch can ‘spit out’ and it looks like white string. As long as the wound is intact, then I would not be concerned, but if you are worried, you should contact your surgeon. JJ Staiano
Sital Desai hi Sital, if you are our patient, please give us a ring and we will see you to reassure you, but in general terms, it doesn’t sound like anything to worry about in itself. The stitches can take a couple of months to dissolve and in that time, your body can say ‘I’ve had enough of this’ and start to spit them out, especially if they are close to the skin (which they usually are). This is the white string that you are describing. The main things we would be worried about are: 1. Is the integrity of the wound alright, ie is the wound healed well? 2. Is there any sign of infection, ie is there any redness, pain or swelling around the wound? If both of these are OK, I wouldn’t be too concerned about the white string, although I can see that you are worried about it, so go back and see your surgeon for reassurance (or come back to us if we did your surgery). I had a Trabeculectomy with Mitomycin C eye surgery on Oct 30th. I have dissolvable sutures that are very irritating with my eye lid especially when trying to go to sleep. 1. Is there anything that I can do to help this suture to dissolve more quickly? 2. How long does it normally take for this type of eye suture to dissolve?
That is quite a specific procedure that would have been performed by an ophthalmic surgeon, so you should check with them about this. I do not have experience of this sort of surgery. There is nothing that can be done to make them dissolve more quickly but they can be removed if they are taking a long time to dissolve and they are irritating. JJ

Hello i have a question. I had cut my pinky with a porcelain plate a week ago. One week ago I went to the emergency room and I have 4 dissolvable stitches on my pinky. I want to know how long the stitches are going to dissolve. I cannot move my pinky that much. I’m scared about my pinky not working after the stitches dissolve. How long does the 4 stitches take to dissolve on a pinky finger. The stitches are the size of an inch.
Hi Andrez, there are different types of dissolvable sutures so you should ask the doctor who put them in because it will depend on what suture they used. After a week or two the wound should be healed so your doctor may be able to remove them if they have not dissolved. Good luck! JJ

Best to ask the surgeon who put them in because they are a lot of different types. It is usually measured in weeks and if they are not causing problems, they can be left. If they start to cause issues after a week or two, you can visit your surgeon or nurse to see if they can remove them. JJ

Not necessarily, it depends on what type of suture was used and the knots can take longer to dissolve. If it is on the red of your lip, there is not as much of a concern about leaving stitch marks, so if they are not causing bother, you can leave them. If they are on the skin of your lip, then they can leave dots on either side of the scar and so it might be worth looking at getting them removed as they should have done their job by now. As ever, always best to check back with your surgeon or their nurse. JJ

Hi Nathan, best to work with your surgeon as they will know what type of sutures they have used. We sometimes use permanent sutures for hernia repair, so if one of these is peeping through, it will need to be explored and removed. If it is dissolvable, it should sort itself out. Good luck. JJ
Hi doctor one more thing I did a tendon repair surgery (last on in September) on my left thumb. After the surgery and maybe around two months passes by then i could start see a blue coloured thread sticking out of my thumb. There is also a lump we're the thread is peeping out. So what should i do?? It also hurt when ever someone touches it.
Hi Nathan, we often use permanent sutures for tendon repairs and the fact that it is blue, also suggests that it is a permanent (non dissolvable suture). I think that you should go back to your surgeon to let them have a look as it may need to be explored. JJ Staiano

Hello doctor. I got stitches after circumcision and was told the stitches will fall off by itself after a week. It's been two weeks and nothing happened. Is this a sign for something
Not really. It is hard to predict how long they will take precisely. As long as there is no sign of infection or irritation, you could probably wait. If there is irritation, then you could see your surgeon or their nurse as they may be able to remove them if it has healed well. JJ
there are often bits sticking up. I guess the main question is 'does the wound look OK?" It would always be best to approach your surgeon if you are concerned. JJ
Hi M, it is always surgeon dependant. If you are doing a conchal reduction by removing a piece of concha, then you can use dissolvable sutures. However, if you are doing an otoplasty to reshape the antehelical fold and concha using sutures (rather than anterior scoring), then it will need to be a permanent suture. JJS
Hmmm, 2 days is quite soon, but presumably there are other stitches there holding things together? The main question is 'has the wound opened up?'. It is always best to talk to your surgeon (or dentist) or whoever put the stitches in as they will be best placed to advise. JJ
I had a hysterectomy on Aug 21 how much longer will it take for my stitches to go away I'm allowed to have sex but my husband keeps getting poked buy them when we have sex it really starting to really bother me cuz he cant enjoy him self
Hi Christina, thanks for your question. It usually takes a couple of months for the stitches to dissolve but it depends on the type of stitches used and the knots take longer. However, I would check this with your surgeon because the stitches are usually buried underneath your skin and so your husband shouldn't really be getting poked by them. Are they on the outside? If you can see stitches on the outside, then these may need to be removed, so best to get checked out. Good luck.

The main things we would be worried about are:
JJ Staiano
@@TheStaianoClinic sir no infection and no pain ..but soon I will show it to my surgen

So I have 5 dissolvable stitches on my thumb, I was told when I got in the shower and gave a clean these would just brush off after a week or so, it’s been 2 weeks now, still no sign
I'm so confused! What was the question again?
Kizzie Thomas something about dissolvable sutures 🙄
Good luck! JJ
My stitches are removed ...but Cotton roller bandage small threads floating on my wound which Stucked in my body when wound Closed with Cotton roler bandage it will get dissolve or not

What to do now they are looking like very small very difficult to find out them... I cant give more pressure there to find out them because my wound is recently healed.... After normal delivery stitches dissolving time???
Best to ask the surgeon who put them in because they are a lot of different types. It is usually measured in weeks and if they are not causing problems, they can be left. If they start to cause issues after a week or two, you can visit your surgeon or nurse to see if they can remove them. JJ

hey, i recently got dissolvable stitches on my lip and they have been there for 3 weeks, should they have gone away by now? thanks!

I would not have thought so. Something would need to be quite large to make you choke and dissolvable stitches are normally like small threads.
So I got a tooth removed and two stitches came out after 2 days from the operation am I in trouble?
Hmmm, 2 days is quite soon, but presumably there are other stitches there holding things together? The main question is 'has the wound opened up?'. It is always best to talk to your surgeon (or dentist) or whoever put the stitches in as they will be best placed to advise. JJ
