  • First test of the Alpacka Raft Refuge in Oselva near Bergen Norway.
The Alpacka Raft Refuge is a ultralight packraft weighing 2.5 kg (5.5lbs). It has a whitewater deck , cargo fly and the same leg room as a classic medium alpacka raft. It has smaller tubes and is a bit less stable, but is easier to roll and maneuver. The low weight makes it good for fast and light trips.
I have attached standard alpacka raft thigh braces with 2 component urethane glue (4 attachment points on each side).
The water flow was about 6m3/s at Røykenes
This was filmed with a helmet mounted GoPro 10 and a GoPro 9 on the bow of the packraft. I need to attach the GoPro on the bow better because the camera moves too much in this setup.
The paddle is a light weight 205cm 4 piece Aqua-Bound whiskey paddle.

Nice tour. Did you add leg straps afterwards for whitewater or is that a standard Refuge?

How do you mount your GoPro to the bow?

gopro's vented helmet strap mount attached to the 2 attachments at the bow of the packraft. but it is not stable enough for rapids. ai have to add a bigger platform to limit the camera movement.

How do you like the refuge in rapids compared to other boat models? I like how light it is and want one, but I am not sure if I would be better served by a Classic or Expedition. Thank you!

This is the first model of the refuge and i had to glue in the thigh braces myself. from 2023 Alpackaraft sells a refuge with a whitewater deck and thigh braces. My Refuge comes with a zipper that lets you store things inside the tubes. The standard classic comes without zipper for internal storage and without thigh braces. I prefer internal storage and braces. The expedition is just a bigger boat than the refuge, and it is probably more stable. The refuge is more playful and probably easier to roll mainly because of the size and lower volume tubes. In bigger water an expedition is probably easier. The whitewater boats like the gnarwhal and wolverine is even more stable, but the gnarwhal has very thick tubes and is much more difficult to roll. I prefer the smaller volume wolverine than the gnarwhal. Because the refuge is lower volume , I feel it is easier to brace and stay upright when I do something wrong in a rapid. I would either go for a refuge or an expedition with thigh braces. The decision is mainly based on how much weight you will have in the boat. The refuge is mainly a light and fast, but I have no problem in using is in grade 3.
