Laurens' death was sadder than Hamilton's, because Hamilton's legacy lived on. He made the US, and what he made lived on and prospered because of his action. But because of the south, Laurens' legacy died with him because the slave masters took back their slaves. Its so sad how his legacy was killed by this vile system.
Actually, George Washington compelled others to follow Laurens' example and even though he never freed a slave in his own lifetime, he fully supported Laurens. Also when you read about Lafayette, he wrote letters about Laurens and went, "welp, he did everything in his power to die and yet lived, what a miracle" in some cases. So his legacy does kinda live on. (even though the German Wikipedia thinks it's okay to only have about 3,5 sentences on him)
Isn’t is sad how John’s efforts came to waste? All that recruiting, trading, and persuasion just for the freedom of those slaves to be tarnished when he died?
It was not for nothing! What he encouraged the generals of the Union (those against slavery) to fight alongside them in the civil War for their freedom. The confederacy used slaves as animals to fight in the war to preserve themselves. What laurens did was align soldiers with different skin tones. John laurens permanently freed 3,000 + slaves.

"John Laurens was the most militant opponent of slavery in this band of brothers. He was also the most reckless in battle (which is saying something, in a crew that includes Lafayette and Hamilton). To me, his death is the greatest What-If? in American history. A voice for emancipation from a surviving Revolutionary War veteran and a favourite of Wahington: We'll never know what could have been." AND "Here's the thing about Hamilton's response: It's more telling when he's quiet than when he has something to say. This was true of the historical Hamilton as well. We have very little written record of his grieving for Laurens. For a man who had an opinion on everything, for him to hold back betrays genuine, life-changing grief. It is possible that Hamilton and Laurens were lovers at some point - Hamilton's letters to Laurens are every bit as flirtatious as his letters to the opposite sex, if not more so. And yet he didn't write a single song about their forbidden love, this might be one of the only mistakes in the Hamilton musical, and it still pisses me off
@@ellegii_ I don't know if you'd like to hear this. But irl. It was canon. It was shown in letters. Also Hamilton said that there weren't words to show how much he loved Laurens so he'll show it through actions. And he wanted a nice looking girl. Not gorgeous. But only nice looking. He asked to not have a beautiful woman. (Sorry for ranting)
he said "its from john laurens, i'll read it later" because he and laurens had been exchanging letters and it was laurens' turn to send one back he never got to send a letter back :(
Wanna know another thing? The last letter from Laurens was a declaration to Hamilton, and (don't remenber from who, but i think it was Laurens) the very last one said "I'll love you forever, till i die"
Candy Playz Dude... You do know this is the workshop version right? This is a deleted song in the musical so of course they didn’t cast record it and put it up!
This isn't just an interlude, this is also a prelude for Non-Stop. After hearing about how his friend's death was not only a tragic twist of fate, his life ending far too soon and so abruptly, but his efforts for freedom until then had been wasted. Alexander, realizing how little time he has on this earth, threw himself hard into his work. So hard, he began neglecting his family to "build his legacy". Something he can leave behind that will last. It's here that Alexander Hamilton begins his descent.
Hamilton witnessed near-death experiences multiple times in his life, his father left him, his mother fell ill, his cousin committed suicide and survived a hurricane. He felt like he was constantly escaping her. After many years, life finally favored him, they had won the war, he was able to return to his wife and meet his son, he was happy, but the death of Laurens showed him that death was still close to him. For this reason, upon learning of John's death, the only thing he says is "I have a lot of work to do", having lost his best friend made him feel that fear of running out of time again. When Burr said "Why do you write like you're running out of time?" Alexander was doing it for Laurens.
I feel like reading the comment section is really not good for my heart💔 the more i read the more painful it becomes. I just...gonna stop this here this pain is already enough for several days and now that you mention it one of the saddest things in this song is because it's *real* the people in it are once alive like us this is no marvel this is a story of real-life all the things that happen here has happened before and the character...they really go through it all from *the wound to the war to the death it's happened it's real* and that is just tragic
I've seen people add Hercules and Lafayette before but it makes it true that you added burr. It shows that he may not seem he was close with the gang but he sure did love them.
well they were definitely friends, that's for sure... Burr just seems like that one friend in the gang that's the most logical and the one that always says, "No don't do that, it's bad," or "Think twice before you act." Yeah, that kind of friend.
Barn Owl Entertainment yeah I literally research on John and the man was gay af Hamilton was into him and didn't care about social norms cause he wasn't from America
"As you may know Lieutenant Colonel Lawrence was engaged in recruiting 3000 men for the first all black military regiment, the surviving members of this regiment have been returned to their Masters." That. Hit. Hard.
The fact that he works himself instead of showing emotions shows how much he is addicted to that stupid quill and paper. I guess we all cope differently. I just read hamilton fan fics XD
Wait- I just noticed something…. In the first frame with Hercules Mulligan, there are four empty chairs next to him. I think those chairs symbolize Laf, Laurens, Burr and Alex and how they are now separated. Laf is going back to France Herc is in his tailoring business and raising his family Burr is also raising his family and getting immersed in politics Alex is raising his family, getting immersed in politics and about to become the US treasurer And Laurens is dead The squad is now disbanded, broken …………. Ima go die now ADIOS
The reason I cry in this scene everytime is not just because he died and he was such a great friend to Alexander but because his dream of having the first all black battalion died with him all those men were sent back to their masters back into slavery and bondage, back to having almost no hope, for their freedom, and their children’s freedom,I feel like of piece of hope for freedom and equality for people of color died with Lauren’s because look we are still having this fight for equality to this day and as a young black girl it just really I don’t know...all I can think about is all those families who got their hopes up just to be put back in bondage...and just to loose a good man who had started to make a difference😔
He ment way more than a friend to Hamilton and that's yet another reason his death was so sad, after he found the news Hamilton shunned himself away from anyone for two days, he wouldn't eat or speak to anyone or anything.
@Cyber Criminal I would mourn for days on end, but what me and the other person ment was that John Laurens and Hamilton were in a confirmed relationship with each other, historians have found love letters written between the two but some are so sexual the had to concern them.
He would’ve been the greatest god damn uncle ever Imagine Phillip been taken to school by Laurens and been babysitted by him when Alex and Eliza would go out Now I’m crying GOD DAMN IT SZIN
The line that gets me in this is 100% *"Tomorrow there'll be MOOORE OF US"* The way Anthony sings it is so rich and beautiful, and you can hear the tragic feeling of the moment but also the praise given to Laurens and how great of a man he was. This is one of the many reasons why I think Anthony was an amazing casting decision.
Your name is Alex you are a poet, and you wrote that "poem" just to show it... and I'm about to turn twelve.......that didn't really rhyme, but still you can't write mine
He did not live to see their glory... But he did gladly join the fight... Now when their children share their story.. They'll share the story of that night..
I like to think the "I have so much work to do" came from him knowing Lauren's fought till his last breath for America, and so he HAD to continue the work, and so he wanted to get it done as quickly as possible.
DJ Dipstick I’m pretty sure that’s basically what happened. When he is silent speaks more that when he is loud. Plus, the way his father worded it: “His dream of freedom for these young men dies with him,” it forces him to realize that if he doesn’t finish his goals before he dies, no one will. It forces him to come to terms with Washington’s “You have no control who lives, *Who dies,* who tells your story.”

May we all just appreciate the moment at 0:22, when BURR also cries? I mean, Hamilton, Lafayette and Mulligan all were close friends with Laurens, and of course they were devastated when he died. But Burr, a reserved man, and very calm one, who was more a fellow soldier for Laurens than loving friend, ALSO is heartbroken by his death. What a moment.
"The surving members of this regiment have been returned to their masters" Wait, the slaves? The people John helped?! They were sent back?!? His work was in vein?!?!?! Why is no one talking about this?!?!?!?
That part destroys me every time. There is nothing worse than to have everything you worked towards taken apart and forgotten-exactly what Hamilton most fears

I just realized something. Hamilton is the only one who doesn't cry. Even Burr cries. That just shows two things. 1. Hamilton was so strong that he knew he couldn't cry in front of Eliza because he knew he was keeping her together. 2. Hamilton knew Lauren's wouldn't want him to cry. He knew He would see John Lauren's again. Excuse me while I go cry
I kinda do that. I feel like I can't cry infront of my friends becuase I don't want them to worry about me. Even though my friends do cry at school and we all comfort them and stuff.

@@selitajimenez182 I mean....of course we can never be sure but there is evidence to suggest that Lams existed irl. They sent each other letters they all got published and are all online, but basically in one Hamilton was talking about how he hates Congress, he hated working and he hated himself, but how Laurens (who at the time was 'In South Carolina, redefining bravery') could make him feel better, and basically begged him to come back home. What's worse is he never saw Laurens alive again which just makes this whole thing even sadder. Laurens was Alex's closest friend, he said that himself, and was obviously heartbroken. A comment earlier said this in more detail, but Alex wrote about how he had lost his closest friend and how the world would mourn the loss. This all sounds very one sided, but also in some letters laurens showed similar feelings to Hamilton but not many of his were published. Of course we can never know, but in my own head canon Lams was real Also Lin ships it he's read said letters and tweeted out response to a question about Lams. If u want sources I can post sorry this was so long XD
Also, when Alex says “I have so much work to do,” I think he uses his work as a coping mechanism because he doesn’t know what else to do in situations like these. All he knows is is work, and is comfortable with it, and confides within it
Oof i always thought that it was because he was planning on finding a way to get the black soldiers freed or something along those lines but that makes more seanse
I always thought is was because he saw it as everything Laurens had done to better the world being erased, and was working frantically to leave a mark that would stick, after the gruesome reminder that his days were numbered, hence ' why do you write like you're running out of time? Write day and night like you're running out of time', because he just realized that he is. But then again, the coping technique theory makes a lot of sense, too.
@@nobodynose4198 don't quote me on this - I don't learn much about the American side of history, being English - but I believe Hamilton didn't care for freeing slaves. Like, he didn't actively support it, but wasn't against it.
stinkii dingo Hamilton was an abolishinist I believe. He never spoke out too much about it during his time but tried to do what he could to help. Due to his position he knew he couldn’t get them freed but paved the way. At least that’s what I know
**Deep Comment Warning** Even after listening to the soundtrack every night for weeks, I still can't stop my eyes from watering *at least*. It's when he finds out about Laurens' death that Alex is speechless for the first time in the entire musical. Hamilton wrote this in a letter to Nathaniel Greene: "[....] The world will feel the loss of a man who has left few like him behind; and America, of a citizen whose heart realized that patriotism of which others only talk. I feel the loss of a friend whom I truly and most tenderly loved, and one of a very small number." Laurens was honestly such an amazing person. Even though he never felt the torture of being enslaved, he understood that it is an *evil* practice, and it must be stopped. His untimely demise was all for nothing: the war was already over, the British had surrendered, there was no reason for him to die. And I know people are getting ticked about Alex's "I have so much work to do", but I don't think he was saying that in regards to his actual career. In my opinion, he was saying that he had so much work to do in regards to Laurens' dream that he left behind when he died. He felt that it was his duty to fulfill this dream, and he did a good job in stirring up resentment against slavery. More and more people took up the cause, and eventually it led to the abolition. Laurens would've been so proud. There's no way you don't get emotional when you realize he never got to meet his daughter. He never got to see his legacy. Any of it. It's not fair that he died so suddenly, and that his death was all for naught. You pick the prettiest flowers in the garden first. Thanks for taking the time to read this, like, or not, doesn't really matter to me, just wanted to put all this out here into the world
"How are you?" What I say: I'm fine What I mean: My son John Laurens not only died in one of the most tragic ways possible, but all the hard work he put to free a few slaves was completely wasted when those men either died or were sent to there masters. All that on top of the fact he never even got to say good bye to the man he loves, and Alexander never got to say good by to, in his own words "the only thing in this world that doesn't disgust him". Alexander later went on to name one of his sons after him and when his son read their letters, they were so sexual he had to bleep out most of the words and oMG I CAN'T HANDLE THIS MY HEART
Yeah, it historical cannon. Alexander also had a fling with George Washington, which George broke off after getting the letter from Eliza saying she's pregnant. John Laurens was the only real person he had true feelings for, not even Angelica or Eliza came close
i can't lie, i can't remember the last time I actually shed tears listening to music or watching an animatic, and this one got me. it was the line 'those that survived have been returned to their masters' that hit me like a brick, i physically recoiled a little. the animatic adds to the affect with john watching with that sense of melancholy pride... he got so close, but it slipped out of his reach. no, i'm not ok.
Fun fact: Alexander acted like he did after Elizabeth told him John was killed because Alexander has been writing love letters to John. That’s also another reason he said that he would read it later. He didn’t want Elizabeth to find out that him and John has been writing love letters to each other.
After Lauren’s death Alexander’s life began to spiral downwards,he lost his job his son died and he cheated on his wife because his life felt empty without John in it
IMO it's not directly because John died, but his death reminded Alexander he was still close to death, and feared he was running out of time so worked non stop and that's how all the stuff happened. It was partially because of John, but indirect at that.
He didn't cheat on his wife because his life felt empty, he cheated on his wife because he was a jerk. Don't excuse something like cheating, it's never okay.
What's really sad is that Hamilton actually went 2 days without talking to anybody else, Not even his wife, friends or family after John's death. He shunned himself from everybody else and had a hard time making new friends. He even refuses to talk about Laurens after he died, because it caused him too much pain. And there are even rumors that Eliza was jealous of how much Alex felt and wrote to John after reading their letters, So maybe she helped in destroying or censoring those letters between Alex and John, Idk, please don't come after me. Its only a theory and its not a fact. So yeah, Alex really loved John and it's both cute and sad
0:19 ham blushing when eliza said he got a letter from south carolina😏 0:26 ham nervous when eliza said the letter wasn’t from laurens 0:28 e 1:07 they are trying to hold hands💔😭 1:01 when eliza said that all the slaves of john’s black batallion were returned to their masters was when obssecion with legacy started, cause he realised everything laurens did was for nothing, this frightened alexander as you can see in this frame LAMS FACT: when laurens died hamilton stayed 2 days whidought talking to anyone (even with his family) and freindly remaider that this is the only moment in the whole musical that hamilton stays speachless
after I learned about Alexander and Laurens relationship this scene hurts more. its been over 9 months since i learned of it and I still constantly re-watch the scene and this animation which just makes me cry so so so much. hurts more because he died not knowing they had won.
And Alex had written him a letter 2 weeks before he died asking him to leave the war and join Congress and bro... And Ham not knowing he died until October...and it just killing a part of himself
Not really a secret. Hamilton wanted Lauren's to join him and Eliza on their wedding night. Eliza knew what was going on. How she felt about it is unknown though
The phrase "I have so much work to do" is actually saying "holy *SHIT* my BOYFRIEND just died so I'll go work to avoid the pain and misery,DAMMIT LAURENS!"
He didn't live to see their glory And he died while in the fight When their children told their story They told the story of that night "Tomorrow there'll be more of us" And then Philip had to go to the other side
Laurens’ death was by far the saddest one in the musical: Not only did he never get to see his best friend again, He never got to meet Philip, (who I highly believe would have been his godson) And he never knew America was freed And everything he worked for to free slaves died with him when all the surviving troops of his regiment were sent back to their masters. No one can EVER convince me that any death in Hamilton was sadder than Laurens’ Edit: Whenever I’m sad now my code is going to be “I have so much work to do”
Aren’t we all... “I have so much work to do....” it’s even sadder when you hear how we said that. He was going to cry but knew he couldn’t because him being strong meant that Eliza would be too....
yo i think the song here and in the film was different like the contents was kinda different and i dont think it was mentioned in this vid that it was from his father like eliza just said its not from john laurens........ right?
In the play Phillip and Lauren’s were played by the same guy. It was just so funny to me because I was trying to imagine a 9 year old when him and Alexander stood at the same height. Then Phillip died. THEY KILLED HIM TWICE IN THE SAME PLAY
Heres if your not crying enough, here's johns whole story: When he was a kid he lived near a slave prison, and he was friends with two of them, and one was even named John feill, And the other, was Xavier Harring. He promised when he grew up he would make world peace and before john turned 13 they both died in a year difference. He grew up suicidal but he wanted to start a revolution for his lost friends and later met Hercules Mulligan (he never historically met Lafayette) and soon met alexander hamilton who also wanted a revolution for thier wounds to be noticed. Fast forward he thought he won the war but he was going home and got shot in the back 4 times and shot in the chest, so he thought he saw his glory and he had faith and he wanted to make up for not saving his childhood friends, so he wanted to end all slavery, the war was over when he was killed.
Wait I so sorry for saying this but if you notice at 0:18, it says "It's from John Laurens, I'll read it later". That means John always send Hamilton love letters. I luv history

AHHH
I feel like reading the comment section is really not good for my heart💔 the more i read the more painful it becomes. I just...gonna stop this here this pain is already enough for several days and now that you mention it one of the saddest things in this song is because it's *real* the people in it are once alive like us this is no marvel this is a story of real-life all the things that happen here has happened before and the character...they really go through it all from *the wound to the war to the death it's happened it's real* and that is just tragic
Ack such sadness and deepness makes a girl like me cry
Emotional
Nothing like a good historical lesson to empty my tear ducts
I've seen people add Hercules and Lafayette before but it makes it true that you added burr. It shows that he may not seem he was close with the gang but he sure did love them.
it was john's father
(I think)
Ria Ev. it was actually burr, not john’s father. you can see by theodosia (daughter not wife)
well they were definitely friends, that's for sure... Burr just seems like that one friend in the gang that's the most logical and the one that always says, "No don't do that, it's bad," or "Think twice before you act." Yeah, that kind of friend.
The other thing is that he left a mother and child behind. John even promised his wife that he’d come back to see his child. But didn’t.
Barn Owl Entertainment yeah I literally research on John and the man was gay af Hamilton was into him and didn't care about social norms cause he wasn't from America

"Great friend"

I like to think the "I have so much work to do" came from him knowing Lauren's fought till his last breath for America, and so he HAD to continue the work, and so he wanted to get it done as quickly as possible.
I would think otherwise if it weren't for the way he said it, but he almost seems motivated.
I think it was that Hamilton was deeply affected by his friends death so he drowned himself in work to distract himself from the pain
THOSE ARE REAL FRIENDS
That must explain why he sings such a cheery song right after Laurens’s death. He’s trying to stay sane and his life starts to spiral out of control

May we all just appreciate the moment at 0:22, when BURR also cries? I mean, Hamilton, Lafayette and Mulligan all were close friends with Laurens, and of course they were devastated when he died. When Laurens died, Hamilton's life when out of control. Laurens was the one who held it together. LAMS be trueee
Of course we can never know, but in my own head canon Lams was real

It's Laurens' expression for me. The quiet pride, melancholy peace. szin outdid themself here.
At least that’s what I know
**Deep Comment Warning**
Even after listening to the soundtrack every night for weeks, I still can't stop my eyes from watering *at least*. It's when he finds out about Laurens' death that Alex is speechless for the first time in the entire musical. Hamilton wrote this in a letter to Nathaniel Greene:
"[....] The world will feel the loss of a man who has left few like him behind; and America, of a citizen whose heart realized that patriotism of which others only talk. I feel the loss of a friend whom I truly and most tenderly loved, and one of a very small number."
Laurens was honestly such an amazing person.

Did Alexander really say that?!?!?!?
Yes. Yes he did.
Wait hold on this ship happened irl?
Yes. It is a historic fact that they had feelings for each other. Just look up the letters and you will see everything you need to.

He shunned himself from everybody else and had a hard time making new friends. He even refuses to talk about Laurens after he died, because it caused him too much pain. The phrase "I have so much work to do" is actually saying "holy *SHIT* my BOYFRIEND just died so I'll go work to avoid the pain and misery,DAMMIT LAURENS!"
@MutatedQuazenta , I was JUST ABOUT TO SAY THAT!!!
Great Lam's shippers think alike!

He didn't live to see their glory
And he died while in the fight
When their children told their story
They told the story of that night
"Tomorrow there'll be more of us"
And then Philip had to go to the other side

My frisnds do not like Hamilton. i am sad

Feel like crying😭😭
Laurens’ death was by far the saddest one in the musical:
Not only did he never get to see his best friend again,
He never got to meet Philip, (who I highly believe would have been his godson)
And he never knew America was freed
And everything he worked for to free slaves died with him when all the surviving troops of his regiment were sent back to their masters.
No one can EVER convince me that any death in Hamilton was sadder than Laurens’
Edit: Whenever I’m sad now my code is going to be “I have so much work to do”
At least youtube had the mercy to not take down laurens interlude
EnabledStudios yep
They did not want to take it down because they wanted us to cry
Because this recording isn't from the official soundtrack. It's from the Off Broadway recordings

Yeah for once
31 seconds in and im already crying. But he died like 200 years ago....so why am i crying...
exactly why am I crying over something that happened 200 or more years ago. ): ): so so sad
Because he was my favorite Hamilton character... ;-;
Exactly😭😭😭
@Destiny Ellison same hereeeeeee and seeing everyones reactions broke me
Aren’t we all...
“I have so much work to do....” it’s even sadder when you hear how we said that. He was going to cry but knew he couldn’t because him being strong meant that Eliza would be too....
In case y’all aren’t crying enough:
When Laurens died, Alex described his death as “his greatest wound of the war”
Edit: Well, this comment blew up

What's the real heartbreaker? The last thing Lauren's ever uttered was,
"Tomorrow they'll be more of us."
me, watching the hamilfilm, thinking laurens interlude was a deleted song: **sees eliza in the back with a letter**

yo i think the song here and in the film was different like the contents was kinda different and i dont think it was mentioned in this vid that it was from his father like eliza just said its not from john laurens........ right?

@Angela Basurto YOU DIDN'T-
In the play Phillip and Lauren’s were played by the same guy. It was just so funny to me because I was trying to imagine a 9 year old when him and Alexander stood at the same height. Then Phillip died. THEY KILLED HIM TWICE IN THE SAME PLAY
@@paisleighyt6153 STAWP NAUR-
Heres if your not crying enough, here's johns whole story:
When he was a kid he lived near a slave prison, and he was friends with two of them, and one was even named John feill, And the other, was Xavier Harring.
He met Lafayette and Hamilton, but never actually met Mulligan
yeah im crying thx
Wait I so sorry for saying this but if you notice at 0:18, it says "It's from John Laurens, I'll read it later". That means John always send Hamilton love letters.
I luv history
😁😍😍😘
Hamilton has actually said I love you in a letter actually
He was my favorite! They should have been together!
