Every Saturday is cleaning day in my apartment for all my turtle tanks, and sometimes for my planted tanks (2 Walstads and 1 ecotank). I tend not to take videos because so many people don't understand blackwater tanks, or just a planted tank in general, and I don't want to hear/read the nasty comments calling me a bad fishkeeper. Even if I explain aloud and in comments that I'm aware one of my bettas is bloated and that I have her on a diet to deal with it and it's getting better, there's still gonna be some idiot telling me off or pointing it out like as if I don't freaking know.
Plant balance is a really tricky thing. Any time I've had plants die suddenly, due to pH/KH issues or another water quality problem, some other plant like a floater will overpopulate then another plant dies and it becomes a vicious cycle. To combat this, what I did in my 16 gallon was replace plants, but also added in a second type of floating plant. Instead of just dwarf water lettuce, I now have giant duckweed (easier to maintain than evil duckweed), so the lettuce has competition. I also keep a combination of fast and medium growth plants, that way they aren't all sucking up nutrients at the same time. A strong filter plus not overfeeding helps too.

Fantastic videos, you're my first choice for fish videos. Love how you keep it relaxed, you don't "polish" your videos, keep the bloopers, show your mistakes. You have probably forgotten more about fish keeping than most of us ever knew, but you can talk to a total beginner, a seasoned expert, and everyone else in between. Don't change your style, it's perfect. Great to relax watching your videos, or to use them for educational purposes.
Always recommend your videos to anyone interested in fish.
All the best for the year ahead, looking forward to more great videos

I think this is one of the best videos you've done, at least I find it one of the most interesting and my favorite. It's really in alignment with what your vision is for your channel; teaching and just walking through all the information that's required to live with aquariums on going. The deep dive into all the issues and all the dynamics is really helpful and appreciated. Thank you.❤

I also love the "nature styled tanks". Even though I really can enjoy aquascaping videos at youtube and found inspiration from them, and from photos and so on, I want my own tanks to be... natural. And easy to keep healthy. I like low tech, lot of plants, a few fish, shrimps, some snails... And if there's a little bit of algae, well the shrimps will be happy. I think it's a big difference between "having algae" and "having an algae-problem"! If you have a problem with them, I think of the tanks that's more algae than plants, or when the water turns green and murky, or when there's cyano bacteria everywhere. But I mean. A little bit of non-harming algae on a rock or on the glass, that's not a problem other than eventually the esthetics.

Dwarf chain loaches! I really want to get them but so hard to find in a store. I ended up with several yoyo loaches, now nowhere to put the dwarfs. I really gotta stop settling for a fish when I know it isn't exactly what I want. Yoyos are crazy busy active fish, but missing that crazy pattern of chains.
Also really love the stand for your tank that has the ridge above bottom of the tank. That style doesn't seem to be readily available in the US to often. Just having that little edge surround detail adds so much to the setup!

    Some video ideas :
I would love to see you lightly plant a tank with 5-6 types of plants. possibly show how long it takes to fill out the tank over time.
I'd also love to see a second hand challenge. See if you can build a tank found cheap used. And source plants from Facebook market place. Bring in a total under $150 Canadian whatever that is in pounds.

we started a ~Fluval Roma 240 Axo tank. inspired by your Shaker 345. we popped 30 or my shrimp culls in. 3 WCM and 3 Endler guppies. 2 WCM left and atleast 6 berried Shrimp. Limnophila, Val, Salvinia floaters, Java Fern and a few variants of swords. some Xmas Moss too. its a Salvinia Farm, we only have 2 Lotyls in there, one male Mature ish *pre-teen to young adult, original colours) and a Teen Lucy pink (just as the colour of the Axo-Safe product from NT Labs). I am so glad that you shared that tank, as we love our Salvinia Farm and hungry Lotyls. idea is to wait until they both mature and see what sex the pink one is. will keep 3 max in there (not as big as yours)

Great presentation. I agree that there is a point where my aquariums have reached that optimum level of full, lush growth and are a joy to behold. It's such a shame that you can't freeze that moment in time... But a week later; it's time to go in with the chainsaw 😂
PS. Ember Tetras... I have come to the conclusion that they have an absolute preference for lush vegetation all the way to the front of the aquarium. I have one tank that is heavily planted like this, except for one front corner, which has a slightly more open area... Guess where the Ember Tetras prefer hanging out? Yup, they are NOT interested in being anywhere near that slightly open bottom, even though that side of the tank has lush overhead floating plants. I would assume they are happier with the option of instantly diving down into that lower vegetation to escape any possible risk?
Conversely, the X-ray Tetras in the same tank seem to be quite happy with that open area.

    • @FishShopMatt
      @FishShopMatt  9 місяців тому

Thank you! Yeah I haven't got time to get the chainsaw out every week hahaha.
I had the same issue with green neons they did not like the open water. But to be fair most of the fish we keep are bottom of the food chain so I don't blame them for hiding hahaha.

Lookin great brotha! I love when the tanks settle into a homeostasis. Have you thought of doing a full nature style with a plethora of microfauna so you barely have to use food? I am adding some after this ich treatment is done with 😊💜🦖

Hey Matt, would you consider doing a video on what do to when your fish spawn and you don't want them to? Our angelfish have been very busy, and we don't have room for another tank! One of our favourite channels btw!

Any issues with the festivums going after smaller fish, neons, ottos, etc? Thinking of adding some to a planted 75. Love the channel!

Hi Matt thanks for showing your tanks in their day to day state, it gave me hope with my little bowl (35litre) which is suffering with hair algae and now hydra! I learnt whilst watching your video I can use liquid Co2 to manage algae!
I'm in Australia so we don't have Armano Shrimp to attack the hair algae problem I'm coping with. Our closest is a Northern Territory algae eating shrimp which I've put a few into my bowl and are slowly eating the hair algae which is still there after I've pulled out as much as I can.
My next problem is Hydra, how do I get rid of them?
    Thanks for your videos.

Can I mix Amano shrimp and Cherry? I have a cherry shrimp tank that I struggle to keep algae down in. Great Vid as always. Thanks Matt.

Love your tanks, Matt. I have a hard time with Java Fern as well. It is the only plant that consistently dies off on me. No idea why.

So much inspiration to your tanks! What would your process be for introducing new fish to an already existing community tank? Especially when they're coming from tanks with unknown water and possible diseases at the LFS. Quarantining fish seems to be a little unrealistic due to space and a lack of a second established tank for them to temporarily live in

Thank you! Yeah I've never had an issue just be careful of the doses and if worried go for a half dose.

@FishShopMatt what kind of snails do you currently have in the Fluval Shaker or plan on introducing? My java fern took a while to acclimate to my cold tank.

Hi Matt, how would you set up a filter with a CO2 inline diffuser and a UV clarifier? Both would go on the outlet, but not sure if the water would go through the UV first or the CO2?

How do you keep the Crypts small? :) Sixty years I have been keeping fish and Crypts have taken over every tank I put them in, no matter the lighting. I must have thrown out a few tons of them over the years and the two tanks I have up and running just now are planted with the 'original' plants and they are up to and over the surface of a 4 foot long 18 inch deep tank lit by two 42 inch fluorescent tubes. Even with one tube, or even the old incandescent bulbs, they took over previous tanks. No CO² and plane gravel, that is original from forty to sixty years ago, without additives.

"Nobody told me how to throw hoses through your home this way". ... Seriously, though, ... IF a person had a single aquarium in their front room (OK, let's pretend it's their 1st week). How to transport water, for water changes ???? ((Invest in water pumps or permanent tubing or retractable tubing... all have storage problems. AT the Matt/MD studio, you guys have a watterbutt ((great, if the space like), How about if only feeding 3 tanks maximum. Waterbutt redundant, and back to hoses thru house... or what ??? Questions .... Main question - Buckets, hoses, or waterbutt , THANKS :)
