Just a thought on the Emperor's. Could it been from a sudden temperature change? As that tank appears to often get a lot of direct sunlight (unless if it's just the time of day you happen to film it but in a lot of videos it's getting direct sun). And you noted you had recently been getting a lot of low sun the last week. In the summer yes it was getting a lot of sun but because it was getting more sun consistently the temperature of the tank is less likely to cool back down to the room temperature. Basically because it was constantly getting blasted it kept the temperature higher but still more consistent. But as it went a period of getting less sun then it would if cooled back down to room temperature and stayed at that temp for a few weeks then all if a sudden get a load of sun again causing a dramatic temperature increase. With the dramatic temperature increase it could either been the temp change itself, reduced oxygen in the water or both which lead to them getting stressed. Then them being a tank strain/more inbred fish making them more susceptible to stress/illness it could of either triggered the Angelfish carrying theory (though personally I still don't think that's the most likely cause). Or if water temp was suddenly spiked and stressed them out it can cause fish to shed their slime coat causing their skin to be valnurable & stress them out even more making them at risk of bacterial infections (plus at higher water temp the bacteria can multiply extremely quickly). With them being more delicate then the other inhabitants it would make sense for them to be the only ones affected where the others could cope better with the change in conditions. I'd personally give that more consideration/investigation then assume the Angelfish being the cause. Just given you had those Angelfish a long time, the other Tetra's being fine in the tank they were previously in plus while being more delicate they're hardy enough to regularly sold in shops and kept in tanks with other species and the same water systems as many others.
Heres a thought, why don’t you source one or two amazing antique Victorian, Art Nouveau or Art Deco aquariums/vivariums to mix up the tank room style a bit? I have two really interesting antique aquariums; one being a 40-ish gal Art Nouveau rectangular tank with a bronze egret statue in each corner. The other is a large 125-ish gal octagonal tank with a center “island” that includes a cool bullfrog fountain. I purchased them a while ago and had to refurbish both a bit but they’re museum quality and well worth it. If I was able to find these beauties within a 100-mile radius of NYC you should have very little trouble locating amazing antique tanks in Europe simply because it’s waaay older than the US. Ive actually seen a few spectacular ones at estate auctions in London and Paris. The octagonal tank was actually available through a (Sears & Roebuck?) mail-order catalogue up until the early 1900s, a fact which blew my mind! Just a thought... Oh, a YT video exists of someone with the same octagonal tank up & running. The dude has IMMENSE angelfish, discus and -believe it or not approx a dozen mixed male & female bettas (that get along.) The owner cites the shape of the tank, the fact that it’s heavily planted (& has dither fish) as the reason.
Have to be honest. MD and Matt, you guys do an amazing job and I really appreciate the fact that you don’t sugarcoat your videos and are real with what you do. Thank you for amazing channels and keep the videos coming!
It's things I've wanted to do for a long time but never had the time. I now have extra hours to be able to do all the extra things to tie everything in.
@@MDFishTanks haha dont lie, MD. You have stated mutliple times before that you like the chaos of just random size tanks and tankstands. I am not letting you get away with this. ;)
@@Frankje01 haha. yeah that was definately an excuse for laziness of not wanting to build anything. The gallery at ADG in America is actually what first put the thought in my head to be honest. Was thinking how good jungle style tanks would like in a clean lined and clean coloured environment.
If you are worried about racking being level, put mortar between the bottom two bricks, get the 2nd brick up level with a rubber mallet and a spirit level.
Honestly, I love how the studio has ended up. Considering how relatively small the studio is it's amazing how many tanks you were able to fit, but it still doesn't seem cramped at all in there!
Another great video, I really love the 'banter' between the pair of you, lol. As for the 10ft tank, instead of going for large fish (which is a great idea anyway) how about doing a HUGE micro eco-system for multiple sized fish. Having that amount of room in the tank could easily replicate a traverse section of a S.American habitat, heavily planted c/w bogwood/mangrove swamp at one end running into a flat sanded bottom at the other end with maybe a small island of giant val in it. The tetras would love the darker planted end (just like in the wild), then the dwarf cichlids banking out from there and finally the bigger cichlids in the open section, it would make for a great show piece for the studio. 3ft of something like the 'red Devil' tank (heavily wooded for the tets) leading out into 7ft of open sand, stones and the occassional val would look breath taking. Anyhow, no matter what you decide to ultimately do I'm sure it'll look great !
I was just thinking the same thing, that would look absolutely awesome. and if you later on want to do 5 ft tanks you could always make a divider and put in the middle. But the 10 ft tank with what you described would be breathtaking and I really hope that they will do something like that
I’m really sorry for the events at the end of the video, but thank you so much for sharing the story. It’s super helpful to know things don’t always go perfectly for you either. I love how calm Matt is when talking about issues like algae bloom, sick fish, and other frustrations in the hobby. It is reassuring to know these things are sad but normal from time to time.
While I was watching this video I was thinking about how you never seem to be fighting ammonia spikes or algal blooms or any of the other seemingly normal low points of fish keeping. It was a great addition to see how you deal with some of the problems we see and to hear your thoughts on it, great video!
Take your ply wood you were using for the very top shelf and cover the ends with it on the sides so you don't see the studs you used. It will also fix the two shelves together helping it give more stability with a nice clean look
I've been watching you for years now and I now have 18 tanks. You have given me so much inspiration and I love your videos! Every time I see a new video from you I want to build another tank lol. Thank you for being honest and telling us what goes on behind the scenes good and bad. It's reality and you aren't just showing what people want to see. Looking forward to seeing how your saltwater journey goes, I have been wanting to get into saltwater! Keep up the amazing videos!!
I haven't been watching long, four days I think :), but I am enjoying the videos. This video sparked a memory. My tank had been set up for over a year and was completely healthy both fish and plants. I bought two Angels from my local Maidenhead Aquatics and put them in the tank. Next day two fish were dead, during the day another two. I noticed white patches across their backs. I have kept fish for sixty years so I recognised White Saddle Back (Columnaris disease). I dived down to my local Pets At Home, it was closest, and got treatment and added it. The Two Angels died but I saved the rest of the fish in the tank. Lesson learned and I have set up an old tank I had and now use it as a quarantine tank. Four years on and the fish left are still thriving :)
I badly need a big racking for my livingroom but i havent figure out yet all the tanks that i will keep there. Is nice to see that you are still DIY-ing things like at the beggining ❤
Shame about the tetras. It's always kinda devastating to lose that many in a short span and wishing you could've foreseen it. The Red Devil tank is inspirational. You gotta get more photos and reel of it, man.
The tetras you lost weren't Emperor tetras (Nematobrycon palmeri) they were Royal / Kerri tetra (Inpaichthys kerri). They're an absolute pain for bacterial infections like matt said namely columnaris or aeromonas/ pseudomonas strains which can wipe tanks out as quickly as you've experienced. After acclimating or adding new stock to tanks with these I'd recommend a course of water life myaxzin to try avoid this issue. Acriflavin on its own can be effective too. Just a thought, tho, was this tank the one that gets no water changes, could have also been a KH crash causing the PH to crash?
I’m sorry about your Emperor Tetras, what a bummer. I appreciate your candor though, it’s helpful to know about something like a bacterial infection and to know it can happen even to seasoned pros. Great video, thank you.
hi MD, maybe you can have 1 row of aquariums, where you invite other youtubers/contant creaters, for them to make a scape in your big room. would make a interesting video and brings different styles/creations in the room
Be careful if that is a plastic lid Matt put on the reef tanks. Plastic will block the UV light that some corals need. I think Serpa even had the same problem setting up his big reef tank. Glass lids won’t block the UV light.
That’s right Serpa design lost all his corals because of the plastic lid but what he used wasn’t clear he uses that material on his reptiles enclosures built as well if I’m not mistaken I think he made a lid out of clear acrylic
The backdrop tank will look amazing. I have that in my livingroom. It's a great height for viewing, but for maintenance I'm using a stepladder and extra long grabber tools.
was searching online for cheap raised lights and came across all pond solutions, was happy with my find then come watch your video to chill out and boom, you got the exact lights linked in the bio. glad i wasted my time lmao
Another great video! The channel was/is great but with the both of you and Matt's knowledge, the channel is definitely fire. Just a viewer from Colorado Springs, Colorado.
As usual great video. However can I tell you how many times my tank has been affected by adding new fish? My recent infection was exactly what you experienced but I didn’t have the severe loss that you did. The reason I’m talking about this is because I was thinking about quitting because I thought I did something wrong. Watching this video made me feel better. If it can happen to you guys then I feel like I’m doing ok. Hope that makes sense. Thanks for your honesty.
MD I love your honesty and with Matt’s theory it was a great learning experience. I love you two together. But I have a major issue. Please please take down that tall and very unsafe storage rack near Matt’s desk. It scares me. And maybe after todays video you both should be wearing hard hats.
@1:33 i would like you to try the father fish method. its similar to walstad. mix of actual dirt/soil, capped with sand, no chemicals except removing any metals in the water. no fertilizer. no beneficial bacteria
One thing you might have done, and for the future, is to dose the tank your moving the fish to. A single dose of antibiotic in sufficient proportion to the water column may be enough. Consider it prophylaxis.
Sorry to hear about your tetra loss. I had something similar happened when I moved a plant from one tank to another. One of my harlequins got an infection, I treated the fish for 3 days before putting him back in the tank and he still died. Even if you would have caught the infection, not sure anything could have been done to stop the loss.
It is always a good habit to treat the fish first that will be introduced to an established tank with existing community. Even if the fish came from another established tank so you can lessen the cross contamination issues. It will not eliminate it totally but it can lessen. It happens to a lot of keepers and is still disheartening everytime.
I would absolutely love to have all that green water to feed to my freshwater clams and muscles. They would clean it up in a little bit of no time. I'm really glad you share the failures with us. While it is sad to hear of a mass die-off, we learn (and you also learn) from the mistakes. It would be fantastic if there were some sort of way by which we could share all our mistakes and problems with you and your audience so that we could all learn even more, but neither time nor the technology currently available permits it. Can't wait to see how that tiger lotus turns out. Next you'll have to try Victoria lilies. In a nano tank.
Man, I hate that feeling when you see that colour in the tank you haven't seen before, and it's the silver underside of a fish. It's like - oh no... that shouldn't be visible! Sorry to hear about the Emperors! Poor little guys, they looked so good in that tank too.
I had this happen to a group of cherry barbs. I did a wc and i used my outside hose the water was colder than i thought the cherry barbs all got ick and died. I had angelfish rummynose acaras and gold barbs didn't loose any of those very weird
I had a similar thing happened in one of my 15 gallons but with celestial pearl danios as opposed to purple emperor tetras. I have amano shrimps, otocinclus (they even had babies twice now), red phantom tetras in there, they are all fine and thriving, so are the plants. But my CPDs are more fragile. I lost a couple, got new ones so that I always have a group of 8 but usually only half of the new batch makes it. They turn up dead exactly like you experienced. One day they're fine, the next they die and look patchy. My tank is almost a year old, my parameters are stable, I do 25% water changes every week. There must be a type of normally occurring bacteria in my tank(s) that CPDs are more sensitive to. I have a total of 3 tanks with shrimps in all of them and it's really only the CPDs that seem affected.
I'd consider tying those blocks together and anchoring the shelves to the wall. I'm not sure how rare earthquakes are over there, but it'd be quite dangerous to be standing next to that during one if it isn't properly anchored.
2x8fts thanks Nipper and Beefy. They are a required point of difference from all the other tanks. I literally must insist on a mounted altum or discus with geophagus and an African cichlid tank.

For the time being...You could possibly step the blocks towards the wall.
Instead of burning your mismatched stands, how about adding an inexpensive tank & set up, then donating them to a classroom, or to a bedridden/ handicapped child or adult to enjoy? Could some stains and sealants be dangerous when burned? BTW- Matt, you are an INCREDIBLE addition to this channel! I love watching and listening to you guys! Cheers from 🇺🇲➡️🇬🇧✌🏻❤🙏🏻🎉

Just given you had those Angelfish a long time, the other Tetra's being fine in the tank they were previously in plus while being more delicate they're hardy enough to regularly sold in shops and kept in tanks with other species and the same water systems as many others.

was searching online for cheap raised lights and came across all pond solutions, was happy with my find then come watch your video to chill out and boom, you got the exact lights linked in the bio. glad i wasted my time lmao
Is leaning on tanks recommended?
Paint the cinder blocks white (or black) with some rubber paint.
Them breeze blocks would look awesome painted white to match the walls xxx
Great update video! And I must say ai am excited for the 8 foot tank. I agree it would look amazing when you walk in!
Another great video! The channel was/is great but with the both of you and Matt's knowledge, the channel is definitely fire. Just a viewer from Colorado Springs, Colorado.
Fun, interesting, great looking scapes, each subtly unique.
Great work guys, looking great, sorry about the tetras unlucky
As usual great video. However can I tell you how many times my tank has been affected by adding new fish? My recent infection was exactly what you experienced but I didn’t have the severe loss that you did. The reason I’m talking about this is because I was thinking about quitting because I thought I did something wrong. Watching this video made me feel better. If it can happen to you guys then I feel like I’m doing ok. Hope that makes sense. Thanks for your honesty.
Love the new additions. I am so sorry about the loss of fish, so sad.
matt is a brilliant actor. he was brilliant as small hands guy in scary movie 2. and guy with hives in that something about Mary. 😆...
MD I love your honesty and with Matt’s theory it was a great learning experience. I love you two together. But I have a major issue. Please please take down that tall and very unsafe storage rack near Matt’s desk. It scares me. And maybe after todays video you both should be wearing hard hats.
Omg I nearly wet myself when Matt did his Bellamy impression!
That was a good point about cross contamination I had the same thing happened in my tank.
Do whatever you wanna do,
but don't mess with timmy's tank
@1:33 i would like you to try the father fish method. its similar to walstad. mix of actual dirt/soil, capped with sand, no chemicals except removing any metals in the water. no fertilizer. no beneficial bacteria
Some moss art would look good in the studio
Love the archer tank!! 😃
Mudskipper tank soon please!! 🙏🏿🙏🏿
Hey I like this idea!
This would be awesome
Matt is the New David Attenborough “In the jungle” 😄👍
Love your videos MD and Fish shop Matt!
One thing you might have done, and for the future, is to dose the tank your moving the fish to.
A single dose of antibiotic in sufficient proportion to the water column may be enough.
Consider it prophylaxis.
I love this idea what did you actually get and how much did it cost?
Sorry to hear about your tetra loss. I had something similar happened when I moved a plant from one tank to another. One of my harlequins got an infection, I treated the fish for 3 days before putting him back in the tank and he still died. Even if you would have caught the infection, not sure anything could have been done to stop the loss.
If you are doing the 8 foot high up against the back wall then it needs to stand out and be a statement piece.
I love the candidness. Keep up the great vids. 👍
Consider getting an enclosed trailer, park it out front and put all your supplies in it. It would give a lot of new space
space is a major issue in the UK..
Absolutely love the red devil and cardinal tank. It is my favorite in the studio.
try algae grass aquarium... I'll take some time but so beautiful when it happens ❤
How interested would you be in scaping a 400 gallon+ aquarium in northern indiana?
You should put some lazer cory's in the neon/angelfish tank. That would make it complete.
It is always a good habit to treat the fish first that will be introduced to an established tank with existing community. Even if the fish came from another established tank so you can lessen the cross contamination issues. It will not eliminate it totally but it can lessen. It happens to a lot of keepers and is still disheartening everytime.
How would you get a 10' tank in the room? Most 10ft are 120"x36"x48 well over 1200 pounds glass or 600 pounds acrylic. will it fit through the door?
Great video! I would say you should call it macro algae in the salt water tank. I hope you do sting rays in the 8 footer. Wishful thinking
You should try to make a scape on top of new shelves that incorporates the ledges behind them.
Man, I hate that feeling when you see that colour in the tank you haven't seen before, and it's the silver underside of a fish. It's like - oh no... that shouldn't be visible! Sorry to hear about the Emperors! Poor little guys, they looked so good in that tank too.
I always had smile whenever your video uploaded ☺️ ❤
thanks for that MD and MT sir 🙏
What species of catfish is is the siclids talk near the front door? It’s not scared at all just a raw five foot tank.
I havent watched you for too long but id love to see u do a forest scene tank
Please do 2 5ft tanks. As I have a 5ft scaped tank but it gives me an excuse to rescape 🤪🤣
for one of the new scapes you should try a wood hard scape only . let see what you can come up with using only wood and some sand.
Don't burn theold stands! Do a giveaway ❤️
An MD fish tank stand!!!
I’ve got a UV steriliser, just like that one in my tank and it is brilliant
Looking good, lads 👍
Awesome, thanks for fixing the audio!
Realy love theese DIY vids
Matt you have to do the tap thingy( 3 taps) before you feed the fish.. 😂😂
Is there then something that you can put into the tank beforehand, to stop a bacterial infection when putting in new fish?
I can't wait to see that 8 foot. And go high please. Planted also, 😁
you guys need ah MD van.....
Yay! Matt got his desk back.
I'd consider tying those blocks together and anchoring the shelves to the wall. I'm not sure how rare earthquakes are over there, but it'd be quite dangerous to be standing next to that during one if it isn't properly anchored.
Very, very rare to have any that we feel :)
We have them but like it’s probably been 10 years since the last one anyone actually felt properly and even then, I doubt it would topple them at all
To get rid of these green algae floating in the water is good stuff . This is "Aquel green algae stopper, Aquel".
With the top layer taken off, you could put it to the left of the double stack, so you would have a step effect of tanks
Do two 4 foot tanks connected by an above tank tunnel system, if you know what I mean. And scape them both totally opposite.
Seeing as you're getting into the larger tanks, you should do at least one monster fish tank. Giving people an idea of how big some fish can get.
Just point them to Ohio Fish Rescue for anything monster fish
@@Amanda-uc5jq Yes, good point
2x8fts thanks Nipper and Beefy. They are a required point of difference from all the other tanks. I literally must insist on a mounted altum or discus with geophagus and an African cichlid tank.
Love the video thanks MD and Matt❤
I am praying that one of your future projects with 8ft will be with discus 😉 fingers crossed 😊
what make is your uv internal filter
