I LOVED that you made the spring rolls and they didn't turn out the way you had hoped. We need to see that you're human too, and real, and don't live in a shiny, perfect, scripted social media world all the time. Your realness and personality make you stand out from all the other UA-cam personalities (especially in the vegan community where everyone is a pretentious health Nazi 24/7). And I so appreciate how you salvaged your "failed" recipe and made it into something good. Thank you. This video is an utter win. P.S.: I'm in love with the sped up knife sounds.
That's exactly why your what I ate in a day videos are the only ones I watch, Lauren. The relaxing atmosphere that you give off and just the general style your videos are is super relaxing and make them all the more entertaining to watch!
honestly I think the greatest part of this series isn't the vegan recipes, but how you always manage to avoid throwing things away. it's a serious issue in the world, how much good food people waste, and this series is pretty inspiring for me on that front.
Rice paper and spring roll wrappers are two different things, rice paper is for making rice paper rolls aka summer rolls and spring rolls wrappers are pastry that can be deep fried or baked.
You can deep fry them of course but it doesn't turn out like a spring roll, it just bubbles up like yours did which is not that appealing haha, I found all this out the hard way like you did! Love your vids :)
+Lauren Toyota there is a way of doing it - you can leave them to dry for a bit so they hold better if they are too soggy the fall apart. :) and you shouldnt leave them in the pan too long it should have a light brown colour hope this helps!
If you want to fry them you need to roll them smaller and tighter. The outside of the wrapper gets real bubbly and crispy, and the inside retains some chewiness and holds your filling. You should only use about 2-3 tbsp of filling.
+พาสต้า พาสตี้ พาสตู้ no actually it is made for both. It's Vietnamese. Vietnamese people use it to make fresh summer rolls to eat like that and fry. The original egg roll is made out of rice paper. Thanks.
The nymag article is actually how I found your channel!! I can't stop watching your 'What I ate In a Day' videos ever since, they are the best! I also think your 'Recipe?!' videos are brilliant, so refreshing to see how real life cooking is like :) Keep up the awesome work, Lauren!
In that article, this quote caught my eye: “'Both mukbang and these UA-cam videos, they’re kind of cashing in on a massive cultural anxiety around food rather than actually empowering people to feel more comfortable about how and what they eat,' Rousseau said." I DO think mukbang and WIEIAD videos are empowering people to feel more comfortable about how and what we eat! Is Rousseau kidding me? If it wasn't for all these WIEIAD videos, I wouldn't have become so aware of what I eat and become a healthier vegan! These videos literally inspire me and I write down all the recipes I love in a little folder and I try the recipes at home. I've made vegan cheese sauces, muffins, banana breads, pancakes, pizzas, smoothies/juices, granoals. And although they weren't all amazing (because I'm still learning to cook), they were super fun to try out!
j w/out romeo, what? Other people can have the last name Rousseau. Signe Rousseau is the person quoted in the article... they're a real person, it's not a joke...
I read the article! I have to say this is a phenomenon for me. I have become totally obsessed and I see myself changing habits in the kitchen. Small things like adding more spices and cooking up different random produce so it does not spoil are just some of little things I practice now. It is inspiring and that thing you look forward to watching for breakfast or while traveling to school and work.
Lauren, every time you upload a video, I think to myself "nope, it's too long, there is no way I'm watching the whole thing", and sure enough every time, I watch your video right to the end, enjoying every minute. Keep this up, you've got something good.
What that article mentioned about you is probably the reason that your 'what I eat in a day' videos are my favorite. I love how talkative and 'chatty' you are, it makes it seem like I'm getting a wieiad and a vlog all in one. WIN WIN!
Lauren, you're hilarious. I love how sometimes things are an epic fail (aka the spring rolls) and you just embrace it and redirect to a different idea. Tacos save the day!
My ultimate fav video, what I ate in a day! It oddly gave me the chills when you read the article explaining your what I ate in a day style. Your so real, keep doing what your doing! So inspiring
I'm sure you get this all the time, but for the last few days I've been binging on all of your videos and I absolutely love them. They're so relatable and entertaining. I'm so happy I found and subscribed to your channel!
my morning usually starts with mocha nice cream (usually nice and melty with chopped banana in it, like cereal), i just add coffee and cocoa powder with my nanners and some cashew milk, and its funny cause I'm sitting here eating my mocha and watching you make a smoothie with coffee. its honestly the best start to my day, way better then just drinking straight coffee in my opinion
also i bake rice paper wraps all the time and they turn out fine, i dont add oil to them either. they do end up getting soft the longer you let them sit but its crazy how much yours failed lol rice wraps were just not meant for you :P
I enjoy how personable you are, and like that chick said its like having a friend over without the energy drain! Always look forward to what ever you put up!
That is what I love about your videos. You go through your fridge and see what you can make. You don't go out and buy all new ingredients. And the end result is always AMAZING!!!
Yayyyy I love your What I Ate in a Day videos!! I love your authenticity and how you aren't afraid to put yourself out there and show that sometimes you just f'uck up (spring rolls, lol). But the recovery... LOVE IT. Also, you should definitely make a recipe/mukbang with mommy tang. Y'all are the most real people,on UA-cam so both in the same room?! Omg.
Hey Lauren! I remember you saying you watch mommytang's videos and she also makes summer rolls with rice paper. I often fry mine :) Some tips that lead to success are , you just can't soak the sheets for too long or they tear. Also instead of putting the filling in the middle of the paper, the rolling and tucking will work better if you put the filling on the edge of the sheet in a small dense pile, no need to spread it out. You need to dry it them out a little before frying and make sure your oil is definitely hot enough or the paper will melt and get too soft to fry. Hope you try making it again and succeed! The rice paper is quick to use and can compliment any vegetable and dipping sauce so well! Thank you for posting this video, I love your videos and am starting to want to slowly go back to being vegetarian. I love you!
Thanks for sharing the article! I think it's super interesting. I found your channel while looking for "What I ate" videos cause I find them very inspiring and relatable. I'm not a vegan, but have recreated several of your recipes and feel that you create food very similarly to the way I create food (lots of smelling leftovers and "Recipe?!"-ing). Anyway, glad to see you back in your kitchen.
i don't know much about those transparent looking spring rolls paper, but with tradicional spring rolls, you gotta "close" them so the filling doesn't ruin the frying step.. mix a bit of flour and water and glue the sides and the last flap so they don't open while frying
I definitely appreciate both your home and travel WIAIAD equally. Your 'home' videos are perfect as both inspiring me (and clearly many many other people) to cook and not be intimidated to try new things because you keep it real (which is also clearly appreciated by many many other people), but I also love your travel videos too because it has inspired me to search out great vegan options/make it part of the experience I'm looking for when travelling (e.g. was just in Nashville and was wishing you'd made a Nashville video of the best vegan spots! But I was still inspired to find them myself). So basically thanks for all the great vegan inspo :)
Thank you for being real! We've all had recipe disasters and I love seeing you show us that it can even happen to you. Love your videos. ( By the way, the pasta looked amazing!)
I was totally good with the what you ate in LA vids but glad to see the return of the videos in your house too. The pasta you made for dinner looked awesome 😉
Lauren I love your videos!!! And I totally agree with what the writer said, about how your videos are so relatable and realistic. You are definitely my favorite UA-camr!!
Hey Lauren! When prepping the rice paper, use warm water, dip it in, let it sit for only 4-5 seconds, take out and it will soften on its on. Do not let it get soggy in the water. When you roll the rice paper, mimic sushi rolling and tuck in both ends half way through rolling process. Finally when attempting to fry, please refrigerate them to dry out the damp skin to avoid oil splatter. Gd luck, great videos!!
Just discovered you guys and I'm loving every single video!!! I would love to see a video on how you keep your fridge and pantries clean and organized :D I'm in desperate need for some advice.
Lauren I love both of your channels. I look up to you. I was already vegan before discovering your channel but honestly you inspire so much more creativity when it comes to making food :)
Hello! This may be a stupid question, but as a person newish to hemp, I've only gone and bought the seeds and not the hearts! Is there a way of getting the little blighters out or have I wasted my money? Cheers. We LOVE both your channels, by the way. Had the macaroni cheese tonight and my cheese-head of a hubby loved it. We're moving down the vegan road!
Oh no! Ive never even seen them in the shell before raw? Or are they roasted already? cause I actually have these salted and roasted hemp seeds with the shells on them and you can eat them on salads etc.
A trick I noticed works with the asian spring rolls is to soak the rice paper, but take it out while it's still firm/al dente and it softens as it sits there while you put the ingredients. This way it's not too mushy to work with. I also don't do it on a towel/cloth, I put it on my damp cutting board and roll. I typically eat them uncooked and put fresh ingredients inside and just eat as is with a yummy sesame oil and soy sauce based sauce. I give you an A for effort in trying to fry and bake them, I always wondered about that method and now I know...lol You're so cute at the end because you can totally tell the pasta just hit the spot and you were a happy girl.
Thank you Lauren for constantly inspiring us to get creative in the kitchen and not be afraid to trust our own instincts when it comes to cooking :) you are the coolest, lol :D Lots of love and greetings from Slovenia xx
I only watch yours and Kalels "what I ate in a day" because you are both truthful and eating junk and up front honest. I does feel like have a friend and have a good laugh in just one small video to up lift the day :)
Hi from Rhode Island! (Where's that?!) This series has been a favorite of mine. Not surprised the article was published 😀 I'm eating homemade, steamy congee watching you eat your yummy pasta! Thanks to you and things I've read I've totally gone off dairy and am eating vegan more days than not-complete change for me. Thank you!
you never fail you go thru ans keep going thats what a winner does i truly enjoy your examples fun light easy thank you kindly for showing me how what yes
I like your eat in a day videos...probably the best...because they show me how to prepare vegan food, and this is really helpful. What you eat in a day seems like something I could easily do. It helps that you demonstrate how you prepare your meals. Also, I think it is great that you are a vegan who is not caught up in all the crazy drama with all those other vegans. It gives me hope when I see you drinking wine and coffee.
hi .You are so inspiring to me and I've been vegetarian for 3years and plan to go vegan. I love how you eat when you want and you don't follow a strict diet...anyways luv you
Great smoothie idea! I just so happen to have all the same ingredients ( even the day old French press 😆) and the smoothie came out great! I altered yours a bit with frozen banana and homemade coffee ice cubes since I only had 1/2 cup of coffee left. I love these videos!
Your video is very inspiring, and please do not stop chewing in your videos, it's very cute and gives your video that something like spice, and a sense of reality!
Yesss. This grounds me for some reason. Like someone else suffers slightly in the morning without coffee, and needs food at unscheduled times throughout the day to be happy!
rice spring roll paper and normal spring roll paper is different. rice spring roll paper is to be eaten directly after wrapping fillings inside. (need not be cooked) you can dip it in some sauce and eat directly.
Trick for the rice paper. when you dip them to soften, use hot water. have a bowl of water to the side and dip your finger tips so when you go to roll, your fingers don't stick as much. also, keep the filling closer to the bottom 1/3 of the wrap, fold both sides, then pull over filling and roll whilst pinching the sides. it's all in the fingertips to keep pressure and to ensure they're tight and strong. 😌 Still amazing though. "put it in a taco" 😂 yaass.
Yessss my favourite smoothie is banana, coffee, chocolate almond milk and almond butter + any additives like chia and hemp. it's the perfect combo i've found. tastes just like an iced capp from tims.
The way my family keeps it from getting too soft before wrapping it is putting the rice paper into the water for a few seconds, then taking it out while it's still the slightest bit in the round hardened form and leaving it on the plate for about 5 more seconds and it should become completely softened but in a flat even circle, ready to use for wrapping
I hate frying stuff, too, and have had the same experience of stuff blowing up in the oil. Someone told me that it's because the filling has too much liquid / is too wet. The liquid expands when it gets hot. I'm guessing trapping too much air in might be an issue, too, that wrapping them more tightly would help, too. Hope that helps, if you plan to attempt again!

If Mommy Tang is Mukbang Queen, I would said Lauren is What I Ate In A Day Rock Star.
Rice paper is not made for fry. You can eat it just that way after you soak it. or stream it.
Yes!! I love both of them! 😊❤

I love the laid back nature of your what I ate videos, honestly feel like you're a friend chatting with me while also giving me food inspo!

Lauren, you're hilarious. I love how sometimes things are an epic fail (aka the spring rolls) and you just embrace it and redirect to a different idea. Tacos save the day!
You are super real, more relatable to me as a viewer. I love your videos
I just love how you do not throw ANYTHING away! I feel physical pain when people throw perfectly good food away 💛💛💛💛💛

This is still true
"This sucks but I'll get better" Lauren these are now my words to live by
I also love how relatable you make your videos! It's refreshing and makes me feel less alone 😌
My ultimate fav video, what I ate in a day! It oddly gave me the chills when you read the article explaining your what I ate in a day style. Your so real, keep doing what your doing! So inspiring
This is why I love your "What I Eat" videos! They're so relatable, chatty and relaxed compared to other vegans! :)

I enjoy how personable you are, and like that chick said its like having a friend over without the energy drain! Always look forward to what ever you put up!
your videos are so real, not all perfectly squeaky clean like other what I eat in a day youtubers :p they make me roll my eyes, for real.
The article was so right! I love watching your videos because you're so genuine! You also give me food ideas!
hahahha Lauren I love you 😂 it was so funny watching you try to figure out your lunch
haha thanks for watching doll xo
i like watching what i ate in a day videos (especially from you) because its like 3-4 simple, casual recipes in one video
This is probably my favorite one you’ve ever done! I loved that lunch didn’t work out well and you included it anyway! Thanks for being real :)
That is what I love about your videos. You go through your fridge and see what you can make. You don't go out and buy all new ingredients. And the end result is always AMAZING!!!
Or not... Rice paper wrappers are the worst. Lol.
this video is literally my life , I always nail breakfast and dinner and for lunch I'm like wtf do I do with my life
Hahahah same! Sometimes it stresses me out so much that I just skip lunch
+Ayan right!
Omg so true! same here!
so true!
Yup! :'D
Omg.

To know if your oil is hot enough for frying, place the end of a wooden spoon into the oil and if the oil bubbles around it, it is hot enough

Thank you for being real! We've all had recipe disasters and I love seeing you show us that it can even happen to you. Love your videos. ( By the way, the pasta looked amazing!)
THanks Misty!!!
I love how you just find random leftover food in the kitchen and make a meal out of it. It always looks so good!
That Go Veggie Parm is the light in my life
Believe me or not - these videos of yours are my top fave ones on YT

I'm Vietnamese and i wanted/ almost screamed when I saw Lauren put the soaked rice paper on towel paper to roll LOL but awesome video as always :)
I was totally good with the what you ate in LA vids but glad to see the return of the videos in your house too. The pasta you made for dinner looked awesome 😉
I love your what I ate in a day videos! I always get excited when one pops up in my feed.

Glad I'm not the only one who thinks turning it into a taco solves everything! ✌🏻️
Lauren I love both of your channels. I look up to you. I was already vegan before discovering your channel but honestly you inspire so much more creativity when it comes to making food :)
THANK YOU so much Ryan!!!
Hello! This may be a stupid question, but as a person newish to hemp, I've only gone and bought the seeds and not the hearts!
Is there a way of getting the little blighters out or have I wasted my money?
Cheers.
We LOVE both your channels, by the way.

All the food you make is a recipe?! It's amazing!! I love it!! +Laurentoyota 😝
A trick I noticed works with the asian spring rolls is to soak the rice paper, but take it out while it's still firm/al dente and it softens as it sits there while you put the ingredients. It gives me hope when I see you drinking wine and coffee.
haha I appreciate that! Thank you!!!!! Wine and beer and and coffee for lyfe ;)
HAAHAHAH I was LOLing through the entire rice paper debacle. I love you Lauren!!
hi .You are so inspiring to me and I've been vegetarian for 3years and plan to go vegan. I love how you eat when you want and you don't follow a strict diet...anyways luv you
Omg I need to make that coffee smoothie!! And now I want a glass straw! wow, how cool! :)
How does one really clean a glass straw?!
I won't ;)
THESE ARE MY FAVORITE VIDEOS ON ALL OF UA-cam I LOVE YOU
I love how you show that veganism is not just eating vegetables or fruits but normal foods💕
Yesss. This grounds me for some reason. Like someone else suffers slightly in the morning without coffee, and needs food at unscheduled times throughout the day to be happy!
Super excited for your video on the carrot hotdog!!
rice spring roll paper and normal spring roll paper is different. rice spring roll paper is to be eaten directly after wrapping fillings inside. (need not be cooked) you can dip it in some sauce and eat directly.
I read the article and it was amazing your videos aren't fake and I enjoy them❤️
I don't know why but by far this is the most satisfying WIAIAD video, I love how Lauren ate that pasta! #morepastaplease
Ohh the coffee smoothie sounds really good, I definitely have to try that
Yessss my favourite smoothie is banana, coffee, chocolate almond milk and almond butter + any additives like chia and hemp. it's the perfect combo i've found. tastes just like an iced capp from tims.
you're so cute omg! but seriously, you've inspired me so much.. like I might actually teach myself to cook now
Your what I ate in a day are my favourite videos☺️❤️there really helpful
The way my family keeps it from getting too soft before wrapping it is putting the rice paper into the water for a few seconds, then taking it out while it's still the slightest bit in the round hardened form and leaving it on the plate for about 5 more seconds and it should become completely softened but in a flat even circle, ready to use for wrapping
I love your videos so much, you never fail to crack me up.
"I'm gonna go eat and watch Netflix because that is all I ever wanna do.. ever.. nothing else.." LOL. I love you.
