Planting a Fig Orchard in the Pacific Northwest Ep. 1 | Deciding on Tree Spacing and Digging Holes

  • The land is cleared and now it's time to begin planting our fig orchard. Today, we start mapping out the orchard and deciding on tree spacing and then we'll get the holes dug for planting. Despite the fact that we live in the Pacific Northwest, there are many varieties of figs that will grow well and fruit in our climate. I'm on a mission to find out which fig varieties do best in our climate when planted in ground. It may yield us thousands of figs. It may be a complete flop. Either way, we're going to learn something from it.

      There is a market for fresh figs, but they are difficult to get to market when ripe. Most people have never had a fresh fig. People around here just have to get over the fact that fresh figs are quantum levels above the dried ones you get in bags.

    Having the right tools/equipment for the job sure makes a world of difference! I have found "boulders" weighing as heavy as 220 lbs precisedly where I wanted to plant a tree in our yard, and thought it was likely to kill me before I got it out of the ground, just using hand spades. I actually used a metal detecting shovel from Grave Digger Tools, after that rock broke my oak spade handle! Well, I have put 46 fruit trees into the yard, and am out of room for any more, but without the help of tractor and rotor. Of course, I lack the space you have. The figs will have to stay potted.

      That's about how many figs I'll have in the ground when finished. I've decided to plant them on the other side of the drive too and make room for 12 more. @@MikeKincaid79 I live in Pendleton, Oregon. I think the zone is 7. Right now I have a couple of dozen figs, two of which are Olympian's. One spent the winter in my unheated but enclosed basement stairwell and it already has a breba crop and has been outside for about a month. The other one spent the winter on our south-facing driveway along with a Kodata, Laturella, and unknown. They are all leafing out with leaf buds on all the limbs except for the tips which fried. I also have 7 fig bushes planted throughout my yard. They die back to the crown each year but are exploding out of the ground as we speak. Figs are a lot tougher than they are given credit for. I also have a Petite Negri, which in the name of science, I put in my hydroponic tomato growing system. This will be its 5th year and last year it gave me over 200 figs, this year I potted it up to a much larger pot, so who knows. What I learned from the hydro experiment is that figs love nutrients (they are hogs) and they don't mind having their roots wet all the time at least in the hydroponic system. You have an ideal set-up. P.S. Shaded figs will just grow bigger leaves than unshaded figs, they are quite adaptable that way, but they may not ripen figs as well.

Other than that, I should hate you for your luck with figs! :) I have 2, but on this little lot, citrus, a cherry, jujube, 4 grapes, lots of garden in 'tween. Also, some tobacco tree seedlings that I hope will be given away tomorrow. the mama is getting long in the tooth (4 years old now) and I can keep one to replace her.

      We talked about rhododendrons as a border hedge originally but decided to plant another row of figs. When leafed out, they'll be all the hedge I need. I hope I do have good luck with them in ground, haven't tried that one yet. I guess time will tell.

      @@MikeKincaid79 I think it is wisdom that when you are considering an investment [your orchard], that you consider all the variables. In your case, full Sun is a necessary variable, therefore if you choose to plant one where it is only getting partial Sun it may not be a good investment. I was always taught that if you're going to make a investment be sure that your investment will give you a return ! If you risk plantng a tree that doesn't produce enough fruit you will not get the return you desire and it will not be a good investment. I hope this helps Mike. I appreciate your videos. Hi, Mike! A bit off thread, but last week I purchased a Purple Ghost Japanese Maple. Not many good reviews, and it was pricey, but I wanted it! It came today, and it looks pretty good. It's grafted on an unknown root stock. There are three shoots just below the graft. My gut says to snip them off. What do you think?

    • @MikeKincaid79
      @MikeKincaid79  3 роки тому +1

      Yes, snip the growth off below the graft. It's just suckers from the root stock and you don't want that. Those suckers will just sap energy that could go into the top growth.

    Hi Mike. I like your channel very much. I have one fig tree in a large pot on the patio. It does fruit but the squirrels get them all. I have tried netting the tree and all kinds of repellents. Any ideas? Is this a problem you will have where you are?

    • @MikeKincaid79
      @MikeKincaid79  3 роки тому

      LOL, yeah, that's a problem for everyone. Some people use net, some put individual bags on each fig. Harvey has a recorded bird call that scares birds away. My plan is a shock and awe campaign. I plan to have so many figs that they just can't eat them all, haha.

    Mulch is a good idea not only around the trees, but threw out the entire area. Grass is a bad idea. You want to make it more like a forest. Permaculture would be the best way to go, if you've done any research on that. I would love to have a machine at my house. I only have a shovel and me.

    • @MikeKincaid79
      @MikeKincaid79  3 роки тому

      I've looked into it a little. The only problem with permaculture is that it still has to be maintained or it will grow out of control with weeds and make it no fun to move through. So to solve that problem, you have to mow the area, weather it's grass or weeds. I won't have the time to walk around and hand chop all the weeds. If you plant other smaller shrubs around the figs, you will have a hard time getting to the figs for pruning. Maybe my thinking is flawed, I'm sure it is on some level. I do like the permaculture ideas but I also like the idea of my beautifully manicured fig orchard. I have thought about planting stawberries at the base of the fig trees. That would be a start in the permaculture direction.
