      Between steel and aluminum, steel would be the one you could get longer life out of. It can be repaired if needed which is going to be the biggest plus towards longevity.

    I've heard that aluminum bikes feel dead after some years, is this true? Will we see 20-30 year old aluminum bikes for sale like we see old steel bikes for sale now a days?

    • @YourFavoriteCyclist
      @YourFavoriteCyclist  4 роки тому +1

      I've never felt like my aluminum bikes feel dead, however I could potentially see that happening as the metal goes through different forces while being ridden.
      Sadly I don't think old aluminum bikes will ever quite have the value of a solid old steel bike.

    I am confused on which bike to buy.... I am from India and I am guessing my choices between Polygon cascade 2, Frog dupiter or Upgrade weapon.... I am confused between what type of frame to go for..... None of them is "Steel" They are all "Alloy steel" And the polygon one is "alloy aluminum"........ I am a bit concerned regarding the durability of aluminum as I have heard that it is frail and breaks quickly..... I am looking for a long term cycle (at least 5 years) and I have had past experience with a steel alloy MTB bike.... It was my Hercules rodeo and It got rusted after just ONE monsoon season (the rain season) after being left out in the open. I am so CONFUSED 😵.... Which one should I pick???

    • @YourFavoriteCyclist
      @YourFavoriteCyclist  3 роки тому +1

      So "alloy steel" is essentially a steel frame bike, its slightly better than the more common "carbon steel", being slightly less weight and slightly more rust resistant. "Alloy aluminum" is going to be your standard aluminum frame. The vast majority of my bikes are aluminum frames and I haven't had any issues any with some heavy abuse through mountain biking, the oldest one being 10+ years old and still works fine. I'm familiar with the rainy season (lived in Hawaii for 8 years) and how it can kill a steel bike, so if you're looking for a bike to not rust in those conditions, the aluminum would be the way to go.

    Sir,.
    Thanks for your video.
    Am confused between steel and alloy 6061 cycle of same brand getting at same price. But will alloy frame last as long as steel? Like 15 20 years or so
    Though this cycle is mtb but I will mostly use for city road. What do you recommend?

    • @YourFavoriteCyclist
      @YourFavoriteCyclist  3 роки тому +1

      It's interesting that a steel and alloy frame are the same price. The alloy frame should last just as long as a steel frame. For mostly city riding the weight difference going with aluminum would be noticable so that's what I would go with.

    • @Mottleydude1
      @Mottleydude1 2 роки тому

      A 6061 Alu frame will simply not last as long as a good quality steel frame. Particularly if you ride a lot. Some materials like carbon fiber composites and aluminum have fatigue strength significantly lower than steel.
      This means these materials can only take so many stress cycles and they will fail.
      Steels fatigue strength is high enough that it has an unlimited number of stress cycles and will not fatigue or fail. You literally have to stress steel to it’s failure point for it to fail.
      That is not the case with carbon fiber composites or Aluminum Alloys. Given enough cycles of stress both will eventually fail. Steel will not.
      There is a catch though. Steel is more susceptible to corrosion and can fail due to corrosion. However corrosion is easily prevented in a quality steel bike frame.
      So yes a quality steel frame will last significantly longer than either a carbon or aluminum frame if properly taken care of.
      Having said that even though quality carbon and aluminum frames are not as durable as a quality steel frame they are still pretty darned durable and will probably outlast your bikes components and those will last years if taken care of properly.
      Once you’re in that situation and due to advances and changes that occur you will often find it’s more cost affective to buy a new bike then replacing the wheels and components.
      Having said that I have a 1993 Schwinn Paramount Steel frame bike that I’ve had to completely replace the components twice in those 29 years. It is by all measures still a superb riding bike.
      But to answer your question it depends on the quality of the steel frame. If the steel frame is standard 1040 CroMo with no butting and the frame price is equal go with the 6061 Alu frame.
      If the steel frame is a high end tube set like a Reynolds 853 and the frame prices are the same go with the steel. The aluminum frame will be a little lighter but the ride quality, durability, customization and other factors will be superior.
      More than likely the higher end steel will cost more than an Aluminum 6061 but will probably be a better bike.

    hi, about the carbon frame you are talking, is it the same with the High carbon steel? which is better? alloy or high carbon steel?

    • @YourFavoriteCyclist
      @YourFavoriteCyclist  3 роки тому +1

      The carbon frame I'm talking about is carbon fiber. Carbon steel is just a fancy way of saying it's a standard steel frame. Alloy is going to be an aluminum frame. Each has its pros and cons like I say in the video.

    • @YourFavoriteCyclist
      @YourFavoriteCyclist  3 роки тому +4

      Thanks for watching! You will have to pedal around a bit more weight with a steel bike, however for a first bike, a steel frame is a nice way to go. They are a lot more forgiving and ride a lot smoother than an aluminum frame. Between the two frames as long as both are good quality materials you'll notice a difference in weight between steel and aluminum.

    I payed 240 dollars for my aluminuim bike. Will the frame last. I dont any trail riding or harsh tricks and jumping none of that. I just ride around town. But can it still fail after years or could it have the potential to last forever if i continue doing what i do

      @YourFavoriteCyclist  4 роки тому +1

      I've been riding my bikes (all of which are aluminum) pretty hard for at least the past 10 years for what I still own. No issues with the frames at all.
      Generally even on an inexpensive bike the frame will be the good quality portion with all of the other components being the cheaper quality. Always gives you a good platform to upgrade on later.

    • @YourFavoriteCyclist
      @YourFavoriteCyclist  4 роки тому +2

      Durability wise I would have to say either steel or carbon. Modern carbon is pretty beefy stuff, I think it was either Skills with Phil or Seth Bike Hacks that did a carbon torture test and it stood up pretty well.
      Now if we're talking middle of nowhere and your chainstay breaks for whatever reason, anybody with a welder can repair your steel frame, good luck with your carbon frame!

    What's the difference in flex across the frames?

    • @YourFavoriteCyclist
      @YourFavoriteCyclist  4 роки тому

      Steel is going to have the most flex, makes it ride a little smoother. Aluminum is pretty rigid, doesn't flex too much at all hence a rougher ride. I wouldn't say carbon neccessarily has flex to it, it just has some vibration damping due to the material which helps the ride, but overall pretty sturdy (depends on the quality of carbon but generally sturdy)

      Carbon steel is the most common lf steel frames. As with everything if you take good care of it it'll last a long time. If you go dunk it in the ocean, yeah it'll rust pretty quick.

    • @YourFavoriteCyclist
      @YourFavoriteCyclist  4 роки тому +5

      I personally enjoy steel bikes. Big pros would be that they're strong, they absorb a lot of the trail vibrations while you ride and most of the time are less expensive than aluminum or carbon bikes. The only time I would shy away from one would be if you were going to be doing a lot of climbing or hike a biking, if it's not geared low enough you may notice the extra weight.
      All in all though I would definetly recommend a steel mtb for someone buying their first mtb!

      Noway. F steel. Imagine lifting 10 pounds more up a 50 ft climb. Its basic science, steel will wear you out. Aluminum costs more, faster and lighter, you will spend less energy on the same ride.

    Hello love from India
    I am going to buy my first mtb and I am confused between steel hardtail and alloy hardtail so please suggest me a good one and also confused between Firefox gangzta 29D vs Firefox cyclone 27.5D answer me sir which one I will buy

    • @YourFavoriteCyclist
      @YourFavoriteCyclist  4 роки тому +1

      Thanks for watching! So a steel hardtail is going to be similar to the gangzta 29D while a alloy (aluminum) hardtail is going to be like the cyclone 27.5D. I took a look at the 2 bikes on their webpage and overal it looks like the Cyclone 27.5D is the better bang for the buck.
      Its fairly common to see the difference between a 29er and a 27.5 be in the components and in this case it appears thw material of the frame as well, while still having close to the same price tag.
      In my opinion between those 2 bikes I would say the Cyclone 27.5D would be the more fun bike between the 2. Its going to be lighter and the smaller wheels make it much nimbler on the trails.
      Hope that helps!

      Carbon steel is your most common type of steel framed bicycle, nothing super special about it. It really just depends what you're looking for which frame would be better for you. If you're looking for lighter aluminum is the way to go, steel will give you a little more vibration dampening but be heavier.
