    9:55 - Hi, tech geek here. These were really popular among travelling salespeople, journalists and anyone else who travelled often and had a need to send periodic reports back to home base. Companies issued them because they were way cheaper than buying a computer for each worker. They worked well for the purpose as these people would generally be staying in a hotel overnight where they could hook in and send their data.

    That "Lassie" tape might have been recorded off of Nickelodeon; they did have the rights to that property starting in the early-mid 80's and ending all the way into the early-90's. Given the age of the tape you got, that was probably recorded in the last years that Nick had Lassie on that network. Very interested to see what is on those blanks, otherwise! Great haul, Benny-boy!

      It looks like someone recorded it in the early or mid 1990s, depending on the look of the tape. So it’s definitely an extremely strong chance that this could be recorded off of Nickelodeon. Lassie lasted on Nickelodeon from 1984 until 1996.

    That retaping tape is neat! We used to use four VHS machines as off-air loggers for the radio station - six hours per tape, four tapes per day, bigass drawers full of cassettes. They got a lot of use and eventually had a lot of dropouts. We weren't using fancy tapes like the one you found.

    • @djhrecordhound4391
      @djhrecordhound4391 3 роки тому

      LOL yes! Because logging rules stated we had to keep a month's worth, there was a rotating rack of T-180 VHS tapes for 3 machines. Whoever worked production that day had to change the tapes before leaving.
      Once I was asked to peel audio from a log tape. The PD thought I did a bad transfer until I played the VHS itself to him. By the next week they had bought all new tapes.

    Some observations:
    -In the cassette selection category, I'm surprised to find that you avoided getting out the Tony Bennett tape at 4:42. He recently achieved a milestone, releasing a new studio album ("Cheek to Cheek", one of his Lady Gaga duet albums) at the age of 95.
    -I had a copy of that _Shark Tale_ tape as a kid but I lost it. I am in the process of ordering a new copy, as it's a rare 2005 VHS.
    -9:09 Wow! They actually made a blank tape I can use over and over again with the same high quality picture and sound every time! I'm very impressed!
    -The Stan and Doug album can be heard (with 8-track-type sound quality) on UA-cam. Type in "Stan and Doug Yust Go Country and Western" in the search box.

    Not only was Ford pushing Quad 8 tracks in their high end luxury cars, but they continued to do so as late as 1980, long after anyone had stopped issuing quad 8 tracks, but only about 2-3 years before they stopped all 8 tracks. That Madison church VHS at Savers got me thinking... if you ever come across a tape called "The Flooding of Madison, SD. July 1993", make sure to pick it up. A Madison resident made a sort of homemade documentary about that town's flood back in 1993 with mid-90s consumer grade video editing tech. I'm not sure how the guy distributed the tapes or whether he sold them/gave them away, but it's a time capsule of South Dakota history and consumer video editing with analog equipment. I ended up with two copies over the years and I am planning on making it available on my UA-cam channel soon.

    Good haul! Idea for the quad tape: see how it plays in a regular 8-track deck. The quad channels might be spread over what are already the tracks/programs you can play on regular decks. It should/could take multiple passes to get all the tracks, but then you can sync them in post and remap it to today's surround sound!

    Russ and Becky Jeffers were mainstays at the old Opryland Theme Park in Nashville TN (it closed in 1998). They were really good Bluegrass/Country Musicians and singers. I saw them many times there when I was growing up. One of their schticks was to imitate famous singers and do versions of their best known songs with a punch line. I.E. sing Ring of Fire in Johnny Cash voice and say "People ask me how I wrote this song - well one day I got my preparation h mixed up with my ben-gay" They were super corny but super talented.

    I always speculate (and probably correctly) that so much of the same kind of albums (country, easy listening, gospel) wind up clogging the bins at thrift shops because someone is cleaning out a dead relative's house and have no idea what to do with the stuff. Somehow, some of it gains some kind of cachet among millennials who dig it ironically (about 10 years ago I think we were calling them hipsters -- sorry I'm out of things these days). But it also gives me a perverse sense of pride that someday, when some schmuck has to clean out my house after I'm dead, and they start chucking my music collection to the thrift ... what's that gonna be like when a future generation of thrift shop raiders starts picking through the tapes and CDs I left behind, and hopefully go, "well, this stuff isn't like the other crap ... it's *interesting* crap!" Hey, it's a thrift store staple. You'll always find religious albums, Andy Williams albums, kiddie albums, classical music albums, any kind of albums. That album you just passed was an Evie Christmas album called Ring Those Bells. Evie of course is a Christian artist. 🎶Come on ring those beeellls, light the Christmas tree..🎶 The record was released in the 70's.
