I feel as though I was born into the shadow work of others, as both my parents were mentally ill. I didn't have heat or a working stove in my home until I was 15 years old (and I lived in the PNW). Our water poured brown from the faucet. For years, we didn't even have a doorknob on our front door. Large fungus grew under my bed (which as a young child thought truly were monsters!) Violence, fear, and pain were all too common. But there were always glimmers of light, even in those darkest times. Those times tempered me into a mountain; strong and unmoveable. Now, I teach the younger folk who live much like I did how to not only survive, but how to find joy and grounding in their lives. The rich are like spoiled children; self-centered, naive, and out of touch with spirit. At times I pity them, because I have something they can never buy; the opportunity to explore and be who I am. Because I was outside of much of society's rules, I was not confined by them, and could experience the world in the raw, and do as I pleased. There's so much wisdom to be garnered from those experiences, and it's the wisdom I use now to create the incredible life I live. I apologize for the long rant; life in poverty is a subject very close to my heart, as are those who live it.
