One of funnest snowmobile rides to watch ever....love to see older sleds be ridden like they are supposed to be and push them to limits and see what they can do...love it!!! Keep them coming!
What a good time, this was us back in the 70’s , a lot if fixing, some good riding. On some weekends there were 40 machines at mom and dads farm along the Battle River in Saskatchewan.
Two things about the Elans.. #1 You don't sit down to piss and you don't sit down to ride an Elan. #2 You "burp" them through the bush...they can go many places that the newer bigger wider machines have no chance
Got a elan when i was 5, lived in sothern maine, awesome trail system. My parents didn't see much of me until spring. Rebuilding my 2nd sled a 77 lynx 250 single, cant wait to ride it again.
I know a guy that is now in his 70's that bought a pair of Elans in the early 70's that could run circles around you guys. He kept them running for a good 35 years and took em down trails you couldn't fathom. Great vid though, it at least gives a tiny insight to how incredibly capable these sleds were and how we could never get anything so cool now. Capable and cheap? No one wants to build that now.
If I had a piece of property to ride around on I would definitely buy and old elan to mess around on like this. Looks like fun without having to go 100 MPH all the time.
I hear ya. Sleds have been really heavy for a while now but they're starting to lighten them up, but probably can't get back to that light with the large motors of today.
Johnny Growing getting stuck and having to whip the sled around was expected for me, no groomed trails around, no big deal on my Polaris Electra or Yamaha SS440. I recently got a Yamaha Nitro stuck in wet snow up an incline, my bad. It felt like I should have a winch on the damn thing, lifting the back end turning it around was pretty grueling, and I'm no lady.
That was what kept me up everynight at the age of 9 in Ottawa.....Hearing Olympiques, Nordics, elans, etc running up the street.....strill great sleds.
That was my childhood, too. My dad had two Nordics. A 640 and a 399. Once I was big enough I got to go out on the 399 for late night rides with him and his friends. Burned the love of snowmobiling and 2 stroke fumes into my psyche.
We had a Elan club for many years. Ride some and did a lot of mechanics. I know everything about this. Its a whole lot more fun driving these sleds than riding a sled that almost never need care or have problems. And the best is: You don`t need much snow to have fun. I had a 15 hp (big block). A killing sled in deep snow and upwards driving. Cool video
Reminds of when I was 11 and hitting a friend's grandpa's farm here in MN with his '67 250cc Olympique. We'd go everywhere: it get stuck but we'd get it out in no time.
watching this video definitely will make you appreciative of our new sleds. I ride an old 05 rev which 11 years old w now but I started out an old artic cat kitty cat. all these sleds reminded me of it tearing up the neighborhood streets with that little snowmobile.
The one black one needs a tuneup lol. Best Mod for Elan is add ski's from a Olympique (they are 5 inches longer ) remove 2 leafs and they bolt right on at the right height, it keeps the front up in deep snow. I had one and I bolted in a 399cc Twin Rotax from a 72 Olympique. You need to transfer over the engine hoop. I used the chaincase and clutches from the Olimpique, it all bolts right up. The sled would do close to 70mph on hardpack and it rarely ever got stuck even in 10 feet of snow but the best thing was it was awesome on open water it was like a jetski even with 2 people on it with 24hp it would do open water like no other sled.
You need to get your hands on one of those new single cylinder Blast engines and put it into your Elan. Might be tricky trying to cool it but that would be one of the neater builds you could do.
LOL My sister used to call the elan "The Facefull" because it was so easy to tip and you would end up with a face full. I miss my elans. Had a single and a twin SS.
+My father purchased a new one for the winter of 1982.Had it over ten years. In the early 1990s he was riding with my brother(on a new 1990 Bravo LT) in the backcountry.About 11 miles in the journey the steering froze up on the elan.So he opened the bonnet and the fuel cell swelled up so much it stuck the steering rack.He released the fuel cap to a big SWOSH coming out of the fuel cap and the steering was back to normal..Fun sled(Just don,t take long trips).
lol the look on that guys face , he felt so proud to drive that truck . its strange how people get such a feeling of pride . the feeling of pride helps them to continue working like a slavee to get more wealth to feel even more proud lmao .
lol yup those old sleds were soooooooo much fun lol . spend most of the day digging yourself out after getting stuck or fixing break downs . not only that those sleds would beatt the snot out of a body , way to rough riding . only good thing about them was that they were light . no power , no traction .
Man, I love these little Elans. I like the challenge of small displacement and minimal travel. And I'm jealous of your snow. I have a Yamaha GP246F and an Enticer 250, but living in Los Angeles, I don't get a lot of opportunities to use 'em. Wish I had an Elan as well....so cool.
Absolutely love this video, I've watched every video of yours Louie and this was absolutely hilarious, I have got to buy an old Elan after watching this one and your video with no skis on it! Love it
Garyntara7788 Burbank the ride is fun with more people when I was 11 and was 150lbs long ago I rode a polaris 240 StarLite for 300 miles in deep snow powder field for two days good times with 1000 acres
+Vincent Sluga when I was 11 I had a 1981 artic cat jag 440 I started riding snowmobiles when I was 4 almost 5 my dad started me on a 1980 Kawasaki drifter 440 and he even let me ride his big red rupp 600 long track mountain rescue snowmobile and he made a trailer so my little sister could go riding with us and so I could pull the neighbor kids around the field across from our house and my older sister had a skidoo 440 now I am looking into getting a 1974 skidoo TNT 440 for me and my wife a skidoo mxz 440 I am also a fan of skidoo after my boss let me use his 1997 skidoo mxz 670 it's very fast and brought back memories of when I had my artic cat jag 440 because it was a fast sled I had to show everyone up with it because they under estimated it until I beat them on the trails
our very first sled was a yamaha 338gpx.What a good old girl she was.My brother knocked his front teeth out jumping the pond lol I only have 8 sled's now.But my one sled is a 1977 massey ferguson chinook with a 340 cauna motor. She is light as a feather. But the old girl has been sitting for a while.Loved this sled I used to go out with my buddies on there new sled's.I'd show up and theyed shake there head omg your not riding that old piece of shit are you.I'd laugh and say what ever,I'll catch up eventually lolI had more fun on that old girl she was so much fun.I want to fix it up but have so many other project's to build first. We just finally got enough to go for a rip here in southern ontario.I live 25 min's west of London.Wish the Massey was going cause she is a boogie wheel's.Cheer's Bud another great vid
Have 1989 skidoo Mach 1 looking to put a lighter aluminum skid in if possible what would fit? #it ain't snowmobiling if ur coat doesn't smell like gas!
How did you build the monster elan and what sled was it original or what was chassis built as if so what are dimension sorry for all the question just I'm going to build one
One of funnest snowmobile rides to watch ever....love to see older sleds be ridden like they are supposed to be and push them to limits and see what they can do...love it!!! Keep them coming!
Yes a days ride maybe 30 miles and it was all ditch riding no groomed trails u made your own and going back to work soar I miss it
Oh man, this brings back memories. Good times
What a good time, this was us back in the 70’s , a lot if fixing, some good riding. On some weekends there were 40 machines at mom and dads farm along the Battle River in Saskatchewan.
just hearing those old sleds brings back so many memories of my old olympic 335 awesome video Louie
Two things about the Elans.. #1 You don't sit down to piss and you don't sit down to ride an Elan. #2 You "burp" them through the bush...they can go many places that the newer bigger wider machines have no chance
I like the saying about élan steering "the only time you're on the trail with one is when you cross it"!!
Got a elan when i was 5, lived in sothern maine, awesome trail system. My parents didn't see much of me until spring. Rebuilding my 2nd sled a 77 lynx 250 single, cant wait to ride it again.

brings back the good old days, wish you could see more of these on the trail, I'm looking for an old raider myself
I had a 1971 Elan as a kid. Lots of fun times on it.
If I had a piece of property to ride around on I would definitely buy and old elan to mess around on like this. Looks like fun without having to go 100 MPH all the time.
Agreed, far more fun on these than blasting around that area on a modern sled.
I hear ya. Sleds have been really heavy for a while now but they're starting to lighten them up, but probably can't get back to that light with the large motors of today.
+paisteboy 8
dont buy an elan, buy something front enigined like a cheetah or a gemini
Johnny Growing getting stuck and having to whip the sled around was expected for me, no groomed trails around, no big deal on my Polaris Electra or Yamaha SS440. I grew up riding an Elan. That little thing would go anywhere. XD
Reminds of when I was 11 and hitting a friend's grandpa's farm here in MN with his '67 250cc Olympique. We'd go everywhere: it get stuck but we'd get it out in no time.
This is probably my most favourite video by you guys. I had a 72 Arctic cat 440 on the farm. Old kohler motor had some balls.
What a great day you were having! My '72 Elan is a Frankenstein... different parts all over, but still unstoppable.
what a riot, brings back ol memories. I had an ol 12 i guess 35 years ago. put alot of miles on her
watching this video definitely will make you appreciative of our new sleds. I ride an old 05 rev which 11 years old w

You guy crack me up with all your sled antics and goofing around! Love it! Lots of fans out there Louie watchin. Keep the vids coming!

OMG, this is EXACTLY the kind of sledding I did 35 years ago... messing around in the bush and frozen ponds on ancient bogie machines with my buddies
Miss my old Elan something fierce... You guys first firing them up brought back lots of memories! I gotta find me another one! :)
Isn't it awesome when you can pick up the back of a sled with one hand and throttle with the other. Love these old 1/2 pint sleds.
Perfect. No helmets. Thant's the way it should be. Keep up the great work.
LOL My sister used to call the elan "The Facefull" because it was so easy to tip and you would end up with a face full. I miss my elans. Had a single and a twin SS.
I just wanted to say I love watching your videos.been watching them as much as I can.
elans go where no other machine can go thats for sure
besides maybe newer more capable sleds
Just a Quick question what year is the one with the big light
91

+Jack Frost hey thats a great story! Thanks for watching.
brings back some old memories
Love those old Elan's!
those old points sleds sure gave a guy a total workout man hahaha
an elan is the funniest snowmobile i have ever seen.
brings back memories as a kid, had a 69 olympique with a racing 335cc, thought is was fast. till i put a mid 70's 338 yamaha twin on it.
lol the look on that guys face , he felt so proud to drive that truck . its strange how people get such a feeling of pride . the feeling of pride helps them to continue working like a slavee to get more wealth to feel even more proud lmao .

Hey Louis you should draw a quick map of your property so we have an idea as to where you are when riding.
Nice truck,
Can you do a few minutes of an episode on what he put into that? Sounds sick!!!!
Cool vid! I just got my 86 phazer running after 4 years!
The Elan is likely the single best sled ever built. I'd own one in a minute if I could find one.
Wow cool sleds.little before my time but i like these
Awesome videos! You should get a 75 MERC 440 Sno-Twister and put independant front suspension on it.
you need the snowmobile song with the older sleds
Man, I love these little Elans. I like the challenge of small displacement and minimal travel. And I'm jealous of your snow. I have a Yamaha GP246F and an Enticer 250, but living in Los Angeles, I don't get a lot of opportunities to use 'em. Wish I had an Elan as well....so cool.
Kealey hitching a ride on the back of the elan getting dragged around. Lol.
ahhh takes me back to my first sled the ol Nordic wish it had those powder skis eh good times boys
This was the cool/goofy shit that made this channel great (and unique mod sleds)
Last 6 uploads have been glorified commericals, it's a shame.
That's what I like about elans if they fall apart you can pretty well put it back together on the trail or in the woods
Absolutely love this video, I've watched every video of yours Louie and this was absolutely hilarious, I have got to buy an old Elan after watching this one and your video with no skis on it! Love it
Makes me miss my youth:( I couldn't kill my old Elan no matter how hard I tried.
looks like fun :) I miss the simple sleds. hard to find a decent one.
This is too COOL!!!
Great Canadian pastime!!!!
the old skidoo Elan's are good starter sleds for kids
Reminds me of my childhood !
Good times. BTDT keeping my 800 thank you.!

The nature looks exactly like here in Sweden :)

The old ones are more fun, and practical.

Have 1989 skidoo Mach 1 looking to put a lighter aluminum skid in if possible what would fit? #it ain't snowmobiling if ur coat doesn't smell like gas!

What year would that full yellow skidoo be
I had a couple of these when I was a kid. they were both twins.
These are all singles, right?
My fist sled was an old snow cruiser.
