I took a picture with my iPhone and compared the look to the sprayed dried picture and the only difference I could really see is the darkening of the gray. It virtually is the same color everywhere else. This product sounds great and can’t wait to see the video the company put out. I can see this being a BIG game changer for pastel painters. Thank you for what you do Jason, you are always working tirelessly to give so much of yourself to others.
I am honestly genuinely impressed with this from what you've shown! The darkening is only slight and as you have shown you can go straight back in over the top if you need to brighten up the highlights again. Honestly something like this would give me piece of mind when sending my artwork to buyers so they don't accidently smudge areas when unpacking their artwork. I think I'm definitely going to give it a go!
Thanks Jason. Very interesting. Greatart have published the prices. It's more expensive than Spectrafix, but I think it's worth having a go. It could potentially solve a lot of issues with not only pastel pencil work, but also coloured pencil and graphite.

Thanks for this. It would have been good to see the same trials you did with the other fixatives using this one, a band coloured with pastels and spray on half of it and see how the colour changes.
Thanks! I’m beginning to really get into pastel painting. I certainly need to work on my artistic & drawing skills continually, (no matter what media I’m using) but I also need to learn the more “mechanical” or technical aspects of working in pastels. With pastels, the technical methods that are helpful are not necessarily intuitive and so we have to experiment ourselves or tap into other more experienced pastel artists’ knowledge base. I’ve been using Dick Blick general purpose fixative for pastels and other dry media. It works very well. I’m learning to fix each layer I’m satisfied with so I can work on top as I need. This works ok for now. I’m sure I’ll learn some other tips and fixative products that may work better, here & there. Blick’s fixative spray works well and there’s virtually no smudging with 2 layers of spray applied. The down side are the fumes and I have to take my art outside to safely spray. I want to try the safer Spectrum and maybe the Revolution spray you’re showing here if it’s available in the US. I haven’t seen it advertised here. I’ll take a look. Thanks!
Thanks for this demo, yours are always so helpful. If you rewind the video to before the spray and then after, you do see colour changes. The whites turn gray and it darkens everything generally.
I noticed significant darkening and loss of brightness and contrast in Clairfontaine’s own video promoting the spray. Def worth a try experimenting on my own but no high hopes. I generally don’t fix the last layers of brights and darks anyways...
Excellent will give this a try, I am a beginner with landscape and figure that if it does darken a area, I would probably just go over that area with a little more pastel.
Thank you I spent hours on a pastel painting spray it and lost the colour so disappointed it went to dark All the best for next year blessing stay well to you and the family
I am not a working professional artist, I dabble in all kinds of mediums, When I was younger I use to use aerosol hair spray such as White Rain dry hairspray as a fixative for pastel chalk drawings and believe it or not it held up all these years. (20+) Yes it will smudge if you rub it but not if it is just lightly touched. It also has not yellowed or faded. I think a Dry fixative is the answer for pastel's and there is nothing really going to stop it from transfer short of a harsh coating of something.
The color change to the underpainting seems major and seems to make black. Yes, using alcohol (very good 90%, though hard to get today), turpentine ( not so great changes the nature of pastel, but does work), water or just spray the back of the substrate. This new REVOLUTION product reminds one of Blue Label Fixtiv by Weber which was a great (fluid fix) but unfortunately now out of business. It was a product so great to use for underpainting and for using many layers. Happy to know that there is something has taken that place other than Spectra fix. Pastel-mat seems to work well. Thank you!
In my case I use fixative a lot, that piece that spray on the top of sprayer sometimes as malfunction, don`t spray very well. I buy a bocal spray and noted that works a little better, spread the fixative in the direction of the work, better results. We must be very careful when we used that Bocal Spray, when we blow have attention when we do that, maybe can helps .
Thank you very much Jason great demo! I know that you are using pastelmat but I can't find any information how will react paper like pastelcard (sennelier) that is very sensitive to any liquid... it will be very very helpful if you can try and tell us :) thanks again!
Pastelcard is not compatible with any type of liquid so it won’t work with this either. You can test it out but it will still cause the vegetable flakes to flake off the base as it will react the same with every other liquid it comes in contact with.
I noticed the whites don’t disappear on your flamingo picture, that’s really good. This is a great video to show us in detail what this does. Thank so much Jason.
Y'know if I can find a place to buy this fixative I would quite possibly pick up pastels again. I stopped when I noticed how much damage the pieces were taking going to and from shows. Thank you Jason!
As one of Jasons Patreons I trusst his opinion, you couldnt get a better recommendation. I am definitely going to try this after seeing his results. I am hoping to use it to fix a panpastel underpainting to then use colour pencils rather than pastel pencils. Also to darken anthracite pastelmat.
@@wildlifeartjm thanks a zillion for all your teaching but now I'm moving on to watercolour painting....I don't know whether I'll continue pastels...thank you 🙏🙏🙏🙏
Okay, I think this is something I can use. Still don’t like the colour change but the fixative properties would make it work for me. That is, until someone produces the perfect spray
From what I can see it tends to alter the colors somewhat. On the downside you might lose the exact color you struggled to achieve but the positive is that there is more contrast with the richer tones.
Thanks so much Jason for this amazing review. This seems like a great product. Does this spray evenly or would it be better to transfer it to a fine mist sprayer?

So how do you view this in comparison with the Spectrifix final fixative because I have had nothing come off using the both final and fixative in tandem. And I have quickly varnished over it in multimedia over watercolor to have a classless painting. Just curious as to your thoughts in comparison. Thank you Jason.
