Thank you so much! Lol- I have an area rug I’m in love with and a runner that is NEEDED but cannot find anything to match or coordinate! Imma try this!
GOOD JOB! I have a rug that I am trying to salvage and I am going to try this. Agreed on the rug pad! I just installed new wood flooring and I wouldn't like to die it by mistake!
Well done. I really like the new colors! I have a brand new 100% New Zealand wool rug in white. But I know it won’t last ( my partner has a chronic soda spill problem, and we have a dog ) so I intend on dyeing our new rug soon. This has been a great help...thank you!
Thank you ! I just did my hallway rug grey turned out great! I watched another lady that said she didn’t wanna dye hers because it was way too expensive for the dye and you had to boil the water and all that stuff And she said it seemed like expensive and too much of a pain. Oh my gosh I did not have to boil water or anything. I did exactly what you did and it turned out perfect. In the end she ended up spending $80 I spent 5$ on one bottle of dye! Actually my mom bought the dye! Lol thanks!!
Love this. I have an old rug in our my husband's shop for my sounds game room and this would be great to hide all the yuck. But my question is when you walk barefoot on it after a while did you get blue feet?
Patricia Panagides thank you!! It is 100% Viscose (Rayon)! It will definitely work in both natural and man made fibers, the color saturation will just vary. Hope you try it out soon! 😊
Just a side comment, If dying poly rugs with rit you will want to use their rit for synthetics. Using regular rit on a man made fiber will eventually bleed or wash out. I work with rugs for a living just to qualify my comment.
@@TheKonnoisseur11 exactly!! Yep! And you don’t even necessarily have to use three! I just wanted three different colors. I only used partial bottles of each but it would depend on how large the rug was!
Hi there! I would not recommend getting the rug wet and I would definitely put a rug pad down underneath to avoid direct contact with your floors just in case! So far though, I have had no issues with dye transferring and I walk on it every day. I do, however, have a rug pad underneath! Hope that helps! :)
Thank Alline! Haha great question!! I was actually a little worried about how our grass would react but it was completely fine!! Like nothing ever happened! 😅
@@MessinwithMeggie Hi Melissa, I dyed 2 rugs. First and all wool with tied wool tufts. I ruined it but I did learn. I tried another all wool with tied tufts that was mostly lighter blues. It had stains I couldn't get out. I didn't get it as saturated. It turned out great. I was handicapped with unusually wet weather. I would do it again with some changes. Thanks
I'm curious about how the dye is performing a year out. Im thinking of trying this on a rug myself. 🤔 Is the dye fast? Could you walk on it with white socks and not turn them blue? Did the dye transfer to the padding beneath? 😊
Hi there! I’m so sorry I’m just seeing your comment! It took me a few days to complete just due to drying times but yes it is actually pretty fast! And yes I am able to walk on it without turning my socks or feet blue but I rinsed and vacuumed it very thoroughly! The dye has not transferred to the pad but I would definitely recommend using one in case of spills causing dye transfer. I hope you try it out! 😊
No! Do not! Rit needs heat to set it, and will still be unstable, like it needs to be boiled in a pot for a good hour. Still will run. That’s on natural fibers which it’s made for. Take it out on grass (maybe shampoo it) and spray it with watered down acrylic paint. Be very careful of overspray and wind. Rit doesn’t bind to polyester, which is plastic. Acrylic paint will. This looks like a short pile olefin rug and no dyes will bind to that. It looks great! But I went to art school, we had to do chemistry of these things. You don’t want dye coming off in the house.
Hi! All of the above is actually true (I am a clothing designer) but it has actually worked out on this rug! There was definitely some dye transfer at first but after vacuuming well a few times, the dye has actually set well and doesn’t transfer at all. I’ve had it for about 3 years now, and with a rug pad underneath, I have had no issues! I use it in my office and walk on it all day everyday and never have any dye transfer. Definitely a good warning though, so thank you for sharing! 😊
I bet your forearms were very sore from pumping that spray bottle! LOL. I have a shag I love that is peacock blue but has some silvery threads in it and I cant find a peacock blue shag any where that matches my freshly painted walls or think and plush like the one I have! What do you think the chances are of finding a peacock blue and if it would even work on shag! What about mixing colors? Do you think that would work! I have ordered 3 more rugs and none are as plush as the one I first bought! Yours looks great btw and where did you get the spray bottles?
Haha yes my forearms did hurt!! I would think that mixing colors would work just fine! I’ve never tried this on a shag rug but imagine it would work as well. You would probably have to comb some of the dye through, but should still work! I got my spray bottles at Walmart! Let me know how it turns out! 😊

Tiffany Damle hi! It did until I rinsed it and vacuumed it several times! I did a test after it dried each time by rubbing my hand on it to see if the dye would transfer. The last time I rubbed a paper towel over it with no transfer and called it a day! Be sure to put a rug pad underneath to protect your floor in case of spills. The dye could still transfer if the rug gets wet! 😊
Hi Bella! I have a rug pad underneath to prevent this from happening, so I'm not sure. I would definitely suggest putting some kind of barrier between the rug and your floor just in case! :)
I saw another video where they said to use hot water, but it looks like you didn't, and it turned out great. Could you please confirm the temperature of the water you mixed with the dye?

Here's my concern with trying this. I have a large over-dyed carpet in my kitchen. As a high-traffic area, we keep it clean with a home carpet "steamer." The problem is, we've found that every time we use the carpet machine, it removes a little bit of the dye. And so after about 3 years, while the carpet is in great condition, it has faded considerable. So, with your technique, I'm guessing dying it would create the same issue when running a steam machine on it? I'm wonder if it might work if one locks in the color with Scotchguard or such?
Hi Philip! Great question! I would imagine that using a steam cleaner on it would continue to remove the dye over time. I would say trying scotch guard would be a great idea since it doesn’t affect the look or feel of what you apply it to! It couldn’t hurt to try! Let me know how it works out for you! 😊
If you soak the rug with a soda ash solution you won’t have that problem. People don’t use soda ash for tie dye and that’s why colors fade considerably
