Everyone seems to be asking what he does with all the money he earns, which is a good question. I'd like to think he throws the coins in the river wishing for a new job or revenge on Heracles, you choose.

I read a modern fanfic about Persephone joining the Underworld, and in it, she asks what he does with the coins. When he was done for the day, he poured them onto the ground where they were absorbed like water. After he said they, along with the gems, wooden beads, etc, were being returned to the Underworld, she realized that they were seeds, laying the foundation for new veins, etc. That reason's my favorite and it's basically turned into my headcanon.

In Charons interaction with Heracles, I always viewed it as part of building up Heracles, that he could do things other demigods and even gods could not. Only the smartest or strongest could influence the crossing of the river. The exception, by nature had to be...exceptional. (And old Herc, he weren't the smartest)

Just on the " only ferryman of the dead I know of" there are many, or just many versions of one depending on how you see it.
The Greek and later Roman Charon one was based on the Egyptian Kherty.
Which was based on the sumarian ferryman Ushanabi.
Buddhist and Hindu tradition in India and japan also describes a river of the dead seperating the mortal from the underworld.
Gnöll is the Norse version of the river but instead of a ferryman there is a bridge with a guard/guide.
Weirdly, all of these versions describe a river seperating the world of the living from the dead.

Not sure if anyone has mentioned him yet, but Mesopotamian mythology had a ferryman of their own quite similar to Charon. The name was Urshanabi. He was the ferryman of the Hubur, or river of the dead.

He makes an appearance in a french fantasy series ferrying the main character in the second book. He eventually tells the MC that he doesn't like leaving the souls there if they can't pay. The MC tells him he'll him "three times nothing" for the passage of all the souls at the next point(Chiron answers him he'll leave him there if he can't pay). The MC tells him to put his book down, then pick it up, ask him what was under "nothing", then to pick it up and repeat three times. I had imagine a smile for the cleverness of the character on Chiron's face.

  • @cjmarshall0221

Hello there. Very good video, with lots of solid explanations.
I'd like to add a few facts, if you don't mind.
According to some beliefs, those who did not receive a coin after death - usually placed in the mouth under the tongue, and sometimes two coins were placed on each eye - could enter Hades, but only through the pauper's entrance. Considering the fact that - according to the Greeks - everyone was equal after they were dead, it didn't make much sense for a pauper's entrance to exist, but I guess no one thought about it much.
There was a story about Sisyphus, a king in ancient Greece, who angered Hades and ordered Hermes to bring him to the underworld. Sisyphus, knowing about the situation, ordered his wife not to give him a proper burial and to put no coin in his mouth. When he arrived, entering the underworld a pauper, Hades was so aghast he allowed Sisyphus to return to earth to teach his wife respect.
Back to Charon - concerning what he did with the coins, this was a question which was never answered. My thought on the subject is that he either threw them away, or they just disappeared. The reason for the tribute was not because Charon needed the money, it was rather a way for the mortal spirits to pay respect to him for the service he was performing.
Yeah, I know, the reasoning is not to strong for that one, but it's the best I can do under the circumstances.

I always knew of Charon as the ferryman with an emphasis on the (CHE) pronunciation.
He has also been portrayed in every fictional story of Greek Mythology in modern fiction that I can remember.
Disney's Hercules, Percy Jackson and the Olympians: The Lightning Thief, Class of the Titans and so on.
This makes Charon one of the core figures in Greek Pop-Culture even if his significance was underutilized or only used in one scene over the course of the story being told at the time.
Glad to see you back. Can you do one on the Thunderbird or any other Native American folklore?

Charon has always been such a mystery to me. Your unveiling of his origins was superb! I cannot get past the visuals of Hercules beating with his oar🤣🤣🤣May I ask you the reference for that? I very much enjoy your presentations. Kind regards D.

Picked up your hardcover Greek mythology. Haven't delved into it yet but would love it if you did a book on Norse mythology as well

As I have been noticing, through different mythologies there is always the one character whom is affiliated on both sides. And this one is strongly needed. JR🤔

Great video today! I can’t wait to buy your book, if it’s as good as these vids.
I have always been interested in Charon. Most of my life I only knew him as the river man in Disney’s Hercules. Then when I got into the Percy Jackson Books (not the Percy Jackson movies, they suck and are sometimes horribly inaccurate to Mythology) I learned his name, Charon and I learned how, for a price, he would ferry people across the River Styx.
The Percy Jackson obsession got me into mythology in general and I started watching mythology videos. Not gonna lie most of them were boring but your videos were fun so I ended up just watching your vids and one other mythology UA-cam channel called Overly Sarcastic Productions.
Anyways thanks for making this video!

On the topic of Greek Mythology. Odysseus and Ulysses are often the same person but are there any differences in the way they are portrayed?

First I heard of him was Chris de Burgh's 'Don't Pay the Ferryman'. The song paints the picture of a Charon-like figure, but warns not to pay him until he completes the journey, even if he asks you to. Figured that if you didn't pay him, he'd never deliver you across. Any coronation of this story to the Greek myth?

I always preferred pronouncing it Kay-Ron, not only to distinguish from Chiron (k-eye-ron) but also because my little sister's name is Karyn.
I'm a big Greek Mythology buff, have been for over 20 yrs, so Greek mythology names & terms come up in conversations way more than you'd think; and if I hear Charon pronounced like Karen, I think of my sister rather than the ferryman.

I was told by a Greek friend, it would be pronounce like "Kyrin" (k-eye-rin).
The "k" sound with the "h" means it would either be a "sh" or "k" sound (with the "h" being the silent letter)
And the "ai" sound would be like "eye" sound, similar to how it is in Daimon
