Everyone seems to be asking what he does with all the money he earns, which is a good question. I'd like to think he throws the coins in the river wishing for a new job or revenge on Heracles, you choose.
I read a modern fanfic about Persephone joining the Underworld, and in it, she asks what he does with the coins. When he was done for the day, he poured them onto the ground where they were absorbed like water. After he said they, along with the gems, wooden beads, etc, were being returned to the Underworld, she realized that they were seeds, laying the foundation for new veins, etc. That reason's my favorite and it's basically turned into my headcanon.
In Charons interaction with Heracles, I always viewed it as part of building up Heracles, that he could do things other demigods and even gods could not. Only the smartest or strongest could influence the crossing of the river. The exception, by nature had to be...exceptional. (And old Herc, he weren't the smartest)
In the original Clash of the Titans, I think they just referred to him as The Ferryman. He's always been a special entity to me. Worthy of great respect.
It's actually interesting that some Irish still do this. I'd always heard the version of 2 coins placed upon the eyes, where in this story 1 coin in the mouth. I just asked my kids to slip me a coin in my hand at my funeral just in case make it 2, I might look silly with coins on my eyes, lol. Why am I fearing death so much silly.
Epic charon_gaming yepper that too! As well covering all the mirrors and not letting water set to warm. Traditional activities often go by the clan or family.
Just on the " only ferryman of the dead I know of" there are many, or just many versions of one depending on how you see it. The Greek and later Roman Charon one was based on the Egyptian Kherty. Which was based on the sumarian ferryman Ushanabi. Buddhist and Hindu tradition in India and japan also describes a river of the dead seperating the mortal from the underworld. Gnöll is the Norse version of the river but instead of a ferryman there is a bridge with a guard/guide. Weirdly, all of these versions describe a river seperating the world of the living from the dead.
I was surprised that, after you mentioned Virgil and Dante describing Charon similarly, that you didn't mention that Virgil is introduced as a character in Dante's Inferno, as Dante's own guide through the after life realm.
Not sure if anyone has mentioned him yet, but Mesopotamian mythology had a ferryman of their own quite similar to Charon. The name was Urshanabi. He was the ferryman of the Hubur, or river of the dead.
He makes an appearance in a french fantasy series ferrying the main character in the second book. He eventually tells the MC that he doesn't like leaving the souls there if they can't pay. The MC tells him he'll him "three times nothing" for the passage of all the souls at the next point(Chiron answers him he'll leave him there if he can't pay). The MC tells him to put his book down, then pick it up, ask him what was under "nothing", then to pick it up and repeat three times. I had imagine a smile for the cleverness of the character on Chiron's face.
Its quite ironic especially now you see that quote “Death isn’t free” as a reminder of reality. Greek Mythology says one coin was the price in the afterlife, but now when you think about it the cost of funeral expenses etc. So the saying is true.
Hello there. Very good video, with lots of solid explanations. I'd like to add a few facts, if you don't mind. According to some beliefs, those who did not receive a coin after death - usually placed in the mouth under the tongue, and sometimes two coins were placed on each eye - could enter Hades, but only through the pauper's entrance. Considering the fact that - according to the Greeks - everyone was equal after they were dead, it didn't make much sense for a pauper's entrance to exist, but I guess no one thought about it much. There was a story about Sisyphus, a king in ancient Greece, who angered Hades and ordered Hermes to bring him to the underworld. Sisyphus, knowing about the situation, ordered his wife not to give him a proper burial and to put no coin in his mouth. When he arrived, entering the underworld a pauper, Hades was so aghast he allowed Sisyphus to return to earth to teach his wife respect. Back to Charon - concerning what he did with the coins, this was a question which was never answered. My thought on the subject is that he either threw them away, or they just disappeared. The reason for the tribute was not because Charon needed the money, it was rather a way for the mortal spirits to pay respect to him for the service he was performing. Yeah, I know, the reasoning is not to strong for that one, but it's the best I can do under the circumstances.
I love this channel, he teaches me much things I know now of Greek Mythology, he is the best, I recommended to all of my friends, keep doing good man, your the best.
