  • UPDATE: Inspired by YOU (the audience) and your response to this video, I've created a new UA-cam series: Confessions of a Marine Biologist: / sciallorg
    Remember how everyone wanted to be a marine biologist at some point while growing up? Well, this video pays tribute to the wonderful and REAL world of marine biology. (Also, please keep in mind, we are actually working in these clips!)
    Please share this video, especially with people who may consider marine science as a career! Hopefully, this makes their decision a little easier, and we are always recruiting :)
    This video would not have been possible were it not for the amazing people (many of whom are featured here) that make working as a field researcher on the island of Moorea, French Polynesia so special an experience.
    Featured researchers are studying various aspects of coral reef community ecology, and they are based out of the University of Florida, California State University-Northridge, the University of California-Santa Barbara, and Victoria University of Wellington.
    For more information, please visit: sciall.org
    Please take a moment and answer a short questionnaire after watching (I will use your answers to help me apply for funding to make new, even better videos--thanks in advance!!): www.surveymonke...

    This is what I want, by that I mean as in...it is my dream, I may be 12 but I am extremely passionate for marine life, from algae to coral, oarfish to eel, I don't mind, I just love it. My mother is a biologist and my father is a physicist, they really help me. I have snorkeled in the Red Sea and have seen amazing creatures, while I was there I went out on glass bottom boats and was studying the habitats and nature of the creatures using books and guides. It was truly amazing. I have studied and studied, I love Maths, Geography, Physics, Biology, Chemistry, I just love it all. I will keep trying to work hard for my dream, I really will. I have fish tanks in my bedroom, I have fish and algae eaters, Sometimes I like to have aquatic snails and frogs etc, but don't worry, I keep them in a good condition, I provide them with food and entertainments, I have everything I need for them. I know this is a long comment, but I just love this video, I really do, and I must thank you for making this

    like many of these comments say, this is really what I want to do. I got my scuba license when I was 10, I've been competitively swimming for almost 6 years now, and it seems like everything I do is associated with water and the ocean in some way (it's even become an inside joke with my friend group lol). this just is my dream, and I just don't want to be cooped up in an office for the rest of my life, even if it means getting a lower pay

    Mike. I am 23 years old, a veteran of the United States Air Force. I lived in Mexico at a very young age in a little cove called Yallapa, it was a 30 minute BOAT RIDE only from Puerto Vallarta to get there. There was little to no electricity, and no way in or out except by boat. It was tucked inside huge mountains and right on the pacific ocean, and there was a freshwater stream that ran down the north side of it into the ocean. TBC

    I know this video was posted a while ago I still wanted to share my story...
    I don't know where this came from but ever since I remember i would always feel more myself around the ocean it was like I needed it, it was just so interesting for me, maybe I got it from when I was 5 we went on a cruise and saw orca whales jumping out of the ocean, I haven't been to camps or anything like that, but my family loovveeesss to travel and when I mean love I mean love I've been to Mexico once and went scuba diving it was incredible. And I am very exited for the upcoming trips we are going on, they all involve the ocean, first we are going to the coast of Florida on a four day weekend that will be fun and then we are going to mexico again and staying on a beach house i am Soo exited and then got spring break we are going on an 18 hour flight to Australia near the coast where we used to live I can't wait to find the connection between me and the ocean again and I can't wait to get opportunities to learn more about the wonders of the ocean

    It's been years but I just wanna let you guys know that this is motivational video! I found this years ago looking for a sign to pursue a degree in marine biology and ever since then I watch this video when I need a burst of energy, a pick me up, or just to remember why I do what I do. I completed my B.S in Marine Bio almost a year ago, I am now going for my master's degree in Animal Science and still watch this video weekly. I just wanted to take the time to say thanks.

    That's it. I'm sold! I thought I had to get an I.T career to be happy. I like programming, get excited about the latest phones, laptops and components that power them. I use Linux, flash ROMs on my phone, write code, I spent a lot of time reading tech news articles, reading programming tutorials, etc but the more I do those things the more I realize I won't be happy in that career field. I dread the idea of doing work that requires me to sit for too long or jobs that don't require me to be physically active. I want to keep tech as a hobby and as a secondary interest and that way I think my passion for it will remain. The moment I make it something I have to do to survive I'll lose my passion for it. With Marine biology that isn't the case. There was a time when I wanted to be a marine biologist but I discarded the idea because I thought that it wouldn't make me a millionaire or famous like Mark Zuckerburg. But the moment I let go of those desires for money and fame I find that I just want to be happy doing my job, be close to nature and not be behind a desk most times. I know it's not all fun and happy times(no job is) but I think this line of work is what I would consider my dream job.

    Every morning around 6:00 AM there were 7 dolphins that would come and eat the shrimp, and were also quite friendly. They would play with the kids until about 8 AM and then be on their way. All the wildlife I encountered there inspired me to look into Marine Biology. I wanted to understand that wildlife. I wanted to interact with it, and to do what I could to help conservation efforts. I really enjoyed this video of yours, and hope you make many more like this giving insight into Marine Biology.

    Mike - I love that this video has become a venue for people outside of academia and even the marine biology community to ask you questions! WELL DONE!
    I know at SDSU Marine Bio program has a Q&A email address that anyone can ask questions - where graduate students take turns in responding to public questions from basic questions about seastars to complex academic concerns.
    You should consider a similar strategy like a "Ask Amy/Jeeves" forum for grad students to help assist educating others.

    I used to wanna be a marine biologist in middle school/HS too. I got straight As all the way until sophomore year. Then i got a C in chemistry, snapped, and started playing wow. I played WoW for 8 years and my GPA went from 4.2 to 2.0 in 2 years. Then i skipped college and started drinking and doing drugs to supplement wow even though middle school me hated all drug/alcohol users. I end up just like my dad because of one bad choice to play WoW. Dont play wow kids. Oh and now i'm going back to school for marine biology too! But it's gonna take 20 years because schools so expensive.

    Your point about gaining experience early on is an important one.
    Best advice for young people interested in this career path: Read a lot (and broadly) about your interests, and get involved (take classes, volunteer in labs, and spend time in the field, even if it's just for fun!). Honing your interests early on is an invaluable step toward a happy, fulfilling career, but it requires you to be dedicated and, most importantly, honest with yourself every step of the way.

    I've always been thinking of marine biology as a career since I was 6 years old and went to SeaWorld. When I was in 5th grade I ask for Jacques Cousteau's documentary series. Im in highschool now and the other day my teacher and class all told me that marine biology sucks cause i would never get a job or make any money and it kinda bummed me out. It must of been fate that I found this video. I just want you guys to know that you have reinspired me. Thanks

    Good point, Lucas. Field work (featured in this video) can be a small portion of what scientists do, but it really depends. Some scientists choose to be field technicians for their careers and spend tons of time in the field, while others have field seasons in which they collect data for the year. My field seasons have been 3-4 months a year over the past 4 years, but it is highly variable.

    Hi Elisha,
    I would give it time. Read a lot about marine biology, watch nature documentaries, talk to teachers and certainly visit the ocean! Sometimes inspiration and drive is all we need to succeed at things that we may be bad at at first. But there are many ways to have an ocean-related career: conservation, teaching, and outreach to name a few. Best of luck to you!

    This will vary tremendously among graduate students programs, but I spend 4 months out of the year living and working at my field site (Moorea, French Polynesia). I spend the other 8 months analyzing data, writing up and presenting my results (including conference presentations), submitting proposals to fund new research, teaching in the classroom and in the field, and taking classes. Ask what draws you to marine biology--the field? the science? conservation? This will help guide your next step.

  • @MikeGilOfficial
    @MikeGilOfficial  11 років тому

    Hi Eric. Your question is a good one, but of course it will vary from person to person. I think a top pro is that I get to come up with questions that no one in the history of mankind have asked, and then I get to try to answer them in an amazing ecosystem. A con would be that there is a lot to juggle if you stay in academia, and you are forced to either become very efficient with your time, or look for alternative career paths (for example, government orgs or NGOs).

  • @MikeGilOfficial
    @MikeGilOfficial  11 років тому

    Hi Jester. Good question. I think balance is necessary for people to be happy in any career, including marine biology. Yes, this career can take you far away places for long stretches, but the beauty of this job, and many others in science, is that if you work hard you can have a very flexible schedule where you decide if, when, and for how long you travel. Plus some scientists bring their families into the field, which can make for some great life experiences for all. :)

    Everyone who is younger listen up! I understand that the allure of working in the ocean and seeing fish is fun, but what they did in this video is a VERY small portion of what the field is all about. Working with animals is fun, scuba diving is fun, being in water is fun, research papers, SPECIFIC measurements, all nighters, time away from family, and just a large work load occur. Make you sure get a step ahead like I did, and did animal care volunteering at 15

    That the way I believe it works too. I know the in my particular field of marine biology I want study doesn't make much and will have travel constantly but I am so in love with my choice in career I just don't care about how how much I make. I just want the nice fresh experience , and at least I'll still making money, even though we should get paid much more.

  • @MikeGilOfficial
    @MikeGilOfficial  11 років тому

    Marine biology, like many fields, can pay a wide range of salaries. For example, tenured professors often make well over $100,000 USD per year, while field technicians can make much much less (on the order of 20-60k). But, if you live in academia, money is not that important. I honestly don't have a good sense of job availability. The way I believe it works is if you're in love with your job, you will be one of the best at it, and if you're one of the best at it, people will want to hire you :)

    I'm looking down the career path of Physicist or Marine biologist, I've been looking between the two, on one side, I love marine animals and traveling the world, on the other side, I love exploring the unknowns of the universe, but I'd be cooped up in an office.

      I'm a current marine biology student, but I'm going on to do a Mathematics with Physics degree at the Open University (it's an online uni, but you get the same degree) while I also do my Masters and PhD in marine bio, who says you can't do both?! You should aim to do as much as you want! :)

      Lil Rock It depends what career path you go down with it. The most competitive field is tropical marine biology, since its the one everyone wants to do (it involves all the fun stuff!). But there are loads of things you can do, fisheries ecology and management is one of the most important due to the fish crisis, but things like conservation and marine engineering are good to do as well. However, I don't think we earn more than Doctors unless you are really successful, but that involves doing a hell of a lot research for different organisations or a lucky break with a huge one. The most important thing to know is that a Marine Biology degree offers a huge amount of opportunities, and there are loads of things you can specialise in, and it is super fun and interesting!

People can tell i really want to do it becase im already planing what college's i would be able to go to,and what courses im gonna take and all that other stuff. I feel really pasenet with sea creatchers and all types of animals. If for some reason things dont work out with all that stuff then i would try to become a vetanarian. I love the ocean. =^_^=

About 2 years ago my teacher asked me what I wanted to do when I got older I said I don't know. He said well what do you like to do. I told him mostly just either fish or mess around in a creek and catch all kinds of stuff. Then he said well do you like the ocean. And i said well yes of course. He then said well then be a

      Kinda. It's not just diving in the ocean, taking a picture, and then writing about it. Your gonna need a decent understanding of math and physics. You should also enjoy, or at least be good at, reading and writing. And of course love the ocean.
