- The film ‘The Conductor’ is based on the true story of the Dutch born Antonia Brico. In the late 1920’s she was the world’s first woman who successfully conducted a large symphony orchestra. Until recent, women barely succeeded to reach the world’s top ranking conductors. This year, for the first time in Dutch history, the Netherlands Radio Philharmonic Orchestra appointed a woman as its Chief Conductor: Karina Canellakis.
THE STORY
United States 1926: The Dutch, 24-year-old Antonia Brico (played by Christanne de Bruijn) was a child when she and her parents (Annet Malherbe and Raymond Thiry) immigrated to the United States. She dreams of becoming a conductor, but nobody takes her ambition seriously. Her piano teacher advices her against taking the entrance exam for the conservatory. Because she has little to lose, she returns to her motherland, where she begs the famous conductor Mengelberg (Gijs Scholten van Aschat) to teach her conducting lessons. Mengelberg is not comfortable with the idea and sends her to Berlin where she, against all expectations, has a better chance as a woman to make it. After a two-year study at the State Academy of Music she becomes the first woman to conduct the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra. Emotional strain threatens to overwhelm her, when the love of her life puts her in a difficult position. What choice will Antonia make?

My dad was a pianist...he studied under Brico. She was a tough woman!
I had the privilege and pleasure to perform under Dr. Brico's baton a few times in the 70s. A very demanding and disciplined conductor!
Just finished the movie and that was really great! That ambition, classic athmosphere, characters, friendships, the way of overcoming the diffuculties and so on.. Everything was what i needed to see in one movie, lately. I felt like i lived the movie while watching. What an invigorationg one!!

Just watched this movie 4 hours ago. One of the best I’ve ever watched for a long long time ❤️ The actors are brilliant!! And I love the story telling - thanks to Maria Peters, the writer and the director of this beautiful film.
Where did you watch this movie??
I saw it on Netflix, great movie, loved it, enjoyed it very much until the very end. The only downside was the comment at the end about female conductors not making the list of best conductors, to my opinion there was no need for that.

Toxic relationship...
I loved this movie! I had conflicted feelings about Frank character and was more invested in brico's solo life story rather than her romantic one with Frank but can't deny how amazing all actors were. Actors playing Brico, Frank and Robin were exceptional.
Robin loved Brico but god never told her. We could see the love through his eyes. Sad. I liked how the movie ended. It showed character development for Frank n her relation.
Frank loved her but he's love became selfish in which he was asking something that brico wasn't ready to give. Both characters had amazing chemistry.
Would recommend the film.

@@deepshikharana1172 I'm commenting on the dramatic style of the trailer. This is an epic period peice, not an action flick. She is not saving the world from an alien attack. The actual film is a slow moving drama. It's like making a movie about someone going grocery shopping and hyping the trailer up is if it was the next Batman flick. None the less the movie looks fairly good to be honest, and I will probably watch it because it is a peice, but I'm not really interested in orchestras.

Naomi C. Kenny Brico was Dutch, so I guess the subtitels are Dutch. They state that even in 2017 there are no women in the top 50 of best conductors ever.

Its funny how the "men" are getting triggered by this trailer.
Its the reality of that time, women were treated like objects only there to take care of the house and make babies. Nowadays women are fighting but its still a long way to go!! I praise those men who have an open mind and treat women equal
@@sharonfenech2912 yeah but the men in the comments section getting triggered by this trailer are so easily offended that a woman would want to be something else than a housewife and baby making machine. And that the trailer shows how horrible some men at that time were.

Oh please. Men aren't getting triggered, they're just bored or annoyed by the recent torrent of female hero films in which men are the ONLY foil to happiness and fulfillment for the female lead. Personally, I'm just astonished that educated women want such corny panegyrics to female yearning.
I would hope as we mature we ALL want more complicated main characters and plots in our films, not this rewarmed Horatio Alger melodrama.
