If you love the Citroen Ami but need something a bit bigger and faster, Citroën has the answer - the Oli. The French brand is doubling down on its radical designs for electric cars with a concept which points the way to a new family sized electric car with radical features - including mesh seats and cardboard panels - to make it lighter, more efficient and more affordable.
And we’ve been just been granted an exclusive FIRST DRIVE around the streets of Paris.
Described by Citroen as a ‘laboratory on wheels’ which aims to buck industry trends for heavier, more complex and expensive electric cars, the Oli provides just what Citroën thinks customers need and want. Supported by the inventive use of responsible materials and a sustainable production process, its target vehicle weight of around 1,000kg makes it significantly lighter than most comparable compact SUVs, even those with petrol power.
But what is the Oli like to drive? Join Ginny in Paris as she takes to the wheel in what is one of Citroen’s wildest concept cars ever. Is this the future of electric cars? Would you consider a car like the Oli? As always, let us know your thoughts in the comments below.

I agree!
Great in every way except for the top speed. Need to be at least 100 mph / 160 km/h.

Want. This is flexible, affordable, and fun. Citroën are becoming bold again - this should definitely be in their lineup!
It is hideous, maybe get someone who knows about styling to fix this abomination.
I've seen more attractive dog poops.
@@jamesleate Fair enough - Horses for courses, even if your opinion is that the finishing post is in the knackers yard!
But isn't that just part of the appeal (or not) - some folk will not touch it, others will see it fit their needs. I mean, some folk think Tesla style is great (I like the minimalism and interior look) but for me the outside styling peaked with the Model S and went downhill from there.
I also quite like the Aptera... plus the 3rd/4th-gen LR Discovery (when it looked ready to do business anywhere, before it was restyled a bit, erm, droopy and soft 💩 ).
@@examinerian I can't see how anybody with eyes can like this. I understand that taste varies massively but there is nothing on this vehicle that is in any way cohesive.
I don't think this is styled as such as it seems to have been shat out.
@@jamesleate This styling is like the Cybertruck's, you either like it or hate it. And that's great imo, I am fed up from all the clones I see on the road.
@@MohamedTarikRochdi I laughed so hard when they revealed the Cybertruck. I genuinely thought it was a bad joke and the real one was hiding somewhere.
I honestly hadn't laughed that hard in a long time.
The thing is there is good styling and bad styling, it isn't subjective. A well styled car can be subjectively viewed as ugly or attractive.
Styling is about cohesive ideas and a strong set of cues that portray those ideas.
I hate all the bland clones too, but I would prefer to see an alternative that is better rather than an obvious mess of mixed boxes and random shapes with no vision other than to be as "different" as possible.
The determination to be different can be a positive thing, but it can also lead to an incoherent mess such as this.
At least the Cybertruck (however comical it looks) has a cohesive design language and looks like it was designed by an individual or a team working together.
This looks like every element was shipped out to a different design house who were banned from ever speaking to each other. I'm certain that certain elements have been based on the crayon drawings of a toddler.
It is simply poor design in my view.
£20,000?! That is insane! And it looks stunning! I hope Citroen do the right thing and make this for global market. We need affordable, cheap to run ev that can be easily upgraded so we won't have to buy more ev
They need to bring to the us I want one of these
Every electric car is £20k until they make it and release it. Then it goes up 60-70%

I love the design and all the philosophy behind it. Most car makers are upgrading their traditionally most affordable models to upper segments to make them more profitable without giving any alternative, and here we have Citroën adressing the issue in a creative way. I get that making affordable cars with all the standard features we are used to is getting less and less profitable for car makers, but i think Citroën is hitting the nail on this one: instead of selling you an "outdated" cheap base car, they are offering a new one that seek to adress today's needs.
the design?an ev with such a boxy shape is stupid.
Most automakers are converting their most popular and most profitable models to EV (at least in the US). That's why they are making electric SUVs and full-size pickup trucks way more than cars (the US LOVES that crap). Nobody is making new EV's on "outdated" base model ICE platforms, just not happening. And how is this not a cheap base car? The car is partially made of cardboard and it looks like Master Chief time traveled his truck to the 80's to have the interior redone.
@@powertothesheeple5422 By "not a cheap base car" I mean it was designed from scratch to be unexpesive, instead of taking some existing model (sometimes old) removing features, which is typically what car makers do to lower costs in developing countries or what, for example Renault is doing with Dacia.
I agree, my only issue is the visibility from the car. The A pillars are absolutely monstrous and the view infront of the car will be probably one of the worst in SUVs on the road, which can be really dangerous if you live in a kids area.
You might want to check for covid because one of the symptoms is lack of taste
Can’t believe how much effort Citroen has put in this one off. Hope to see something like it in production soon. Would make the top of my list.
For £20,000 this is fantastic. We need more cars like this asap. The only thing I'd change, is just up that top speed slightly to 80mph. Just so its a bit more useable when you find yourself on motorways.
with the ISA introduced by the ETSC by the time this comes out you wont be able to do 80mph in any new car anyways
@@stuwoac The transition will be quite unsafe... just imagine a freeway were an average (diesel) semi drives faster than an average citroen.
Utterly, utterly nuts, but fantastic to see Citroen being brave and doing things differently. I'd definitely be tempted to buy one if/when it makes it into production.
Brave? It's a concept. It will NEVER be built and they dont publish any data on actual feasibility, efficiency, safety.
Its amazing, love the design
This looks to be the most innovative product from the automotive industry in years. I would seriously consider buying one.
The Riversimple guys have been pretty innovative too along similar lines of longevity, and efficiency. (Sadly they have been a bit too radical to be successful, at least so far).
Haha. Funny joke

I love what they are going for here. I hope this catches on.
WOW ! I absolutely LOVE this from tip to tail. Even a more (inevitably) watered down production version I think would be outstanding. I love that it has its totally own personality and doesn't look like every other soul-less jellybean on the road. If this, or a closely related version became available I wouldn't be able to get my checkbook out of my pocket fast enough. Keep being you Citroen !
I wish it wasn't watered down or it will become looking like all the other cars and expensive!
I love it. The looks, the efficiency, the simplicity. And it's still packed with features! This is the kind of future I'm looking forward to.
I just hope it's available in less striking colors and not locked to neon yellow like the ami.
Efficiency?? Square vertical windshield+ tall and wide and 30 degree sloped rear end, throwing aerodynamics out the window! The concept is right but designers ruined it. 250km on a 40kWh battery is better than the average e-SUV but worse than small EVs.
The limit to 68 makes the car a no deal. American highways go up to 70, sometimes 80. But I love the car.
The Smart car had a similar concept about “upgrading and personalising” body panels that never really succeeded. I do like them ditching the touchscreen system, always so dangerous in a car. Bodypanels - well that’s an IKEA type construction, light and strong. But it’s good to see Citroen pushing boundaries again as with the Light 15, 2CV, and DS.
If this comes to market in a slightly conservative fashion, its guaranteed to be an instant hit. Cheap, lightweight EV is the way to go. I especially liked that Citroen has limited the speed to 68mph for maximum efficiency, that's quite an ideal speed to drive, 110KMph isn't all that bad.
It should still be possible to disable the speed limit (making it clear that efficiency will go way down). If you can't disable it it's BS, that's not even the speed limit in my country.
Its still lower the motorway cruising speed of about 120 and limit of 130 in France

Ahead or more like out of their mind with such shouty red whorehouse looking interior, and chairs that remind Ikea childish chairs for kindergartens. Panels out of cardboard and it's even uglier than juke, multipla and pt cruiser, I didn't know that such abomination can exist
Let’s hope they actually put this into production for real 🤞🤞
Abso-fricken-ly awesome! Its so nice to see a fresh and completely out-of-the box approach. Love the minimalistic and functional approach and an amazing design! Hopefully we see some if it in a production version! Thx for sharing :-)
The minimalistic approach is an excellent thing to see again, after it disappearing at the end of the 2000s/start of the 2010s. But the exterior design is unforgivable and practically kills anything the car has going for it.
This is one of the most insane electric cars I’ve ever seen, it has to be put into production, it’s incredible bold and unique, just like old Citroen’s from the 50’s and 60’s
Excellent piece. The effort Citroen have put into the OLI is what every manufacturer of products of any kind should be doing - right now. The ideas of disposable products and planned obsolescence were always stupid and nothing more than a convenient way for corporations to make more money all the while screwing us and the environment. I keep my cars a long time (16 years for my '85 GTI) and the OLI being "designed to last decades rather than being disposable" is music to my ears. All of us to some degree have bought in to the marketing hype of buying a new car every few years and wanting the newest, greatest thing at all times. What needs to happen now is for people to realize that is BS and that they have been manipulated all along the way. Cars and almost any product should follow the ideas in the OLI. It's not that hard to do and there are plenty of people in the markletplace who want their stuff to be designed and built like this. Example: I don't care if my phone is a few millimeters thicker in order to have a replaceable battery. Same for cars, computers, tablets etc.
Agreed. For my company I've designed a modular EV (called Chi) that whilst looking nothing like the Oli, employs some of the ideas. Hope Citroën follow through aggressively.
@@GudieveNing what's your company?
Let's not forget right to repair laws is now in force in usa and Canada and eu too maybe ? I'm tired of the platitudes from apple 🍎 samsung etc , they both ticked me off when they removed real headphone jack and expect me to buy a extra thing that looks ugly hanging from phone, easily misplaced. Samsung ticked me off when ir port was missing on s7 till now . They increase prices , and give us less saving themselves pennies on millions of units. Sick of it.
Vehicles do not need to look this way though. It shouldn’t be the modern face of automotive (exterior at least) design. Vehicles need to look like actual vehicles, electric or not. Not video game assets.
Citroen has been killing it with their design since the late 2000's. No other car company comes close in terms of daring design.
Modular pieces screams planned obsolescence to me. “The bumper fell off? Here, buy a new one”
I agree , it’s a groundbreaking vehicle and definitely desirable .
nah, toy for environmental freaks
Love it ! Citroën doing what they do best, off the wall thinking and design, cud see so many companies creating add ons for this in the future.
I must say I really applaud Citroen. This is exactly the kind of concept the world could look to adapt to. I hope most vehicles adopt this type of ingenuity
Really interesting car and I love how it breaks the mold in terms of looks.
I wonder if the vertical front window is truly such a good idea. Yes it probably reduces the need for AC since there's less direct sunlight, but it also increases wind resistance. For city driving that might make sense, and due to the limited speed you probably don't want it if you regularly drive long distances anyway. I wonder if further city optimizations might have made more sense as well - it does seem quite large. And seems to have a good amount of cargospace.
I'm not a big fan of the lack of a screen as well. Especially for navigation it makes sense, but considering that this is supposed to be quite modular, I wouldn't be surprised if there was a screen module available.
Ask a Jeep Wrangler owner. Closest thing to a vertical windshield.
There are ways to get the air to just go above the flat windscreen at speed rather than hit it. Citroen have done that to a small degree with the gap in the lights redirecting air up to push air over the windscreen. It is a really good idea that can have clever work arounds to still have near equivalent aerodynamic efficiency.
As for lack of a screen I would imagine putting one in yourself wouldn't be that hard at all.
Sign me up, I'll buy one in a hearbeat. quirky design but the price and range are incredible.
I think the windscreen should be tilted slightly to improve a little bit of aerodynamics and the car would also look a bit better. Anyway well done Citoen.
They literally explained why it was flat in the video. If it was curved it would totally defeat what the entire concept is about… 🤦♂️
@@brendenc8376 chill...
I really like the flat windscreen, it makes it look like military vehicle along with the high "waist".
They put a flat windscreen to save cost but curved the 4 side windows...logic. Not to mention the increase in cost for those hinges as opposed to a straight forward up/down crane.
Also it lowers your field of view
This is exactly what I envisaged as the logical next step up from the Ami, an Ami+ if you like with proper range, reasonable top speed and lots of innovations. I really hope we will see the final production version in a year or so, probably with a few more curves. But please Citroen, you need to keep the price down to that £20k or at least significantly cheaper than the MG Z4. Overall though congrats to Citroen for breaking the mould (again)
The MG is cheap because it is subsidised heavily by the chinese government, which people need to be aware when making comparisons. If they had little competition do you think the cheap prices will remain? I think not.
👀👀👀👀👀👀👀 can't get enough of Oli
Citroën should really consider bring back the 2CV's old suspension - given the logic of using the least amount of materials to the best effect
Surprisingly, I’m loving it!! Because it’s not nonsensical.
It's the Hummer from LEGO and i love it. Can't wait for its on sale
Incredible work Citroen. Well done @Electrifying for embracing and calling out it's design led thinking and challenge to the industry.
Ginny another great exclusive video from you guys, this car is absolutely astounding, if they could make it for that price they would not be able to make enough. Please please bring it to production as is.
Well done Citroën... 👍👍👍
Designers doing something stunning & practical.
OMG gods of car manufacturing PLEASE let it happen
In a way this is typically Citroën. So quirky yet really forward thinking as well.
If you look at the Cactus concept car vs the production model, its virtually identical, which bodes well for the Oli. I love the quirkiness of the Cactus, (which in fact weights less than the Oli at about 990kg )and the Oli takes that to a whole new dimension with its design, practicality and affordability, the fact that everything can be replaced and modified, even 3D printed is pushing cars into the realms of science fiction.
My son is seriously into Lego, builds his own designs, I can see him embracing 3D printing and modding his own parts for his car in the future using recycled plastic.
My only issue is the windscreen, I can see it being slightly modified to be sloped, other than that, I love it!
I'm always interested in new ev's but never mind with some futuristic concepts..it's been a few days since it appeared but I just realized it could be real🤦 what a daring car and what a lovely interpretation 😍in the future all the cars will have some piece of this 💥5*🎉 keep up with good work 🥂
Even though the production version probably wont be as amazing, this is very exciting stuff. Citroen finally are bringing back their reputation for being the coolest car brand in the business!
The problem is always what will be actually in production! This concept model actually works for me!
I think that people will change their minds about that flat windshield when the first rock goes right through it and brakes their face
I really do like the idea of not having an infotainment screen.
Absolutely brilliant! Well done Citroen! This will be so appealing to young and old alike.
I think this looks fantastic, its a bit like a baby Hummer. You know what, that is a very fair point about the internal tech, although I do like having a bigger screen for the sat nav. The materials sound very interesting, I love the wheels. However, thinking about the materials on the outside if its light, is it still safe? I would be very interested to see what it scores on the Euro NCAP. I do really like the utilitarian look of the car. This is very exciting, Citroen are thinking about the long haul.
from the video, the carboard panels are used on the roof and bonnet - so not where the car will be taking impacts.
Also remember, a lightweight car has a lot less energy to absorb in a crash.
At the very least it's safer for everyone else (except the flat screen which looks uncomfortable for the crashing cyclist)
I want one! Looks, easy maintenance, sustainable and fantastic for modders! Citroen you have to put the Oli into production!!!!
Great video!
Thanks. Good to see a car-maker having fun and putting a prototype on the road. I imagine it won't be efficient for motorway journeys at that constant 68mph, due to high drag from the vertical elements?
I’ve never been a fan of Citroen, but this car is amazing! Not only does it look great, but the whole concept is brilliant. Well done Citroen 👏
10/10 for Citroen.
Interesting design, good use of materials, and clever. It is everything the other mainstream manufacturers have failed in the move over to EV.
Like others have said , "Citroen, please make it.......ASAP!" You will sell them by the bucket load.
I love it. Been a fan of Citreon since the Cactus. I'd definitely look into one of these if they came into production, love the boldness of it, a real head turner 😍.
Citroen has killed it. Great unique job.
Just love it but wait till the sales and accounting department "re-design" the car, it will magically look like every other car on the road :/
Unfortunately I fear you are right
How in the world can I get one in America, this is too great of an idea, a car for the people that don't need all the bells and whistles, just a smart purchase
Class looking motor! Not surprising as Citroen made some iconic cars in it's day, especially the DS,the most beautiful car ever made.
Jay Leno will surely get one for his museum ! Just for the sake of the design and concept!
This is a new car I would actually buy. Forget the gadgets and gizmos, just simple, economical and good for the planet. And batshoot crazy looks to boot!
Go on Citroën, you know you want to....
Wow, that is amazing! I love all of the concepts here. Just bring one out in more relaxing colors, and I'd be happy to buy one. Perhaps a more tilted windscreen for highway driving (living in Finland, range is more important that shade), and a 60kwh battery, but then I'd be really happy in that car!
With a lowish top speed the benefit of a more "Tilted" windscreen are questionable.
Hot in summer. Ice in winter. Heavier. More expensive. Requires thicker pillars. Worse visability especially in rain. More expensive wipers requiring heavier wiper motor.
@@clarksonbarry I get what you are saying. There is an idea behind this, but there could well be a similar version with a tilted windscreen for people that do more highway driving in colder climates. There's room on the market for both.
It looks cool but Citroen completely misses the mark in my opinion. It could have been an affordable successor to the VW XL1, but they ruined its potential by turning it into a city car. At first I was really excited about how light it was for an electric car, but when I heard its speed is limited because of the massive vertical windshield, they lost me. There's no point in making a car light if you then give it a needlessly high drag coefficient. And for what? To make the windshield easier/cheaper to make? Why are the side windows still curved then?
Citroen going back to their roots with crazy cars. It’s about time 👍🏼
Nice review. Thank you for showing niche cars that I would otherwise never found on my own
What a fantastic car. Brilliant design, well done Citroen.
I could definitely see Stellantis introduce the Oli here in America as a Ram or Dodge small crossover, as it's easily adaptable to U.S. safety equipment. Its appeal to me is like an electric Honda Element or Nissan Xterra.
Stupid US comparisons...
I would buy this as my first ever new car
My grandma was a Taxi driver for five decades. He knew cars, had his Benz he bought from the company but it was way to expensive to keep, what with near 850k km and such.
So in '92, he bought a Citroen AX, brand new. Drove it for 9 years, gave it to me dad. He drove it for 6 years, sold it to a friend, who then sold it to someone else, who ended up selling it back to me dad. For fifteen year's me dad drove that thing, fixed it, repaired it, looked after it. Another five went by and we gave it a paint job, looked absolutely gorgeous.
Dad's retiring this year and since i got me license, he gave it to me. I drove a little 125 keeway chopper but he insisted:
"Motorcycles arent great for rain, so keep the car. Peek at the water and the oil every week, and let me know if it blows up, i got great insurance."
675,238 kilometers. Same engine, clutch, wheel's, panel's, seat's and just about everything but the tires and paint are original from the assembly line.
I'll likely die before that car does, but it does speak volumes over the quality and craftsmanship of Citroen WHEN they put actual time and effort into designing a reliable and durable car.
Now, having shown this to me dad (who utterly despises ay car past '98) he's genuinely considering getting one.
Greeting's from Bristol!
Nice work citron, keep pushing the boundaries. Hope see it in production
Man, I have so much respect for Citroen. I love that quintessential French brand. I love how they just don't give a S about anything and keep doing their thing. They just don't care about what others might think of them. They follow their own path. They are super, ultra, hyper quirky. The quirkiest car maker. And it works !!! Look at the last C5X ! It's a masterpiece of a car. I am genuinely in love with the Oli. Insane weird stuff, but so cool. I would buy it.
Finally a car manufacture breaking the mould and designing a car that looks different to all the rest and very stylish in my opinion. Nice job Citreon, hopefully other designers will be aloud to follow suit. Thanks for sharing, great video. 😎
My grandma lives in the Beauce region (S-W of Paris) and she bought the Citroen AMi last year. I drove it when I visited France last summer and it was absolutely fun. I loved it even though the speed limit and power are rather limited, but the area is very flat so it's not much trouble. However, she will move to the Cantal in a couple of years and this concept car would be a great upgrade to the AMi for that hilly region. Let's hope the OLi will be in production by then. 🤞
If you build an FJ cruiser out of legos, it will look like the OLI.
Citroen should ABSOLUTELY put this into production. I’m still rather adverse to going electric but I really would for this! Clever, funky, unique and stunning!

What an incredibly professional review!!! Thankyou at last an electric car review that moves from the many amateur over enthusiastic channels to main stream. Of course well done Citroen for a top down design. As a car enthusiast the one thing I really love is the no screens. To many cars are trying to become ipads on wheels.
Great ideas and would love to see it on sale, but pretty irrelevant unless a production version arrives. I really don't believe the price claims either. Making a wacky prototype is easy. Making it to production is quite a different matter.
Wow, I'd love to have one
Love this car so many good ideas. I always wonder why all cars are not limited to 70mph, for safety and fuel use.
Because most people, especially owners of BMW would lose their minds that they can't drive 160kmh on a country road, or 240 on a highway. MUH FREEDOM thing, you know. ;/
That would never fly in the usa, where many highways have a 70+ mph speed limit.
This is honestly so sad. For me, I mean. I absolutely LOVE this car!! I drive a full-sized truck here in the U.S. and I would trade it RIGHT NOW for that Citroen OLI. I think they'd need to increase the speed limiter to more like 80 mph to deal with U.S. highway speeds, but other than that the car is perfect. The design, the space, the versatility, the practicality...it's all there. This is the direction I've always wanted EVs to go. Now here it is...and I can't get my hands on it. 😭
Looks like a lego humvee
And yet better than the current monstrosity, electric or not.
It's a yes from me.
Reminds me of the FJ Cruiser, I love it. An off road version would be really cool.
fibreglass reinforce cardboard is a really interesting idea, keen to see where that goes in the future
Nothing new, people have been doing it for the past few years. Soaking material in resin makes them hundreds of thousands times Harder. I’ve seen tables made of resin and it takes a 5 ton tree stump dropped high above to break it.
I applaud the innovation mentality behind this car. Seems like a good strategic business thinking as the first major manufacturer who commits to this shift towards upgradable design instead of new models every year will have a head-start on the market.
I like how desperate it is. It sounds like that's not a quality but it really is. The designers seem to really want to smash the "every car looks the same" thing.
I think a parachute has less of a drag then this front wind shield.
It looks like a tiny pickup truck going in reverse. I love it.

Not fan of french cars usually, but Citroën nailed the design and utility of this OLI. 250 miles range is nothing to scoff at for a urban-suburban car. When this comes out, it will be a hit, guaranteed!
Brilliant, bold and refreshing. Not sure how safe that windscreen woudl be for any pedestrians hit by the car though
Just wanted to acknowledge that drone shot at 1:28, very cool!
Was good until I saw it had a gov to 68mph. If that was it's mechanical limit I'd understand - but the ideal of electronically capping it seems insidious. If it's my product I should be allowed to use it to its limit.
Great study of a car. Lots of stuff that I’ve been waiting to see for years. Like for example the absence of screens and disappointing infotainment system. Also the seats. Mesh seats just make sense to me. Wonder how they would be to clean. Perhaps just take them out and hose them down?Shame about the speed limit though. I think most people need an all rounder car and that just makes it miss that mark imo.
I’m curious to see how the upgradability will translate to production cars. Super exciting
